Chapter 8 - WHAT THE VIEWERS SAW

The people at the door were not police officers.
They were paramedics.
A viewer had called emergency services after seeing Claire's bruise and hearing the argument.
Ryan immediately switched personalities.
He opened the door with a concerned expression.
"My wife is pregnant and very emotional."
Claire felt physically sick hearing him.
One paramedic, a woman named Nora, looked past Ryan.
"Mrs. Dawson?"
Claire stepped forward.
"I'm Claire."
Nora noticed the bruise.
"Do you want to be evaluated?"
Ryan answered.
"She was already checked."
Nora did not look at him.
She looked at Claire.
"Do you want to be evaluated?"
The question mattered.
Not does your husband think.
Not did he say.
Do you want.
Claire nodded.
"Yes."
Ryan exhaled sharply.
"Claire."
She ignored him.
The paramedics checked her vitals.
The baby's heart rate.
Claire described the impact against the laundry machine.
She did not minimize it.
She did not protect Ryan.
Elizabeth stood beside her.
Diane stayed near the armchair, furious and silent.
Nora asked Claire privately whether she felt safe staying in the home.
Claire looked toward Ryan.
He smiled gently.
The same smile he used during doctor appointments.
Claire said, "No."
The word changed the room.
Nora's expression remained calm.
"Do you have somewhere safe to go?"
"My mother's house."
"Good."
Ryan stepped forward.
"She's exaggerating because we had a fight."
Claire turned.
"You forged my signature."
Nora's eyes shifted toward him.
Ryan stopped talking.
Claire left with Elizabeth.
The hospital evaluation showed the baby was fine.
The bruise was painful but superficial.
Claire cried when she heard the heartbeat.
Elizabeth sat beside the bed holding her hand.
For nearly an hour neither spoke about Ryan.
Then Claire asked, "Why didn't you tell me about the money?"
Elizabeth looked down.
"He said you were ashamed."
"I would never be ashamed to ask you."
"I know that now."
"You should have called me."
"I should have."
Claire saw tears in her mother's eyes.
"He told me the doctor had warned you about stress."
Claire closed her eyes.
Ryan had used concern as a lock.
Elizabeth squeezed her hand.
"I'm sorry."
Claire looked at her mother.
"Did he ask for anything else?"
Elizabeth hesitated.
Claire noticed.
"What?"
"Access to your old education trust."
Claire sat up.
"What trust?"
The Carter family had set aside money years earlier.
Not a fortune.
Around forty thousand dollars remaining.
Claire had forgotten about it because she planned to leave it untouched for emergencies.
Elizabeth continued.
"He asked how withdrawals worked."
"When?"
"Six weeks ago."
"Did you give him access?"
"No."
Claire breathed.
Then Elizabeth added, "But I sent him a statement because he said a lender needed proof of family assets."
Claire felt cold.
Ryan now knew the account existed.
The next morning Claire woke to hundreds of messages.
The livestream had been screen-recorded and reposted everywhere.
Not just the final minutes.
Viewers had archived earlier broadcasts too.
People began comparing clips.
Diane telling Claire to cry.
Ryan striking furniture.
Claire flinching.
The supposed medical claims.
Fundraising links.
A former donor created a public archive.
Total donations appeared to exceed eighty-three thousand dollars.
Claire stared at the number.
She had seen almost none of it.
Ryan posted his own statement.
He claimed the family had been running an "experimental dramatized awareness campaign."
Claire read the sentence twice.
Then laughed.
He was trying to say it had all been acting.
Another post followed.
My wife participated voluntarily but is under extreme pregnancy-related stress.
Claire stopped laughing.
"He is blaming me."
Elizabeth took the phone.
"Don't answer yet."
Claire looked at her.
"I have to."
"No. You have to be smarter than he expects."
Elizabeth placed the black notebook on the table.
Claire had barely looked through it.
Now they opened every page.
The entries went back much farther than Claire expected.
Before the first livestream.
Before the alleged specialist.
Before the cane.
One page contained a heading.
Pregnancy campaign concepts.
Beneath it were ideas.
Emergency bed rest.
Possible fetal condition.
Financial pressure.
Mother crying alone.
Husband loses temper.
Claire turned the page.
May you like
Her hands went numb.
The earliest date was three days after Ryan learned she was pregnant.
