Chapter 6 - The Voice on the Tape)

The cassette was twenty-two years old.
Ruiz found a player in the police evidence department.
At 2:18 a.m., Ethan, Emily, Laura, and two detectives listened inside a private hospital conference room.
Static filled the speaker.
Then a boy's voice.
Ethan recognized himself.
He sounded terrified.
"Dad, I didn't do it."
Robert answered.
"You were there."
"But Kyle lit it."
"You handed him the lighter."
"I didn't know what he was doing."
"Nobody cares what you knew."
A younger Ethan began crying.
Robert's voice remained cold.
"The police can blame you, or they can blame Kyle."
"But Kyle's my friend."
"Then decide how much friendship is worth."
A third voice entered.
Laura.
"Robert, stop."
"This doesn't concern you."
"He's a child."
"He's my son."
"Then act like his father."
The recording jumped.
Another conversation.
Laura said, "You're not destroying another family to save your own reputation."
Robert answered, "Kyle's father signed the agreement."
"You paid him."
"I solved a problem."
"You threatened them."
"I protected Ethan."
"You protected yourself."
Another jump.
Laura's voice again.
"If Ethan ever learns what you did, he'll never forgive you."
Robert replied.
"He won't learn."
The tape ended.
Ethan remained motionless.
The fire had not been about protecting him from prosecution.
Robert had manipulated witnesses, paid Kyle's family to leave town, and buried the investigation.
Laura had objected.
Robert had turned her objection into a weapon.
Emily reached for Ethan's hand.
This time he let her.
Ruiz said, "This helps establish a pattern."
"Of what?"
"Obstruction. Witness intimidation. Possibly bribery."
"It doesn't prove murder."
"No."
"Or kidnapping."
"Not yet."
Ethan looked at the cassette.
"Who left it?"
Ruiz had already requested hospital security footage.
A technician entered five minutes later carrying a tablet.
The camera outside Emily's room had recorded a teenager.
Baseball cap.
Gray hoodie.
Head lowered.
He approached Emily's room, placed the box inside, and left.
At one point he turned toward the camera.
Laura gasped.
"Mason."
Ethan stared at the seventeen-year-old boy on the screen.
His brother.
He had Robert's jaw.
Laura's eyes.
Ethan felt an immediate, irrational certainty.
"He's here."
Police sealed the hospital exits.
Officers searched every floor.
They did not find Mason.
But another camera captured him leaving through a maintenance corridor seven minutes earlier.
He entered an older sedan.
The license plate was registered to Gregory Reed.
Ruiz called it in.
At 2:51 a.m., patrol officers located the sedan abandoned beneath an overpass.
Inside they found Gregory's wallet.
His phone.
And blood on the passenger seat.
No Mason.
No Gregory.
But there was one thing in the glove compartment.
A flash drive.
Ruiz returned to the hospital before dawn.
The drive contained hundreds of files.
Photographs.
Bank statements.
Property records.
Audio recordings.
Gregory Reed had been collecting evidence against Robert for years.
Some files were encrypted.
Others were easy to open.
One folder was named DANIEL.
Inside were photographs documenting Mason's childhood.
Age six.
Age eight.
Age eleven.
Age fourteen.
Some were ordinary.
Birthday cakes.
Fishing trips.
A school backpack.
Others were not.
One photograph showed a concrete building surrounded by fencing.
Another showed bruises on a child's wrists.
Ethan turned away from the screen.
Laura covered her mouth.
A document identified the property.
North Pines Youth Center.
Owned through three shell companies ultimately connected to Carter Development.
The facility had closed ten years earlier after allegations of abuse.
No charges had been filed.
Ruiz opened another document.
An intake record.
Name: Daniel Carter.
Alias: Patient 412.
Age: Two.
Ethan stared.
"He was two?"
Laura whispered, "Robert told me he was with a family."
Ruiz scrolled.
The record showed Daniel had entered at age two and remained until six.
Four years.
A child hidden inside an institution.
Emily began crying.
Ethan felt something colder than anger.
He imagined his brother learning to walk inside those walls.
Learning to speak.
Waiting for parents who never came.
Ruiz opened an audio file recorded by Gregory.
His voice filled the room.
"If you're hearing this, Robert knows I took Daniel."
A pause.
"My name is Gregory Reed. I worked security for Robert Carter. I helped him do things I will regret until I die."
Laura closed her eyes.
Gregory continued.
"I found Daniel at North Pines in 2015. Robert ordered me to transfer him to another facility. Instead, I took him home."
Another pause.
"Helen and I raised him as Mason. We told him he was ours because I didn't know how to tell a six-year-old that his real father wanted him erased."
Ethan looked at Laura.
She was shaking.
"I kept working for Robert because leaving would make him suspicious. I watched. I copied records. I waited for enough evidence to take him down."
Gregory's voice became strained.
"Three weeks ago Robert asked me to find Laura."
Emily looked at Ethan.
Three weeks again.
"He knows she's alive. I don't know how. I warned her. Then Robert asked something worse."
The recording paused.
"He asked me to investigate Emily Carter's pregnancy."
Ethan's entire body tightened.
Gregory continued.
"He wanted her medical records. He wanted to know whether the baby was a boy."
Emily's hand moved protectively over her stomach.
Their baby was a boy.
They had learned two months earlier.
Gregory's final words came slowly.
"If something happens to me, understand this. Robert isn't afraid of Laura anymore."
The tape crackled.
"He's afraid of the trust."
Ruiz frowned.
Ethan said, "The family trust?"
Gregory continued.
"Daniel turns eighteen next July. Ethan's son will be born before then. Robert has been hiding something inside the Carter trust for years. Something bigger than the company."
The recording ended.
Ethan looked at Emily.
"What bigger?"
Laura whispered, "I don't know."
Ruiz searched the drive.
A folder labeled TRUST was encrypted.
They could not open it.
But there was a text document beside it containing one sentence.
The password is the first lie Ethan ever believed.
They tried DEATH.
Wrong.
LAURA.
Wrong.
ACCIDENT.
Wrong.
FIRE.
Wrong.
Then Emily looked at Ethan.
"The first lie wasn't about your mother."
"What do you mean?"
"Your father was controlling your life long before she disappeared."
Ethan thought about childhood stories Robert repeated.
Family history.
The company.
His grandfather.
His own birth.
Then Laura suddenly whispered, "Try CARTER."
Ruiz typed it.
The folder opened.
Inside was Ethan's original birth certificate.
Ethan stared at the line identifying his father.
It did not say Robert Carter.
May you like
It said:
Thomas Bennett.
