Chapter 5 - THE FEAR MARKET

The clip went viral overnight.
Diane uploaded an edited version after Claire went to bed.
It showed Ryan striking the side table.
Claire recoiling.
The lamp falling.
What it did not show was Claire explaining the baby was healthy.
What it did not show was the argument about money.
The caption implied Ryan was under extreme pressure while caring for a medically fragile pregnant wife.
By morning the clip had been viewed more than six hundred thousand times.
Donations surged.
Ryan received sponsorship messages.
People offered gift cards.
A local church asked how it could help.
Claire found out because an old college friend texted her.
Are you safe?
Claire stared at the message.
Then another arrived.
I saw the video.
Call me.
Claire opened the social page.
She watched the clip once.
Then again.
Her body began shaking.
Ryan had turned her fear into entertainment.
She walked into the living room.
He was smiling at his phone.
"Take it down."
Ryan looked up.
"What?"
"The video."
"It is helping."
"It makes you look abusive."
Ryan shrugged.
"People interpret things."
"Take it down."
Diane entered carrying coffee.
"We raised nine thousand overnight."
Claire looked at her.
Diane said it proudly.
Nine thousand.
Claire whispered, "You are sick."
Diane laughed.
"Don't be dramatic."
Claire grabbed Ryan's phone.
He caught her wrist.
"Give it back."
"Delete the video."
"Give it back."
"Delete it."
Ryan squeezed harder.
Claire winced.
He immediately released her.
A red mark remained around her wrist.
Both of them stared at it.
Ryan looked frightened.
Not because he had hurt her.
Because it could be evidence.
"That was your fault."
Claire's face went still.
Ryan knew he had crossed something.
He softened his voice.
"You grabbed my phone."
Claire stepped backward.
"That was your fault."
She repeated his words.
He sighed.
"Claire."
"No."
She walked away.
That afternoon she called her mother.
Elizabeth answered immediately.
"Sweetheart."
Claire nearly told her everything.
Instead she heard Ryan's footsteps behind her.
She changed direction.
"How are you?"
Elizabeth asked.
Claire swallowed.
"Tired."
"Ryan told me the new doctor is helping."
Claire froze.
"What new doctor?"
Silence.
Elizabeth hesitated.
"The specialist."
Claire's skin prickled.
"What did Ryan tell you?"
Another silence.
Then Elizabeth said carefully, "Maybe you should ask him."
Claire looked toward the hallway.
Ryan was standing there.
Watching.
Claire forced a smile.
"I'll call you later, Mom."
She ended the call.
Ryan folded his arms.
"What did she say?"
Claire stared at him.
"Why does my mother think I have a specialist?"
Ryan responded instantly.
"She misunderstood."
"How does she know anything about a specialist?"
"I might have mentioned it."
Claire stepped closer.
"When?"
"I don't remember."
"Why?"
"Because she worries about you."
Claire's eyes narrowed.
"You asked her for money."
Ryan's face barely changed.
Barely.
That was enough.
"How much?"
"Claire."
"How much?"
"Nothing."
She knew he was lying.
Claire went to the bedroom and locked the door.
Then she called Elizabeth back.
This time she whispered.
"Mom, I need you to tell me exactly what Ryan said."
Elizabeth's breathing changed.
"He told me not to upset you."
"Tell me."
"He said insurance denied a specialist."
Claire closed her eyes.
"How much?"
Elizabeth did not answer.
"Mom."
"I gave him some money."
"How much?"
"Claire, are you safe?"
The question hit harder than the amount.
Claire looked at the locked door.
"How much?"
"Eighteen thousand dollars."
Claire sank onto the edge of the bed.
The room went silent.
Elizabeth continued speaking.
Claire heard almost none of it.
Eighteen thousand.
Ryan had already received eighteen thousand from her mother before Claire sold her grandmother's jewelry.
The betrayal was so large that for several seconds Claire could not feel it.
Then came rage.
Clean.
Sharp.
Awake.
"Do you still have proof?"
"Yes."
"Bring it."
"When?"
"Now."
Elizabeth's voice became firm.
"I'm leaving."
Claire ended the call.
When she unlocked the bedroom door, Ryan was standing on the other side.
He smiled.
"Everything okay?"
Claire looked directly into his eyes.
May you like
"Perfect."
For the first time, she lied better than he did.
