Chapter 12 - The Bride in the Black Car

The signal traveled north through the city.

Torres dispatched vehicles while Adrian, Daniel, and Hannah followed in an unmarked car. Lily remained at the hotel with an agent, though she protested until Hannah promised to call every five minutes.

The beacon stopped at an abandoned railway station.

Rain began falling as they arrived.

The building stood dark except for a light in the upper office.

Adrian entered first.

Daniel followed.

Torres and her agents moved around the perimeter.

Inside, the old station smelled of rust and wet concrete.

A white wedding shoe lay near the stairs.

Celeste’s.

Adrian picked it up.

A drop of blood marked the heel.

They climbed.

The office door was open.

Celeste sat in a chair with her hands bound. Her veil was gone. A bruise darkened her cheek.

Adrian rushed toward her.

“Wait,” Daniel said.

A wire ran from beneath the chair to a device on the wall.

Celeste looked at Adrian.

“Don’t move.”

Adrian stopped.

Samuel Mercer’s voice came through a speaker.

“Place Elena’s phone on the table.”

Daniel held up the evidence bag.

“Release her first.”

“You are negotiating from sentiment. That is your weakness.”

“You’re my father.”

“I am also the only person in this room who understands the value of sacrifice.”

Daniel’s face hardened.

“You don’t know anything about me.”

“I know you spent twenty years protecting Adrian Vale. I know you surrendered opportunities because you believed friendship mattered more than power.”

“It does.”

Samuel sighed.

“That is why you were never ready.”

Adrian studied the explosive device.

A small digital clock counted down from eight minutes.

“Celeste,” he said, “did you know Samuel was alive?”

She shook her head.

“I saw him this morning dressed as the officiant. My father recognized him. They argued.”

“What did you hear?”

“Samuel said the marriage would unlock something Richard stole.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“My mother was standing outside the door. She threatened Lily and Hannah if I interfered.”

Adrian’s expression tightened.

“You still signed.”

Celeste’s tears mixed with rainwater dripping from her hair.

“I thought it was the rehearsal register. I didn’t know it was legal.”

Daniel placed Elena’s phone on the table.

“Now release her.”

A panel slid open.

Inside was a key.

Daniel moved toward it.

Celeste shouted, “No!”

The floor collapsed beneath him.

Daniel caught the edge with both hands.

Below was a deep maintenance shaft.

Adrian grabbed his wrist.

Together, he and Torres pulled Daniel up.

Samuel laughed through the speaker.

“Trust remains expensive.”

Torres examined the device attached to Celeste’s chair.

“It isn’t a bomb,” she said.

Celeste stared.

“What?”

“It’s a transmitter.”

Adrian looked toward the table.

Elena’s phone was gone.

The surface had opened and pulled it into a compartment.

Samuel had what he wanted.

The countdown reached zero.

Every screen in the station lit up.

A legal document appeared.

MERIDIAN TRUST ACTIVATION COMPLETE.

PRIMARY CONTROLLER VERIFIED.

The name beneath it was not Samuel Mercer.

It was CELESTE BEAUMONT VALE.

Everyone stared.

Celeste shook her head.

“No.”

Samuel’s voice disappeared.

For the first time, he sounded genuinely shocked.

“That is impossible.”

A second line appeared.

SUCCESSOR CONTROLLER: LILY ROSE HART.

Hannah stepped toward the screen.

“My daughter?”

Adrian felt the room tilt.

“Why would Lily’s name be there?”

The screens went black.

From the lower floor came the sound of a door slamming.

Samuel was escaping.
