Chapter 8 - The Name Behind the Mask

Daniel watched the waiter approach.
He recognized him as one of the temporary staff hired for the wedding, but something about his movements felt wrong. His shoulders were too rigid. His gaze never left Adrian.
Daniel stepped away from the altar.
Vivian noticed.
She whispered something to the man seated beside her.
The man rose and blocked Daniel’s path.
“Ceremony is in progress,” he murmured.
Daniel grabbed his wrist.
“Move.”
The man smiled and drove an elbow toward Daniel’s ribs.
Daniel twisted aside.
Guests gasped as the two men collided with a row of chairs.
The officiant stopped speaking.
Vivian stood.
“Security!”
Several men in black suits entered from the side doors.
Not hotel employees.
Private operatives.
Adrian seized the ceremonial tray from the waiter.
The waiter reached inside his jacket.
Celeste stepped between them.
“Father, stop!”
The single word changed the room.
Everyone turned.
Martin Cross emerged from behind the white-flower arch.
He no longer wore a security badge.
He held a gun at his side.
Vivian stared at Celeste with fury.
“You foolish girl.”
Celeste’s voice shook.
“His name is not Martin Cross. He is Julian Beaumont.”
Whispers rose.
A woman in the second row fainted.
Julian looked at his daughter.
“I built every part of this for you.”
“You built it for yourself.”
“For our family.”
“You let me mourn you for nine years.”
“It was necessary.”
Adrian placed himself in front of Lily.
“You drugged me this morning.”
Julian’s smile disappeared.
“You were meant to sleep longer.”
“And the glass?”
“A safeguard.”
Vivian moved toward the tray.
“Enough. The child invented this chaos.”
Lily lifted the flower basket.
“She didn’t invent the video,” Adrian said.
Vivian stopped.
Adrian reached beneath the petals.
The phone was gone.
Lily stared into the empty basket.
“It was there.”
Vivian smiled.
A young ring bearer stood near the altar clutching something behind his back.
The phone.
Vivian had taken advantage of the struggle to signal the boy.
He was her nephew.
“Bring it to me,” she ordered.
The boy hesitated.
Lily stepped toward him.
“Don’t.”
Vivian’s expression sharpened.
“Oliver, now.”
The boy looked at the adults surrounding him.
Then he ran.
Not toward Vivian.
Toward the ballroom doors.
One of Julian’s men chased him.
Daniel broke free and tackled the man.
The phone flew from Oliver’s hand, sliding across the wooden floor.
It stopped beside the ceremonial tray.
Vivian lunged.
Lily reached it first.
Julian raised his pistol.
“Put it down.”
Adrian moved in front of her.
“If you fire, every guest here becomes a witness to murder.”
Julian looked around.
Hundreds of phones were now recording.
His face changed.
He lowered the gun slightly.
Vivian spoke through clenched teeth.
“Play whatever fabrication you have.”
Lily unlocked the screen.
The first video began.
Vivian’s jeweled hand appeared above the glass.
The guests watched in silence.
Then Julian’s recorded voice filled the ballroom.
Once he collapses, Celeste signs the emergency documents. By morning, Vale Holdings belongs to us.
Julian’s men looked toward the exits.
Police sirens sounded outside.
Vivian turned to Celeste.
“You’ve destroyed your own family.”
Celeste shook her head.
“No. I stopped pretending this was one.”
Lily started the second video.
Elena appeared on screen.
“There is another person involved,” Elena said. “Someone within Vale Holdings authorized the forged medical records and provided access to Adrian’s signature.”
Adrian looked toward Daniel.
Daniel looked stunned.
The video continued.
“The insider’s identity is stored in a separate encrypted file. The password is the name of the person Richard Vale betrayed the night Julian Beaumont disappeared.”
Julian’s face became rigid.
Adrian turned toward him.
“My father knew you survived.”
Julian said nothing.
The ballroom doors opened.
Federal agents entered with weapons drawn.
“Put the gun down!”
May you like
Julian slowly raised his hands.
Then every chandelier went dark.
