Chapter 3 - THE BRUISE

The bruise appeared after an argument in the laundry area.
Claire had found three unopened medical envelopes inside Ryan's desk.
Real envelopes.
Real hospital statements.
The balances were small.
One hundred eighty dollars.
Two hundred forty-six.
Ninety-three.
Nothing close to the thousands Ryan claimed they owed.
She carried them into the living room.
"Explain this."
Ryan glanced at the papers.
"Those aren't everything."
"Then show me everything."
"I don't have time."
"Make time."
Diane was sitting at the dining table.
She looked up slowly.
Ryan walked toward Claire.
"You have no idea how complicated this is."
"Then explain it."
"Claire."
"Show me the twelve-thousand-dollar specialist bill."
Ryan stopped.
Silence.
Claire's pulse began racing.
"Show me."
Diane stood.
"You need to calm down."
Claire turned on her.
"Stay out of this."
Diane's face hardened.
"This is my son's house too."
"My house too."
Ryan took the statements from Claire.
"You are making yourself sick."
"No. You are making me suspicious."
He tore the pages in half.
Claire froze.
"Why did you do that?"
"They're irrelevant."
"Then why tear them?"
Ryan walked away.
Claire followed.
"Where is the money?"
"Stop."
"Where is it?"
Ryan turned sharply.
The movement startled Claire.
She stepped backward against the laundry basket.
Her hip struck the machine.
Pain shot through her side.
She gasped.
Ryan reached for her.
Claire shoved his hand away.
"Don't."
Diane appeared with the phone.
Claire stared at her.
"Are you recording?"
Diane lowered it.
"No."
Claire did not believe her.
That evening, a dark-purple bruise began spreading along Claire's outer belly where she had collided with the laundry machine.
She called her doctor.
The nurse told her to come in.
The baby was checked.
Healthy.
Claire cried with relief.
Ryan acted concerned in the examination room.
He held her hand.
He asked careful questions.
The nurse praised him for being attentive.
Claire said nothing.
On the drive home, Ryan was silent.
Then he said, "We should livestream tonight."
Claire looked at him.
"What?"
"People know you went to the hospital."
"How?"
Ryan hesitated.
Claire stared at him.
"How do they know?"
Diane had posted an update.
Without Claire's permission.
The post implied there had been a "scare."
Claire grabbed Ryan's phone.
The caption beneath an old photo of her had thousands of reactions.
Please pray for Claire and baby Dawson tonight.
Claire's hands shook.
"I told you not to post medical information."
Ryan took the phone back.
"It brought in twenty-seven hundred dollars."
Claire stared.
He realized too late that he had said the amount with excitement.
Not relief.
Excitement.
Claire whispered, "You are enjoying this."
"No."
"You are."
"I'm trying to keep us alive."
"We are not dying."
Ryan looked out the windshield.
That night Claire refused to go live.
Diane set up the phone anyway.
Claire stayed in the bedroom.
Ryan knocked.
Then knocked harder.
"Claire."
She locked the door.
"Go away."
"We need five minutes."
"No."
"People are worried."
"Let them be worried."
His voice lowered.
"You owe them an update."
Claire turned toward the door.
"I owe strangers nothing."
A long silence.
Then Ryan said, "You are being selfish."
Claire laughed once.
She could not believe the word.
Selfish.
The next morning she found a note beneath her coffee cup.
Mortgage due.
Electric due.
Hospital due.
Baby expenses due.
Ryan had written the amounts in red pen.
Claire spent the day calculating.
Something did not make sense.
Ryan earned enough to cover the mortgage.
She had maternity savings.
Their insurance had covered most prenatal care.
Even without donations, they should not be desperate.
She opened their joint banking app.
The balance was lower than expected.
Much lower.
Several transfers had been made into an account she did not recognize.
Dawson Media Holdings.
Claire searched the name.
Nothing.
That evening she confronted Ryan.
He looked at the transfer history and sighed.
"It's for taxes."
"Why is it called media?"
"Because the donations are technically online revenue."
Claire felt sick.
"You created a company?"
"For accounting."
"Without telling me?"
"Do you want the IRS taking everything?"
Claire did not answer.
Ryan kissed her forehead.
"You're exhausted."
May you like
She pulled away.
The following morning, the password to the joint account had been changed.
