Chapter 11 - The Door Below the Ballroom

The Beaumont Grand had been constructed over an older hotel that burned in 1964.
According to the building plans, several underground rooms had been sealed during renovation. Hannah remembered hearing kitchen employees speak about tunnels once used to transport alcohol during prohibition.
The plans stored on Elena’s phone showed one unmarked corridor beneath the ballroom.
Adrian, Daniel, Torres, and two agents entered through a service hatch near the wine cellar.
Lily refused to remain behind.
“Hannah needs medical care,” Adrian told her.
“My mom said I could stay with her.”
“Then stay.”
“But Celeste left the number on the cake where Mom would find it. Maybe she left something for me too.”
Adrian wanted to argue.
Hannah touched his arm.
“She notices what adults ignore.”
Torres reluctantly agreed to let Lily accompany them as far as the cellar, under an agent’s protection.
The underground corridor smelled of dust and damp stone.
Old electrical cables ran along the walls.
Daniel used his flashlight to study faded symbols painted near the floor.
“They match the Meridian emblem,” he said.
A circle crossed by three lines.
Three founders.
Three fortunes.
Three lies.
At the end of the corridor stood a steel door with a digital keypad.
Four digits.
Lily whispered, “1998.”
Daniel entered the number.
The door unlocked.
Beyond it lay a hidden office.
Modern computer monitors stood beside decades-old filing cabinets. Photographs covered one wall.
Adrian saw himself at business meetings, charity events, restaurants, even inside his own home.
Celeste appeared in dozens of images.
So did Daniel.
So did Lily and Hannah.
“They were watching all of us,” Hannah said.
A large screen turned on.
Samuel Mercer appeared.
He was in his late sixties, with silver hair and Daniel’s eyes.
“Hello, son.”
Daniel stopped breathing.
Samuel smiled.
“I wondered how long Elena’s clues would take you.”
“Where is Celeste?”
“Safe, for now.”
Daniel stepped toward the screen.
“You let me believe you were dead.”
“It was required.”
“You abandoned me.”
“I prepared you.”
“For what?”
“To inherit what should have been mine.”
Samuel’s gaze shifted toward Adrian.
“Richard Vale cheated both Julian and me. He diverted Meridian assets into Vale Holdings, then attempted to eliminate us.”
Julian shouted from behind the agents.
They had brought him in restraints to identify the underground passages.
“You are lying.”
Samuel laughed.
“Julian, you always were the emotional one.”
“You arranged the boat explosion.”
“You survived.”
“My crew did not.”
“Collateral damage.”
Julian lunged, but the agents restrained him.
Adrian stared at Samuel.
“What do you want?”
“What was promised. Control of Meridian.”
“The trust activates at midnight.”
“Yes.”
“And you need Celeste and me married.”
“You already are, legally speaking.”
Torres stepped closer.
“Any signature obtained under sedation is invalid.”
“Only if proven before activation.”
Samuel looked at Daniel.
“The evidence proving Adrian was drugged is stored on Elena’s original device. Bring it to me, and Celeste walks free.”
“You already have Elena,” Daniel said.
“I have many things.”
“Where do we bring it?”
Samuel smiled.
“The chapel roof.”
The screen went dark.
A timer appeared.
00:31:44.
Hannah looked around the office.
“Why show us this place?”
Adrian understood.
“He wants us focused underground while he moves something above.”
Lily approached the photograph wall.
One image showed the wedding rehearsal.
Celeste stood near the altar, signing the register.
Behind her, reflected in a mirror, was Samuel Mercer.
He wore the clothes of the wedding officiant.
Lily pointed.
“He was already in the ballroom.”
Torres looked at the timer.
“The chapel roof may be another distraction.”
Adrian studied the photograph.
On Celeste’s wrist was a thin silver bracelet.
He had given it to her the night they became engaged.
The bracelet contained an emergency location beacon designed by Vale Security.
He opened the tracking application on his phone.
A signal appeared.
May you like
Not on the chapel roof.
It was moving away from the hotel.
