Chapter 11 - RYAN'S OFFER

Three days after Claire filed for divorce, Ryan sent an offer through his attorney.
He would agree to leave the house.
He would return fifteen thousand dollars.
He would sign over the truck.
In exchange, Claire would release a public statement saying she had participated in dramatized fundraising content voluntarily.
Claire read the proposal twice.
Then handed it back to Hannah.
"No."
Hannah nodded.
"I assumed."
"He's asking me to lie again."
"Yes."
Claire looked out the window.
"What happens if I refuse?"
"He continues fighting."
"Good."
Hannah raised an eyebrow.
Claire turned back.
"For months I thought survival meant keeping him calm."
Her voice steadied.
"I'm done helping him stay comfortable."
Ryan tried another approach.
He sent Claire a handwritten letter.
Seven pages.
He apologized.
He blamed stress.
He said fatherhood had frightened him.
He said the first fundraiser was meant to solve a temporary problem.
He said things spiraled.
He said Diane pushed him.
He said Claire had also benefited from household bills being paid.
The final paragraph asked her to remember who he used to be.
Claire read the letter in silence.
Then she opened the black notebook.
Pregnancy campaign concepts.
The first date.
Three days after the positive pregnancy test.
Things had not spiraled.
They had been designed.
Claire placed the letter into the evidence folder.
Two days later Hannah called.
"We found something."
Claire drove to the office.
A forensic accountant named Martin had traced more transfers.
Northline Digital had returned portions of the money to Ryan through cash-equivalent payments.
The arrangement resembled laundering.
Claire frowned.
"So Kevin helped him hide it?"
"Possibly."
Martin displayed a transaction timeline.
But one item stood apart.
A payment of seven thousand five hundred dollars to a fertility clinic.
Claire stared.
"My clinic?"
"No."
The clinic was in another state.
Claire looked confused.
"Why would Ryan pay a fertility clinic?"
Hannah exchanged a glance with Martin.
"We don't know yet."
Claire's stomach tightened.
"Find out."
The answer came forty-eight hours later.
Ryan had paid storage fees.
For frozen embryos.
Claire could not understand.
She and Ryan had never undergone IVF.
Never created embryos.
Hannah advised caution.
The account might belong to someone else.
Claire's mind raced.
Who?
The clinic would not disclose patient information.
But financial records revealed Ryan had been paying the account for nearly two years.
Before Claire became pregnant.
Before the livestreams.
Before the supposed financial crisis.
Claire drove home with a thousand questions.
Elizabeth was preparing dinner.
Claire told her.
Elizabeth went still.
"Two years?"
"Yes."
"Did Ryan ever talk about fertility treatment?"
"No."
Then Elizabeth remembered something.
At a Christmas dinner two years earlier, Diane had made a strange comment.
"If Claire takes too long, Ryan still has options."
Claire had thought it was an insult about age.
She was thirty then.
Now it sounded different.
That night Claire searched Ryan's old emails stored on a family tablet he had forgotten at Elizabeth's house months ago.
Most accounts had logged out.
One had not.
An old cloud backup.
Claire searched the fertility clinic name.
One result appeared.
Invoice.
She opened it.
The patient name was hidden inside an attached PDF preview.
Claire zoomed in.
Her breathing stopped.
The patient was not Ryan.
It was a woman.
Megan Walsh.
Kevin Walsh's younger sister.
Claire whispered the name.
Elizabeth sat beside her.
"Who is she?"
Claire remembered.
A woman from Ryan's office Christmas party.
Blonde hair.
Green dress.
Ryan had introduced her as a friend.
Claire opened another archived email.
Then another.
Hotel confirmation.
Restaurant receipt.
A message from Megan.
You promised before the baby comes, you'll decide.
Claire stared at the date.
Six weeks before Claire announced her pregnancy publicly.
The room went silent.

The financial scam had been hiding something else.
Ryan had another woman.
