Chapter 13 - THE DAY THE STORY TURNED

Once the hard drive became evidence, Ryan's strategy collapsed.
Sponsors cut ties.
Fundraising platforms froze accounts.
Donors filed complaints.
The private membership group disappeared overnight.
Northline Digital shut down its public website.
Kevin Walsh stopped answering calls.
Diane posted a long statement saying she had been manipulated by her son.
Claire read three sentences and closed it.
"She is blaming him."
Hannah nodded.
"Expected."
"Will it work?"
"Not with the video call."
Claire almost smiled.
Diane had condemned herself with her own words.
Real reactions work better.
Ryan's attorney requested mediation.
Claire agreed only for property, not for truth.
The meeting lasted four hours.
Ryan appeared thinner.
He did not look at Claire at first.
When he finally did, his eyes filled with tears.
"Can I say something?"
Hannah started to object.
Claire raised a hand.
"Let him."
Ryan leaned forward.
"I'm sorry."
Claire waited.
He continued.
"I got obsessed."
"With money?"
"With fixing things."
Claire almost laughed.
"Fixing what?"
"Our future."
"You were planning a future with Megan."
Ryan closed his eyes.
"That wasn't simple."
"It looks simple."
"I was confused."
"You forged my signature."
"I was scared."
"You opened debt in my name."
"I planned to pay it back."
"You sold fake medical reports."
"I never thought it would get this big."
"You wrote the plan before the first livestream."
Ryan's face tightened.
Claire continued.
"You practiced hitting furniture."
He looked at the table.
"You measured how much money my crying made."
Silence.
"I need you to say it."
Ryan looked up.
"Say what?"
"That I didn't know."
His attorney whispered something.
Ryan hesitated.
Claire waited.
Finally he said, "You didn't know everything."
Claire's expression hardened.
"Everything?"
Ryan realized the trap.
She leaned forward.
"I did not know you told people my baby might die."
"No."
"I did not know you created fake medical documents."
"No."
"I did not know my mother gave you eighteen thousand dollars."
"No."
"I did not know about the private donations."
"No."
"I did not know you opened credit accounts in my name."
"No."
"I did not know you were paying Diane."
"No."
"I did not know you were planning to raise another one hundred fifty thousand around my daughter's birth."
Ryan's eyes filled.
"No."
Claire sat back.
"Thank you."
His attorney looked furious.
Ryan had just admitted almost everything.
The property settlement negotiations became simple after that.
Claire demanded the house be sold.
She did not want it.
Too many walls contained memories she no longer trusted.
Her share would go toward legitimate debts and rebuilding her credit.
She requested none of the disputed donation money for herself.
Any recoverable funds would be returned through claims processes or directed according to legal guidance.
Ryan tried to keep his truck.
Claire did not care.
He tried to protect a retirement account.
Claire did not care.
What she wanted was full responsibility for debts created without her authorization.
A clean financial separation.
And control over decisions involving the baby.
Ryan resisted the last part.
"I'm her father."
Claire stared at him.
"You used her heartbeat to sell a lie before she was even born."
The room went quiet.
Mediation ended.
Outside, Hannah asked Claire if she was all right.
Claire looked at the sky.
For months every decision had revolved around Ryan.
Would Ryan get angry?
Would Ryan post something?
Would Ryan take money?
Would Ryan lie?
That day Claire realized she had gone four hours without wondering what Ryan wanted.
She smiled for the first time.
"I think I'm getting there."
Then her phone rang.
Her obstetrician.
Claire answered.
The doctor told her to come to the hospital.
May you like
Her blood pressure was dangerously high.
The baby might need to be delivered early.
