Chapter 13 - The Flower Girl’s Real Name

They returned to the hotel shortly before one in the morning.

Lily ran into Hannah’s arms.

Hannah held her tightly, unable to speak.

Adrian asked Torres to clear a private room.

No one mentioned the second name on the Meridian document until the door was locked.

Lily sat at the table swinging her feet.

“Why is everyone looking at me?”

Hannah placed both hands around hers.

“The computer showed your name.”

“What computer?”

“A trust created by Adrian’s father and two other men.”

“I don’t have a trust.”

Torres opened Lily’s birth certificate.

Lily Rose Hart.

Father: not listed.

Mother: Hannah Elise Hart.

“Who was her father?” Torres asked gently.

Hannah’s face closed.

“That has nothing to do with this.”

“It may have everything to do with this.”

Hannah stood.

“No.”

Adrian spoke quietly.

“Samuel Mercer named Lily as successor controller to a fortune worth billions.”

“He didn’t name her,” Hannah said. “The trust did.”

“You know why.”

Hannah turned toward him.

For years, she had protected one truth because she believed silence kept Lily safe.

That belief had ended when Julian seized her in the kitchen.

“Lily’s father was Michael Vale.”

Adrian stared.

“My brother?”

Lily looked at him.

“You have a brother?”

“Had,” Adrian whispered.

Michael was five years younger than Adrian. Reckless, charming, forever escaping the expectations attached to the Vale name.

He had died in a car accident eight years earlier.

Lily was seven.

Adrian sat down.

“Michael never told me.”

“He didn’t know,” Hannah said.

“You never told him?”

“I tried.”

She looked toward Lily.

“We met while I was working at a restaurant near his university. We were together for six months. Then he disappeared.”

“He died.”

“I learned that later. Before I could tell him I was pregnant.”

Adrian remembered the final months of Michael’s life. His brother had been frightened, convinced someone was following him. Richard dismissed it as paranoia.

“What does Michael have to do with Meridian?”

Torres searched Elena’s files.

A family-tree diagram appeared.

The Meridian Trust could pass only through direct descendants of the three founders.

Celeste represented Julian Beaumont.

Daniel represented Samuel Mercer.

Adrian and Michael represented Richard Vale.

But the trust’s succession clause contained an unusual safeguard.

If the primary controller was compromised, control passed to the youngest living descendant produced by the Vale line.

Lily.

Hannah shook her head.

“She is a child. She wants books and pancakes. She does not want a company.”

“She may not have a choice,” Daniel said.

Hannah glared at him.

“Children always have a choice.”

Lily looked at Adrian.

“Was my dad nice?”

Adrian could not answer immediately.

Michael had been infuriating. Impulsive. Loyal. He once drove six hours through a storm because Adrian had mentioned being alone on his birthday.

“Yes,” Adrian said. “He was very nice.”

“Did he know about me?”

“No.”

Lily absorbed this.

Then she asked, “Would he have wanted me?”

Hannah covered her mouth.

Adrian knelt beside Lily.

“He would have crossed the world to find you.”

Lily nodded once.

A knock sounded.

An agent entered holding a sealed envelope recovered from the blue room.

It was addressed to Lily.

Inside was a photograph of Hannah, Michael, and a newborn baby.

Hannah stared at it.

“That was taken at the hospital.”

“You said Michael didn’t know,” Adrian said.

“He didn’t.”

“Then who took the photograph?”

May you like

On the back, someone had written:

MICHAEL KNEW ENOUGH TO DIE FOR HER.
