Chapter 1 - The Slap at the Villa

Three hours earlier, Emma Carter had been imagining coffee.

Not revenge.

Not lawyers.

Not police.

Coffee.

She had spent the previous night inside a fluorescent intensive care unit in Chicago helping transfer a twenty-three-year-old crash victim from extracorporeal support to emergency surgery. By the time her plane landed, she had slept perhaps forty minutes.

Her mother did not know she was coming.

That was intentional.

Margaret Carter had spent years pretending she needed nothing.

If Emma called ahead, Margaret would clean the guest room, bake something unnecessarily elaborate, and insist on standing at the stove until her knees ached.

So Emma planned a surprise.

She hired a car from the airport, changed into a light blue suit in the terminal restroom, bought Margaret a small box of lemon pastries from her favorite bakery, and sent Brandon one message.

Don't tell Mom. I'm coming home.

He had replied with a thumbs-up.

That should have been Emma's first warning.

Brandon almost always wrote more.

When the car turned through the iron gates of the Carter villa, Emma smiled despite her exhaustion.

The house stood on a ridge overlooking Lake Briar, all limestone walls, tall windows, and climbing ivy.

It had never been intended as a mansion.

Twelve years earlier, when Emma's ICU career began taking off, she had purchased the neglected property for a fraction of its later value.

Margaret helped restore it room by room.

Her mother chose the kitchen tiles.

Her mother planted the hydrangeas.

Her mother spent weeks stripping paint from the old staircase herself because she refused to let Emma spend money on craftsmen for something she could do with her own hands.

The villa was supposed to become a family anchor.

Then Brandon's construction company collapsed.

He and Vanessa lost their apartment.

Emma let them move in temporarily.

Temporary became five years.

At first, Emma had not minded.

She lived mostly near the hospital anyway.

Brandon handled bills and maintenance.

Margaret liked having someone nearby.

Or so Emma believed.

The car stopped near the entrance.

Emma stepped out.

Laughter came from somewhere behind the house.

A party.

She frowned.

Brandon had not mentioned a party.

As she reached for her suitcase, she heard a woman's voice.

"Did you wash any of this properly?"

Vanessa.

Emma stopped.

There was another sound.

A brush scraping stone.

Emma rounded the corner.

Margaret was kneeling beside the patio fountain.

Her gray hair hung loosely over her face.

Her clothes were soaked at the knees.

One sleeve had torn near the shoulder.

Dark bruises marked both forearms.

Emma's hand tightened around the pastry box.

Vanessa stood over Margaret in a black camisole and beige trousers, holding a glass of wine.

"What are you doing?" Margaret asked softly.

"Fixing your mess."

"The stones are clean."

"They're disgusting."

Margaret reached for the brush again.

Vanessa kicked the bucket.

Dirty water spilled across the patio.

Emma froze.

Margaret slowly looked at the water.

Vanessa pointed.

"Look what you did."

Margaret whispered, "You kicked it."

"What did you say?"

"Nothing."

Vanessa stepped closer.

"That's what I thought."

Emma's pulse began pounding.

Then Brandon appeared in the villa doorway.

For one second, relief swept through her.

Surely now he would stop it.

Instead, he folded his arms.

Margaret looked toward him.

"Brandon?"

He stared at the ground.

That was when Vanessa slapped her.

The sound traveled across the patio.

Margaret fell sideways.

The scrubbing brush rolled across the stones.

Emma's suitcase dropped from her hand.

Vanessa spun around.

Brandon looked up.

Margaret lifted her face.

Their eyes met.

"Emma?"

The word broke her.

Emma crossed the patio so quickly that Vanessa stepped backward.

She dropped to her knees beside Margaret.

"Mom."

Margaret's cheek was red.

Her lip trembled.

Emma touched her face with the gentleness she usually reserved for frightened patients.

"What happened?"

"I'm fine."

"No, you're not."

"Emma..."

Vanessa recovered her composure.

"Oh, please. Don't turn this into a medical emergency."

Emma slowly looked up.

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

"She was being dramatic."

Emma stood.

Vanessa had seen Emma tired.

She had seen her irritated.

She had never seen the expression on Emma's face now.

"What did you just say?"

Vanessa lifted her chin.

"This is our house, Emma. We had guests coming. Margaret offered to help clean."

Margaret said nothing.

Emma glanced at Brandon.

"Our house?" she repeated.

Vanessa laughed.

"You've been gone so long maybe you forgot."

Emma looked around the villa.

Then back at Vanessa.

May you like

Something cold settled inside her.

"No," she said. "I remember exactly whose house this is."
