Chapter 11 - The Person Behind Robert)

Margaret Sloan was found twelve hours later inside a hotel room under another name.

She had not been kidnapped.

She had run.

Ruiz questioned her.

Margaret admitted that she recognized Nicholas's name the moment Ethan mentioned the insurance brokerage.

Nicholas was her only son.

He had worked with Robert for more than twenty years.

She had hidden that fact.

"Why?" Ethan demanded.

Margaret sat across from him in the police interview room.

"Because I was ashamed."

"Of what?"

"Of how much he became like Robert."

Nicholas had grown up watching his mother lose her career after challenging Robert.

Instead of hating Robert, he admired him.

Power protected people.

Money erased mistakes.

Fear created loyalty.

Nicholas began working indirectly for Carter Development in his twenties.

By forty, he controlled insurance structures, offshore accounts, and legal risk for multiple Robert-owned entities.

"Did he create the policy on Emily?"

Margaret nodded.

"Probably."

"Did he know about Daniel?"

"I don't know."

"Did he know about my mother?"

"Yes."

Ethan stared.

Margaret continued.

"Nicholas once told me the most valuable thing Robert ever owned wasn't the company."

"What was it?"

"Secrets."

Detective Ruiz entered.

"We found Diane."

She had never gone to the airport terminal.

Security footage showed her leaving the parking garage in a second vehicle.

The car belonged to Nicholas Sloan.

Ruiz placed a photograph on the table.

Nicholas.

Fifty-two.

Gray hair.

Expensive suit.

Ethan recognized him immediately.

He had attended board meetings.

Company retreats.

His wedding.

Nicholas had stood twenty feet away when Ethan married Emily.

"Where are they?"

"We don't know."

Margaret whispered, "I might."

Everyone looked at her.

Nicholas owned a lodge in the mountains through a holding company.

Police drove there.

Empty.

But investigators discovered recently burned documents in a fireplace.

One survived partially.

A handwritten payment schedule.

The initials RC appeared in one column.

NS in another.

DB in a third.

Diane Brooks.

And a fourth set of initials.

TC.

Ruiz asked, "Who's TC?"

Margaret had no answer.

Laura did.

She looked at the paper and went white.

"Thomas Carter."

Ethan frowned.

"My biological father was Thomas Bennett."

"Not him."

Laura swallowed.

"Robert's older brother."

Ethan had never heard of him.

"Robert had a brother?"

"Yes."

"Where is he?"

Laura looked at him.

"Officially? Dead."

Ethan almost laughed.

"Of course."

Thomas Carter supposedly died in South America in 1998.

No body had been returned.

He had helped run the company before Robert took full control.

Laura remembered him as quieter than Robert.

More calculating.

"Could he be alive?"

"I don't know."

Margaret did.

"Yes."

Everyone turned.

She closed her eyes.

"I saw him six years ago."

The conspiracy widened instantly.

Thomas Carter had remained hidden while Robert became the public face of the empire.

According to Margaret, Thomas controlled offshore structures Robert could not publicly touch.

"If Robert goes to prison," she said, "Thomas can preserve the money."

Emily asked, "And if Robert started becoming a liability?"

Margaret looked at her.

"Thomas would remove him."

That evening Robert requested to speak with Ethan from jail.

Alone.

Ethan went.

His father sat behind thick glass.

He looked smaller without the expensive suit.

But not defeated.

Ethan picked up the phone.

Robert did the same.

"You found Thomas."

It was not a question.

"He's alive."

Robert looked away.

"Yes."

"Was he part of what happened to Mom?"

"Part."

"Sarah?"

Robert's eyes hardened.

"Thomas killed Sarah."

Ethan stared.

"And you covered it up."

"I didn't know until afterward."

"Liar."

"Believe what you want."

"What about Laura?"

Robert leaned closer to the glass.

"The crash was Thomas's idea."

Ethan's heartbeat quickened.

"You helped."

"Yes."

The admission came without resistance.

For the first time Robert sounded tired.

"I wanted your mother gone. I wanted the records. I wanted control. But Sarah wasn't supposed to die."

"That doesn't make you innocent."

"I know."

Ethan had never heard those words from him.

Robert continued.

"Thomas has Diane."

"How do you know?"

"Because Diane called me."

"From where?"

"She said one sentence."

"What?"

Robert looked into Ethan's eyes.

"He knows about the baby."

Emily's son.

Robert continued.

"Thomas doesn't care about the insurance money."

"Then what does he want?"

"The Bennett trust audit never happens if there's no Bennett descendant available to trigger it."

Ethan understood.

Thomas did not need to kill Emily.

He needed Ethan's unborn son gone.

Robert lowered his voice.

"You think I'm the monster at the center of this family."

"Aren't you?"

Robert gave a broken smile.

"No, Ethan."

May you like

He looked almost afraid.

"I'm the monster who spent thirty years feeding a bigger one."
