Chapter 15 - The Sister Who Chose a Side

For one suspended moment, Emily heard only the river beneath Blackstone Bridge. Lena stood above them with Rose held against the rail, a gun pressed beneath her jaw. The detective who had defended Emily, challenged Gregory, and risked her career inside St. Orison now looked like a stranger assembled from familiar pieces.
Daniel moved slightly in front of Emily.
"Do not," Lena warned. "I have waited twenty-eight years to speak to her without an Ashcroft deciding what I am allowed to say."
Celeste raised both hands. "Lena, Gregory lied to you."
"Everyone says that when their version begins to fail."
Lena had grown up in state care under another name. At sixteen, Gregory found her and showed her records claiming Evelyn chose to keep Emily while abandoning the second twin. He paid for Lena's education and guided her into law enforcement. She believed he was helping her expose the family that stole her life.
Years later, she discovered Gregory's crimes, but by then she was trapped. He held evidence linking her to illegal searches, witness intimidation, and the deaths of two corrupt physicians. Lena began building a case against him while continuing to feed him selected information. She had manipulated both sides, hoping to seize the trust and dismantle Ashcroft Global herself.
"You could have come to me," Emily said.
Lena's laugh broke. "You had a mother. An aunt. A name. I had files with half the pages removed."
"I had a funeral and twenty-one years of lies."
The sisters looked at each other across the dark road, alike only around the eyes.
Rose whispered that Evelyn never chose between them. During the attack on the clinic, Rose carried Emily because she was nearest. Charles carried the second baby. Gregory intercepted his car. For years, Rose believed both Charles and the infant had died. She learned the truth only after Adrian's staged death.
Lena's grip tightened. "Convenient."
Emily stepped around Daniel. "Take my share of the trust. I will sign whatever you want. Let Rose go."
Daniel objected, but Emily kept moving.
"You would surrender that easily?" Lena asked.
"Not easily. Willingly. There is a difference."
The music box in Celeste's hands began to play by itself. A hidden compartment opened, activated by proximity to both sisters' voices. Inside was a small transmitter and a final recording from Charles.
His voice carried through the night.
"To Evelyn's daughters: the trust was never meant to choose one of you. It activates only when both reject Gregory's demand to own it alone. Division was his weapon. Unity is the safeguard."
Lena's expression collapsed.
The gun lowered a fraction.
A shot rang from the trees.
Rose fell. Lena staggered as the bullet grazed her arm. Daniel pulled Emily behind the bridge support while Celeste fired toward the darkness with a weapon hidden inside the music box. Armed men moved among the trees.
Gregory stepped into the headlights.
He was bruised, wet from the tunnels, and smiling.
"Touching," he said. "But Charles always mistook sentiment for strategy."
Lena turned her gun on him. Gregory held up a phone showing a live feed from the secure hospital. Evelyn and Eleanor's rooms were empty. Nurses lay unconscious in the corridor.
"They are alive," Gregory said. "For now."
Emily's temporary control of Ashcroft Global had frozen his accounts, but he still possessed the two women required to validate or destroy every historic claim. He demanded the ring, the music box, and both sisters' signatures before midnight.
Lena looked at Emily. Years of resentment remained, but something new stood beside it: recognition.
"He raised me to believe you were the enemy," Lena said.
Emily reached for her hand. "Then disappoint him."
Lena fired at the bridge lights. Darkness swallowed the road. Celeste pulled Rose toward the embankment while Daniel led Emily through an old drainage passage. Bullets struck stone behind them.
They reached a hidden Vine safe house before dawn. Rose's wound was serious but survivable. Vanessa arrived under federal escort with evidence seized from Marcus. For the first time, Emily, Daniel, Lena, Rose, Celeste, and Vanessa occupied one room without knowing who would betray whom next.
The second safeguard recognized Emily and Lena as joint heirs. Together they could control the trust. Together they could also trigger a release of every sealed file Gregory had spent decades hiding.
Emily prepared to activate it.
A warning appeared on the screen.
RELEASE WILL EXPOSE ALL PROTECTED IDENTITIES, INCLUDING THE LOCATION OF EVELYN MERCER AND ELEANOR ASHCROFT.
Below it, a second message arrived from Gregory.
COME TO THE FOUNDERS' GALA TONIGHT. BRING YOUR SISTER. ONE OF YOUR MOTHERS WILL WALK AWAY.
Emily stared at the words.
Lena stood beside her, blood soaking through the bandage on her arm.
Daniel placed the Ashcroft ring on the table. Vanessa added the diamond necklace. Celeste set down the music box. Three objects, three keys, and one final event designed as a trap.
Outside, the city woke to headlines declaring Emily victorious and Gregory defeated.
Inside the safe house, Emily understood that neither was true.
She pressed the button to accept Gregory's invitation.
The screen changed to a live image of the ballroom at Ashcroft House. Guests were already arriving, unaware that the gala had been arranged by a fugitive.
At the center of the empty dance floor stood two veiled women.
One was Evelyn.
The other appeared to be Eleanor.
Then one of them lifted her veil.
Emily leaned toward the screen, unable to breathe.
The face beneath it belonged to neither woman.
It belonged to someone whose funeral Daniel had attended twelve years earlier.
His mother.
The woman looked directly into the camera and smiled.
"Bring me my daughters," she said. "It is time they learned who truly began the Ashcroft war."
The feed ended.
Before accepting the invitation, Emily used her new authority to establish an independent victim fund and transfer control of the family archives to a public trust. Even if Gregory killed her, the evidence would no longer belong to one heir or one dynasty. Lena watched the signatures and finally understood that Emily's offer on the bridge had not been weakness. It had been the first move Gregory could not predict.

The safe house archive contained one last sealed envelope addressed jointly to Emily and Lena. Neither opened it. For the first time, the sisters agreed that a secret would not dictate their next move before they were ready. They placed it between the ring and the necklace, a promise that after the gala they would read it together—if both survived.
And before anyone in the room could speak, Daniel quietly reached for the gun beneath his coat.
