Chapter 14 - The Dead Man’s Confession

The photograph changed everything.
Hannah remembered the day Lily was born. She had been alone except for a nurse named Margaret, an older woman with kind eyes who stayed past the end of her shift.
Margaret had taken one photograph at Hannah’s request.
But Michael was not present.
In the picture recovered from the blue room, someone had added him beside the hospital bed.
Or perhaps the image had been taken at another time.
Torres sent it for analysis.
Within an hour, the result returned.
The photograph had not been digitally altered.
Hannah looked ill.
“That’s impossible.”
Adrian studied Michael’s face.
His brother held the newborn carefully. He appeared thinner than Adrian remembered, with a healing cut near his temple.
The date printed on the edge was three days before Michael’s reported death.
Hannah shook her head.
“I was unconscious for nearly a day after the delivery. The doctors said I had complications.”
“Someone brought Michael to the hospital while you were sedated,” Torres said.
“Why wouldn’t he leave a message?”
Daniel examined the background.
A clock on the wall showed 2:17 a.m.
A man stood reflected in the glass of a cabinet.
Richard Vale.
Adrian’s father.
“My father knew.”
A video file was embedded in the photograph’s digital storage record.
Torres opened it.
Michael Vale appeared on screen.
He sat inside a car at night, breathing heavily.
“If Adrian sees this, then I failed.”
Adrian’s chest tightened.
Michael continued.
“Father told me about Meridian. He says Julian and Samuel are dead, but I’ve seen both of them. They’re working together, or pretending to.”
Daniel leaned closer.
“Samuel and Julian were allies?”
“At first,” Michael said in the recording. “They planned to force Father to return the trust. But Samuel wants all of it. He has been manipulating Julian for years.”
Michael looked over his shoulder.
“I found Hannah. I found our daughter.”
Hannah began crying.
“I held Lily once. She opened her eyes and grabbed my finger.”
Lily stared at the screen.
Michael smiled faintly.
“I wanted to wake Hannah. Father wouldn’t allow it. He said the only way to protect them was to erase every connection to me.”
Adrian’s anger rose.
“Michael refused.”
The recording continued.
“Father changed Meridian’s succession clause. If they kill me, Lily inherits my position. He believes that will make them afraid to touch her.”
Richard had turned a baby into a legal shield.
Michael wiped blood from his temple.
“I don’t trust him. I don’t trust anyone.”
A sound came from outside the car.
Michael looked toward it.
“Adrian, Samuel has someone inside Vale Holdings. Someone close to you. It isn’t Daniel.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
The message continued.
“The insider has been beside you since childhood.”
Adrian’s mind raced.
He had few people from childhood remaining.
His housekeeper, Mrs. Bell.
His family attorney, Charles Wynn.
His godmother, Margaret Vale.
Margaret.
The nurse who stayed with Hannah after Lily’s birth had also been named Margaret.
Hannah looked at Adrian.
“Your aunt worked as a nurse?”
“Before she married.”
The video shook.
Michael whispered, “She knows where the original Meridian ledger is hidden.”
The car door opened.
A woman’s voice said, “Michael, give me the camera.”
The recording ended.
Hannah recognized the voice.
“The nurse.”
Adrian stared at the black screen.
Margaret Vale had raised him after his parents died.
She had attended the wedding.
She had disappeared during the blackout.
Daniel’s phone rang.
He answered.
A woman spoke.
“Daniel, this is Margaret. Bring Lily to the Vale estate before sunrise.”
Daniel activated the speaker.
Adrian asked, “Why?”
Margaret’s voice remained calm.
“Because Samuel Mercer is not the person controlling Meridian.”
“Who is?”
A pause.
“Lily’s father.”
The call ended.
Hannah stood so suddenly that her chair fell backward.
“Michael is dead.”

Adrian looked at the frozen image of his brother.
For the first time in eight years, he was no longer certain.
