Chapter 9 - The Mother on the Screen

Emily replayed the footage until the battery warning flashed. Evelyn stood behind the glass for eleven seconds. Her movements appeared stiff, almost mechanical. She pointed toward Emily's bag, then looked to someone outside the frame. Vanessa nodded and planted the necklace.
Rose insisted Evelyn had been drugged or coerced. Daniel agreed. Emily wanted to agree, but the image wounded her in a place logic could not reach. For years she had dreamed of discovering that her mother survived. She had never imagined survival might place Evelyn among those trying to destroy her.
Vanessa called the disposable phone. She sounded terrified.
"Gregory knows the drive is missing. He will kill me."
Emily asked why she obeyed Evelyn.
Vanessa explained that the veiled woman did not introduce herself as Evelyn. She called herself Eleanor and claimed to be Daniel's grandmother. Vanessa had seen old photographs, but age and medication changed the woman's face enough to create doubt. The woman promised evidence that Gregory murdered Vanessa's father. In return, Vanessa had to create a public scandal around Emily and force Daniel to display Camera Three.
"Why force him to show the camera if it revealed you?" Emily asked.
"Because the original plan was for the altered loop to show you taking the necklace from the museum case. Gregory changed the files again. He wanted me exposed and you arrested."
The conspiracy had layers designed to sacrifice everyone except Gregory.
Vanessa offered to testify if Daniel guaranteed protection. Lena arranged a safe location at a courthouse annex. Emily, Daniel, and Rose arrived separately to reduce risk.
Vanessa entered through an underground garage wearing a hooded coat. Before she reached the elevator, a maintenance truck struck the security barrier. Smoke grenades filled the garage. Marcus emerged with armed men.
Emily saw him seize Vanessa. She ran after them despite Daniel's warning. Rose followed, firing at the truck tires. Vanessa broke free long enough to throw Emily a keycard marked ST. ORISON - LEVEL 7.
"She is there!" Vanessa screamed. "Both of them are there!"
Marcus dragged her into the truck. It crashed through the side exit and vanished into traffic.
Both of them.
Evelyn and Eleanor.
Lena traced the keycard to a private elevator at St. Orison Institute. The seventh floor did not appear on architectural plans. Gregory owned the land through a shell corporation. Marcus's security company controlled the building.
They planned a raid, but the warrant judge delayed approval after receiving a sealed national-security objection filed by Gregory's attorneys. Lena suspected corruption. Daniel proposed entering without authorization. Rose supported him. Emily refused to let them decide for her.
"We go tonight," she said. "But we do not go blindly."
Using archive maps, she discovered that St. Orison had been built over an older hydrotherapy hospital connected to the same underground river that ran beneath Ashcroft House. The tunnels provided a route beneath the security perimeter.
Before leaving, Emily opened the brass box again. The ring inside bore Eleanor's crest. When pressed against the map, its raised pattern aligned with hidden marks indicating a chamber below Level 7.
At midnight, they entered the river tunnel.
Halfway to the institute, they found Vanessa's silver gown floating in the water.
Pinned to it was a note written in blood.
Vanessa admitted that she had resented Emily before meeting her. Anonymous packages had arrived for months containing photographs of Daniel smiling beside Emily in the archives and copies of trust pages implying that Emily would own the estate. Each package included a pressed white rose. The manipulation had been patient, intimate, and designed to turn Vanessa's grief into a weapon.
The silence that followed was never empty. It carried the weight of every person who had chosen comfort over truth, every signature obtained through fear, and every locked door mistaken for safety. Emily had learned through restoration that damaged paper could not be returned to its untouched state. The stains remained. The missing fibers remained. Honest repair did not pretend otherwise; it made the damage visible and built strength around it. The same would have to be true of the Ashcroft family.
Emily recorded every new fact in a plain notebook rather than on the Ashcroft network. Dates, names, contradictions, and exact phrases filled the pages. It was the method Evelyn had taught her when she was a child: never trust memory alone when powerful people benefit from confusion. Each entry transformed fear into sequence, and sequence into proof.

The blood on Vanessa's note was not hers. Laboratory testing matched it to a sample collected from Evelyn decades earlier, yet the blood was fresh. Gregory had used Evelyn herself to write a threat against her daughter, turning proof of survival into psychological torture. Emily stopped treating his cruelty as impulsive. Every wound he created was designed to distort the meaning of evidence.
ONE DAUGHTER FOR ANOTHER.
