Chapter 3: The First Thread of the Truth

Olivia did not believe the message immediately.
She had learned that hope could be cruel. But she also knew one thing: the father in that photo did not look like a man simply resting from illness.
He looked trapped.
So Olivia began to investigate.
Her old university friend, Theo Grant, was now a forensic accountant. With his help, she discovered strange transfers from Edmund’s private accounts to several small companies created only months earlier.
The owners of those companies were not strangers.
They were connected to Celeste’s relatives.
Then Olivia found something even more alarming. Edmund’s longtime doctor had been dismissed without a clear reason. A new doctor, personally chosen by Celeste, had taken over his care. Soon after, Edmund stopped attending board meetings, stopped signing public statements, and stopped appearing outside the mansion.
The world was told he was too ill to speak.
But no one had seen proof.
Olivia searched for the old staff. Most of them had been fired. One by one, she found them: the driver, the cook, the gardener, and finally Nora, the housekeeper who had served the Blackwood family for more than twenty years.
When Nora opened her door and saw Olivia, she burst into tears.
“Miss Olivia,” she whispered. “I prayed you would come back.”
Nora told her everything.
Celeste had controlled the house after Olivia left. She dismissed anyone loyal to Edmund. She cut off his calls. She hid his letters. She made sure every message Olivia sent never reached him.
Then Nora said something that made Olivia’s heart stop.
“Your father tried to find you,” Nora said. “Celeste told him you had changed your name and wanted nothing to do with him.”
Olivia sat in silence.
For eight years, she had believed her father abandoned her.
Now she realized he had been trapped inside the same lie.

That night, Olivia stopped crying for the past.
She started preparing for war.
