Chapter 13 - The Witness at Her Birth
The transfer made Emily one of the most powerful shareholders in the country before breakfast. News helicopters gathered beyond the estate gates. Reporters announced Gregory's fraud, Eleanor's survival, and Vanessa's arrest. None knew about the second safeguard.
Daniel's father, Charles Ashcroft, had died when Daniel was sixteen. Family history described him as weak, charming, and uninvolved in business. Evelyn's message suggested otherwise.
Eleanor refused to discuss Charles until they reached the secure hospital. There, with Evelyn still unconscious and Rose recovering from surgery, she admitted that Charles had helped create the Mercer Trust. He was present at Emily's birth because Evelyn feared Gregory would switch records or abduct the child.
"Was Charles my father?" Emily asked.
Daniel went still.
Eleanor answered immediately. "No. But he loved your mother."
Years before Emily's birth, Charles and Evelyn uncovered Gregory's first network of shell charities. They became close. Evelyn later married journalist Samuel Carter, Emily's father, who died in a suspicious car crash before Emily was born. Charles believed Gregory caused it.
At the hospital, Evelyn woke for less than a minute. Her eyes found Emily. Confusion gave way to recognition so pure that Emily's anger dissolved.
"My little star," Evelyn whispered.
Emily took her hand. "What is the password?"
Evelyn's gaze shifted to Daniel. Terror entered her face. "Charles did not die in the plane."
Monitors sounded. Doctors rushed in. Evelyn was sedated before explaining.
Daniel's official family history stated that Charles died when his private plane crashed into the Atlantic. No body was recovered. The similarity to Rose's staged death was impossible to ignore.
Lena searched international records and found a man matching Charles's age and medical history living under the name Adrian Vale, Vanessa's father.
Vanessa had always believed Adrian was her biological father and that he died five years earlier. DNA from archived medical samples proved he was Charles Ashcroft.
Daniel and Vanessa were half siblings.
The discovery explained Vanessa's resentment, Gregory's hold over her, and her father's secret investigation. It did not explain the password.
Vanessa agreed to speak from protective custody. She described a music box Adrian kept locked in his study. Before his death, he told her it belonged to "the child who would correct the family." Gregory seized it after the funeral.
Police searched Gregory's properties and found nothing. Emily remembered the first night in the ballroom, when Vanessa opened her handbag. The necklace had been stored in a velvet case shaped like a music box. During the confusion, Celeste Ashcroft had removed the empty case from the evidence table.
Gregory's wife had barely been questioned.
Lena issued an alert, but Celeste had left the estate before dawn. Her car was found near Blackstone Bridge, the same place Evelyn's death had been staged. On the passenger seat lay the velvet case.
Inside was a music cylinder engraved with numbers.
When Daniel played it on the ballroom's antique piano mechanism, the melody formed letters through a cipher Eleanor recognized.
The password was EMILY IS NOT THE HEIR.
Emily stared at the words.
The succession had given her control, but the second safeguard suggested the true heir was someone else.
At that moment, Rose's hospital room was found empty.
On her pillow lay a note.
Vanessa received the DNA result in silence. Learning that Charles was her father gave shape to a lifetime of contradictions: his affection, his distance, and Gregory's strange authority over him. She did not ask Daniel to call her sister. Instead, she gave Lena every message she had exchanged with Marcus and signed a confession to planting the necklace. It was the first choice she made without calculating how it would affect her status.
Emily recorded every new fact in a plain notebook rather than on the Ashcroft network. Dates, names, contradictions, and exact phrases filled the pages. It was the method Evelyn had taught her when she was a child: never trust memory alone when powerful people benefit from confusion. Each entry transformed fear into sequence, and sequence into proof.

Charles's music cylinder also contained a second melody too faint for the first machine to reproduce. A restoration specialist isolated it and found a sequence of dates corresponding to unsolved attacks on Vine members. The final date was still in the future: the night of the Founders' Gala. Charles had predicted that Gregory would return to the ballroom for one last division.
