Chapter 14 - The Last Order)

Emily remembered entering a wheelchair.
Dr. Pierce said he wanted another scan.
She remembered the elevator.
Then dizziness.
Now she woke with her head against cold metal.
The elevator was moving downward.
She pressed the emergency button.
Nothing.
Her phone was gone.
The doors opened into an underground loading corridor.
A man stood outside.
Nicholas Sloan.
Emily recognized him from Ethan's wedding photographs.
He smiled.
"I'm sorry this became complicated."
Emily gripped the wheelchair arms.
"Where are you taking me?"
"Somewhere private."
She tried to stand.
Pain shot through her back.
Her legs worked, but weakly.
Nicholas pushed the chair forward.
"Don't make this difficult."
"What do you want?"
"Nothing from you personally."
"My baby?"
Nicholas said nothing.
Emily felt terror sharpen into clarity.
She looked around.
Concrete corridor.
Storage rooms.
An exit sign thirty yards away.
Two security cameras.
Nicholas pushed her toward a vehicle bay.
A black van waited.
Emily remembered something Ruiz once told her.
People often survive by making dangerous people talk.
Not because talking changes them.
Because every minute creates opportunity.
"Robert's finished," Emily said.
Nicholas smiled.
"Robert was finished years ago."
"Thomas too."
That made him glance at her.
She continued.
"You worked for Thomas."
"I worked for stability."
"Is that what you call murdering people?"
"I never murdered anyone."
"You forged my insurance policy."
"Paperwork isn't murder."
"You helped them lock Ethan's mother away."
"I was twenty-five."
"You helped hide Mason."
"I wasn't involved then."
Emily heard it.
The pattern.
Every person inside the conspiracy drew a moral line just behind whatever they had personally done.
Nobody was responsible for the whole crime.
Only one small piece.
That was how monsters built systems.
They divided guilt until everyone believed they were merely doing paperwork.
Nicholas reached the van.
Emily said, "What happens after you take my baby?"
He froze.
He turned slowly.
"I never said anything about taking your baby."
"You didn't have to."
Nicholas studied her.
Then smiled.
"You're smarter than Robert said."
He leaned closer.
"Your son doesn't need to die."
Emily forced herself not to react.
"He needs to be born outside the legal structure Robert created."
"What does that mean?"
"If his birth is recorded under another identity before the Bennett trust receives notice, the audit can be delayed."
"For how long?"
"Long enough."
"You were going to steal my child."
"Temporarily."
Emily almost laughed.
"That's what you call it?"
"You would have been compensated."
Rage replaced fear.
Nicholas opened the van door.
Emily kicked the wheelchair brake.
He looked down.
She shoved herself upward.
Her legs nearly failed.
But she grabbed the metal door handle and screamed.
Nicholas seized her arm.
A fire alarm erupted.
Red lights flashed.
Nicholas froze.
Emily screamed again.
Footsteps thundered through the corridor.
Nicholas released her and ran.
He made it twenty yards.
Then Mason came around the corner.
Nicholas stopped.
Mason held no weapon.
He simply pointed toward the opposite corridor.
Gregory stood there.
Nicholas turned again.
Ruiz entered from the loading bay with three officers.
"Hands where I can see them!"
Nicholas surrendered.
Ethan reached Emily seconds later.
He nearly collapsed when he saw her standing.
He held her carefully.
"Are you hurt?"
"I'm okay."
"The baby?"
"Still kicking."
Ethan laughed and cried at the same time.
Emily touched his face.
"How did you find me?"
"Mason."
The boy approached.
Emily smiled weakly.
"You're getting really good at showing up in basements and corridors."
Mason shrugged.
"Bad family hobby."
Even Ruiz smiled.
Nicholas was taken away.
Dr. Pierce was arrested upstairs.
The final active piece of the conspiracy had failed.
Or so they believed.
Two weeks later Emily returned home.
The basement door had been removed.
Not unlocked.
Removed completely.
Ethan said he never wanted another locked door beneath their house.
Laura moved into a small apartment nearby.
She and Ethan did not become mother and son again overnight.
There were too many lost birthdays.
Too many years.
They started with coffee.
One hour every Wednesday.
Sometimes they spoke about the conspiracy.
Sometimes they talked about ordinary things.
Those conversations mattered more.
Mason returned to Gregory and Helen.
Legally, he began the process of changing his name to Mason Daniel Reed.
Robert remained in jail awaiting trial.
Thomas was held without bail.
Diane accepted a plea agreement in exchange for testimony.
Nicholas refused to cooperate.
The Bennett trust audit began.
Investigators expected years of litigation.
Ethan did something Robert never would have understood.
He ordered every recovered trust document released to regulators.
Even the ones that could cost Ethan money.
Emily asked him why.
"Because I'm tired of inheriting secrets."
Three months passed.
Winter arrived.
Emily's due date approached.
One evening Ethan found another envelope in the mailbox.
No return address.
His hands shook when he saw the handwriting.
Not Robert's.
Not Laura's.
Inside was a photograph.
Laura as a young woman.
Beside her stood another woman.
Sarah.
On the back was written:
Tell Laura I survived.
Ethan ran inside.
There was also an address.
Portland, Maine.
May you like
And one final sentence.
I am ready to come home.
