Chapter 7: The Apology That Came Too Late

After Celeste and Damon were taken away for questioning, Blackwood Manor became silent.
For the first time in years, the house did not feel powerful.
It felt tired.
Edmund sat near the fireplace, his hands trembling around a cup of tea. Olivia stood across from him, holding her mother’s necklace.
Neither of them spoke for a long time.
Finally, Edmund broke the silence.
“I failed you,” he said.
Olivia looked at him.
For eight years, she had imagined this moment. Sometimes, she thought she would shout. Sometimes, she thought she would walk away. Sometimes, she thought forgiveness would feel impossible.
But the man before her was not the powerful father from her childhood.
He was broken, ashamed, and full of regret.
“I needed you,” Olivia said softly. “And you believed everyone except me.”
Tears filled Edmund’s eyes.
“I know.”
“I can’t forget that overnight.”
“I don’t expect you to.”
Olivia placed the necklace on the table between them.
“But I will listen,” she said. “If you are finally ready to tell the truth.”
Edmund nodded.
“I am.”
Over the next weeks, the truth became public.
The fake will was invalidated. Suspicious transfers were frozen. Edmund’s medical care was reviewed. Former employees testified. Celeste’s private doctor was investigated.
Olivia was given temporary authority over the Blackwood estate and company.
But she did not celebrate.
She did not throw parties.
She did not humiliate the people who had once laughed at her.
Her first act as the legal heir was simple.
She reopened her mother’s room.
Dust covered the piano, the books, and the dressing table. Olivia placed the pearl necklace exactly where it had once belonged.
Then she whispered:
“I came back, Mom.”
May you like
And for the first time, the mansion felt less like a battlefield.
It felt like a place where healing might begin.
