Chapter 14 - The Sister in the Foundation
Emily had never known she had a sister. Eleanor claimed Evelyn gave birth only once. Evelyn was too weak to answer. Rose had vanished despite her wounds, using forged discharge papers and a stolen ambulance.
The password opened the second safeguard. A family tree appeared, but several names were encrypted. At the center were two infant records created on Emily's birthday. One listed Emily Carter. The other listed an unnamed female child transferred to the Eleanor Foundation's care.
Eleanor finally revealed the truth. Evelyn had delivered twins.
Gregory's men attacked the clinic during the birth. To protect both children, Charles separated them. Emily went with Rose. The second baby was placed with a foundation nurse until safe arrangements could be made. Before Evelyn could retrieve her, the nurse disappeared.
"You let my mother believe her child was dead," Emily said.
"I believed the child was dead," Eleanor replied. "The nurse's car was found burned."
The second safeguard had been designed in case the missing twin survived. Control of the trust belonged jointly to both sisters. Emily's transfer was temporary until the second heir was located or legally declared dead.
Evidence pointed toward Vanessa. Her birth records had been altered by Adrian Vale. She was the right age, had no verified maternal history, and carried the silver vine bracelet passed among Evelyn's protectors.
A rapid DNA test was arranged.
Vanessa was not Emily's sister.
She was Charles's daughter, as expected, but unrelated to Evelyn.
The bracelet had belonged to Adrian, who gave it to Vanessa shortly before his death. He said it identified members of an old network called the Vine, created to protect witnesses from Gregory. Rose, Marcus, Celeste, and at least one person inside the police had all worn versions.
Marcus regained consciousness and offered information in exchange for protection. He admitted helping Gregory confine Eleanor and Evelyn. He also claimed Celeste had secretly undermined Gregory for years. The necklace plot was intended to force the hidden heirs into the open, though Vanessa had not understood the full design.
"Where is the twin?" Lena asked.
Marcus smiled through cracked lips. "She has been beside Emily since the investigation began."
Suspicion fell on everyone: Vanessa, Lena, a nurse, even Rose. DNA records were requested from all women of the correct age who had close access to the case. Before results returned, the laboratory server was hacked and samples destroyed.
Daniel discovered that the breach came from his own credentials. Someone had used a device registered to his late father's estate. The signal originated at Blackstone Bridge.
Emily and Daniel drove there with Lena. Beneath the bridge, they found Celeste waiting beside the river. She held no weapon. In her hands was the velvet music box.
Celeste confessed that she had served the Vine long before marrying Gregory. She helped fake Evelyn's crash and later tried to rescue her from St. Orison. She failed repeatedly because another member betrayed every plan.
"Rose?" Emily asked.
Celeste shook her head. "The betrayal came from the missing child. Gregory found her first and raised her to believe Evelyn abandoned her."
Headlights appeared on the bridge above. A figure stepped from a black car, holding Rose at gunpoint.
It was Detective Lena Ortiz.
She aimed down at Emily.
Celeste explained that the Vine bracelet did not mark innocence. It marked obligation. Members had protected witnesses, but some had also lied, stolen, and killed in the belief that a larger truth justified them. Evelyn eventually rejected that logic. Gregory embraced it completely. Emily understood that defeating him would require more than possessing evidence; it would require refusing to become his mirror.

Lena's personnel record showed unexplained absences on the anniversaries of Evelyn's disappearance. She had spent those days visiting abandoned clinics and questioning retired nurses. Whatever Gregory taught her to believe, some part of her had never accepted his story. Her investigation had not begun with Emily's arrival; Emily's arrival merely forced her to choose what to do with the truth.
"Hello, sister," Lena said.
