Chapter 7 - The Father Who Wasn't His Father)

Ethan read the name until it stopped looking like language.

Thomas Bennett.

He looked at Laura.

"Who is he?"

Laura did not answer.

"Who is Thomas Bennett?"

"My first husband."

The room became silent.

Robert Carter had raised Ethan from infancy.

Every school form.

Every birthday.

Every family photograph.

Ethan had never questioned that Robert was his biological father.

Laura continued quietly.

"Thomas died before you were born."

"How?"

"A construction accident."

"Whose construction company?"

Laura looked down.

"Carter Development."

Ethan understood before she said more.

"My father worked for Robert?"

"Thomas was an engineer."

"And Bennett was your married name."

"Yes."

"Then why did you become Laura Carter?"

"Robert married me when you were eleven months old."

Ethan almost laughed.

"Why would he raise another man's child?"

Laura's eyes filled with shame.

"Because of Thomas."

Detective Ruiz leaned forward.

"What about him?"

Laura hesitated.

"Thomas discovered the first fraud at Carter Development."

History was repeating itself.

"He found falsified inspections on several buildings. Cheap materials. Bribed inspectors. Robert was still working under his own father then."

"Did Thomas report it?"

"He planned to."

"What happened?"

Laura's voice dropped.

"He fell from the ninth floor of a construction site."

Emily whispered, "You think Robert killed him."

"I spent years trying not to think that."

Ethan stared at the birth certificate.

"But why adopt me?"

"He never legally adopted you."

"What?"

"Robert changed your records."

Ethan looked at Ruiz.

She was already writing notes.

Laura said, "Thomas created a small trust for you before he died. He had inherited land from his family. At the time it wasn't worth much."

"How much?"

"Maybe two hundred thousand dollars."

"That's not enough to explain this."

"It wasn't then."

Laura looked at him.

"Now the land sits beneath most of downtown Northbridge."

Ethan felt the air leave his lungs.

Northbridge.

Carter Development's largest project.

Office towers.

Luxury apartments.

A hotel.

Retail complexes.

Billions in property value.

"Robert told me his company bought that land."

"No."

"Then how?"

"He controlled it through your trust."

"Why would he have control?"

"Because after Thomas died, Robert became executor."

"How?"

"He was Thomas's business partner."

Ethan looked back at the encrypted files.

Ruiz opened documents.

Trust amendments.

Property transfers.

Loans.

Signatures.

For thirty-five years Robert had used assets belonging to Ethan's trust as collateral for Carter Development projects.

If Ethan was legally Thomas Bennett's son rather than Robert's, then half the company's most valuable holdings depended on agreements Ethan had never knowingly authorized.

Emily looked at him.

"That's what Robert is afraid of."

Ruiz nodded.

"If these documents are authentic, he could lose control of the company."

Laura added, "And face decades of fraud charges."

Ethan thought of Daniel.

"Then why does Daniel matter?"

Laura stared at the birth certificate.

"Because I think Robert made the same mistake twice."

Ruiz understood first.

"If Daniel is Robert's biological child, the Carter family trust recognizes him. Ethan isn't Robert's biological child, so Ethan shouldn't be an heir under the Carter trust."

"Exactly."

"But Robert treated him as one."

"Because he needed Ethan's assets."

Emily frowned.

"So now there are two trusts."

Laura nodded.

"The Bennett trust, which Robert stole from Ethan, and the Carter trust, which Daniel will gain rights to when he turns eighteen."

Ethan saw the structure.

Robert had spent decades building his empire on two separate foundations.

One stolen from a child who was not his.

One hidden from a child who was.

"And my baby?" Ethan asked.

Nobody answered immediately.

Emily squeezed his hand.

Laura said, "Your baby becomes another Bennett heir."

The room went cold.

Ruiz looked at Ethan.

"If the trust passes by bloodline, your son could acquire rights Robert doesn't control."

"He's not even born."

"Which may be why Gregory said Robert wanted the medical records."

Ethan remembered Diane standing over Emily in the basement.

The cruel words.

The locked door.

His father's insistence that she stay there.

It had not been a random argument.

"Emily," he said. "Why were they at the house today?"

She looked terrified.

"Diane came first."

"For what?"

"She brought papers."

"What papers?"

"She said they were routine documents for the company."

"What kind?"

"A spousal consent."

Ethan knew the term.

Certain corporate transactions required a spouse to acknowledge rights.

"What did it say?"

"I didn't read all of it. Diane kept pointing at the signature page."

"You didn't sign?"

"No."

"What happened?"

"She got angry."

Emily swallowed.

"Then your father arrived."

"What did he want?"

"The same thing."

"What was the document?"

Emily looked at Laura.

"I think it transferred any interest our child might inherit from the Bennett trust."

Ethan felt sick.

"You told them no."

"Yes."

"And they locked you downstairs."

Emily nodded.

"Robert said we weren't leaving until I signed."

"How did you get hurt?"

Emily looked down.

"I tried to get past Diane on the stairs."

Ethan waited.

"She shoved me."

Laura covered her face.

Ethan stood so quickly the chair fell backward.

Ruiz stopped him.

"Where are you going?"

"To find him."

"No."

"He tried to hurt my wife and son."

"And if you attack him, you give him exactly what he needs."

Ethan stared at her.

Ruiz said, "We have evidence now. Let me use it."

Her phone rang.

She listened briefly.

Then looked at Ethan.

"We may have found Gregory."

"Alive?"

"We don't know."

"Where?"

Ruiz's face hardened.

"At Lake Mercer."

May you like

Again.

Every road led back to the lake.
