Chapter 11 - Eleanor's Last Command

Emily tore the ring from her neck and jammed it into the ventilation control before the gas thickened. The old mechanism sparked, stopping one vent but not the others. Gregory cursed and ordered Marcus to retrieve the ring.

Gunfire erupted beyond the glass. Lena's officers struck the outer doors. Daniel appeared in the observation booth above, using a fire extinguisher to break the control window. He dropped into the theater, landed badly on his injured shoulder, and reached Evelyn before Marcus could aim.

Emily threw a metal tray. It struck Marcus's wrist, sending the gun beneath Eleanor's bed. Gregory plunged the syringe toward Evelyn, but Eleanor seized his sleeve with surprising strength.

"You were always a coward," she said.

Gregory struck her. Daniel tackled him. The four of them crashed against the terminal while alarms screamed and the gas turned the lights hazy.

Rose entered through the service door with Vanessa supporting her. Vanessa knew a maintenance code from Marcus and opened the emergency exhaust. Fresh air rushed into the room.

Marcus recovered his gun and aimed at Emily.

Rose stepped between them.

The shot struck her below the ribs.

Lena fired once. Marcus fell.

Gregory escaped through the open wall panel, triggering a lockdown that sealed half the floor. Lena pursued him while Daniel freed Evelyn. Emily knelt beside Rose, pressing against the wound.

"Do not leave again," Emily begged.

Rose managed a faint smile. "That sounds like an order."

Eleanor directed Vanessa to a hidden switch beneath the bed. It opened an emergency staircase descending to the river tunnels. They could not move both elderly women quickly, so Daniel carried Evelyn while officers guided Eleanor in a wheelchair. Rose was placed on a medical stretcher.

As they descended, Eleanor explained what the trust required. At sunrise on Emily's birthday, a verification window would open for one hour. Eleanor had to confirm Emily's identity using the ring and a phrase known only to Evelyn. If they failed, control would revert to Gregory under a fraudulent amendment.

"Why me?" Emily asked.

"Because your mother was the only person I trusted," Eleanor said. "And because blood alone should never determine who holds power."

They reached the lower tunnel, but Gregory had flooded the primary exit. Water rose around the wheels of Eleanor's chair. Behind them, institute guards entered the stairwell.

Vanessa revealed another passage leading to the old chapel. It required someone to remain behind and hold a manual gate open. Daniel prepared to do it, but Rose, barely conscious, caught his hand.

"You owe Emily a life," she whispered. "Do not waste it trying to look noble."

Lena stayed with the mechanism until everyone crossed, then escaped as the gate fell. They emerged into the chapel moments before police reinforcements finally arrived with a valid federal warrant.

Gregory was gone.

Marcus was alive but critically wounded. Vanessa entered protective custody. Rose went into surgery. Evelyn remained unconscious.

Eleanor was taken to a secure hospital under Lena's guard. Before dawn, she asked to speak privately with Emily and Daniel.

"Gregory will not run," she warned. "He will go to the place where the succession began."

"Ashcroft House," Daniel said.

Eleanor shook her head.

"The ballroom. He built the accusation there because the final verification must happen there. At sunrise, every lie returns to its first witness."

Emily looked toward the pale horizon.

As they fled, Eleanor told Daniel that leadership was not proven by inheritance, sacrifice, or public courage. It was proven by what a person refused to become when power finally arrived. Daniel looked toward Emily rather than answering. The lesson settled between them because both knew the coming transfer would test her more severely than Gregory's attacks.

Emily recorded every new fact in a plain notebook rather than on the Ashcroft network. Dates, names, contradictions, and exact phrases filled the pages. It was the method Evelyn had taught her when she was a child: never trust memory alone when powerful people benefit from confusion. Each entry transformed fear into sequence, and sequence into proof.

During the escape, Evelyn briefly opened her eyes and gripped Emily's sleeve. She traced two circles on Emily's palm, then joined them with a line. Emily thought it was a meaningless motion caused by medication. Eleanor recognized the symbol and began to cry. It was the private mark used on the twins' birth bracelets.

Her birthday had begun.
