Chapter 2 - The Key Margaret Forgot

Margaret moved toward the oak cabinet before Daniel could take another step.
“There is nothing in there that concerns you.”
Her voice was calm, but Daniel noticed the sudden stiffness in her shoulders.
For years, his mother had controlled every room she entered. She never rushed. She never raised her voice unless she wanted someone to feel small.
Now she was standing between him and a half-open cabinet.
That told him more than any explanation could.
Daniel kept one arm around Elena.
“What is inside?”
“Your father’s old business records.”
“My father has been dead for six years.”
“Exactly. They are irrelevant.”
Margaret reached for the key.
Daniel caught her wrist before her fingers touched it.
The foyer became silent.
Lucas stopped recording.
Margaret stared at Daniel’s hand as though he had committed an unforgivable crime.
“You are hurting me.”
Daniel released her immediately.
“I asked you a question.”
“And I answered.”
“No. You dismissed me.”
Elena gently touched his arm.
“Daniel, please. I don’t want you fighting because of me.”
He looked at her swollen eyes and bruised knees.
“This is not because of you.”
He turned back to his mother.
“This is because of what all of you have done.”
Lucas stepped forward.
“You don’t even know what happened.”
“I saw enough.”
“You walked in at the worst possible moment.”
Daniel stared at him.
“You were filming my pregnant wife while she washed Mother’s feet.”
Lucas gave a nervous shrug.
“She volunteered.”
Elena’s head snapped up.
“That is not true.”
Margaret’s expression hardened.
“Elena.”
For the first time, Elena did not lower her eyes.
Margaret appeared more shocked by that small act of defiance than by anything Daniel had said.
Elena’s voice trembled, but she continued.
“You told me Daniel would lose control of his company if I refused.”
Daniel slowly turned toward her.
“What?”
Elena’s lips parted, but no words came.
Margaret spoke quickly.
“She misunderstood.”
Elena shook her head.
“You showed me the documents.”
“What documents?” Daniel asked.
Margaret laughed without humor.
“Pregnancy has made your wife emotional.”
Daniel stepped around her and opened the cabinet.
Inside were dozens of files arranged with unnatural precision. Some bore the Morrison family crest. Others carried the names of holding companies Daniel recognized from the family corporation.
One black folder had been placed carelessly on top.
Daniel pulled it out.
Margaret reached for it.
“Put that back.”
Daniel opened the folder.
The first pages contained ordinary financial summaries.
Property taxes.
Insurance payments.
Maintenance expenses.
Then he found a series of transfers.
Each month, large sums had been moved from a trust account belonging to Morrison Holdings.
The recipient was a company called Ashcroft Consulting.
Daniel frowned.
He had never heard of it.
He turned another page.
The payments stretched back nearly seven years.
Some were small enough to escape notice.
Others were enormous.
One transfer made three weeks earlier was for nine hundred thousand dollars.
Daniel’s expression turned cold.
“So... it was you.”
Margaret said nothing.
He held the page higher.
“You approved these transfers.”
“My signature is on many documents.”
“This account required two authorizations.”
Daniel scanned the page again.
His own digital signature appeared beside Margaret’s.
He stared at it.
“I never signed this.”
Lucas looked away.
Daniel noticed.
“You knew.”
Lucas immediately shook his head.
“No.”
“You looked away before I finished speaking.”
“That doesn’t mean anything.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“Who forged my authorization?”
Margaret folded her arms.
“You are embarrassing yourself.”
“No, Mother. I am finally asking questions.”
Elena stared at the papers.
“That name.”
Daniel turned to her.
“You recognize it?”
She nodded slowly.
“Your mother mentioned Ashcroft Consulting last week. She said they had enough influence to remove you as chief executive.”
Margaret’s face tightened.
“I was trying to protect this family.”
“By threatening my wife?”
“By teaching her discretion.”
Daniel closed the folder.
“Who owns Ashcroft Consulting?”
No one answered.
He took out his phone.
Margaret’s calm finally broke.
“Do not call anyone.”
Daniel stopped.
“Why?”
“Because you do not understand what you are looking at.”
“Then explain it.”
“I can’t.”
“Or you won’t?”
Margaret glanced toward Lucas.
It was quick.
Barely noticeable.
But Daniel saw it.
So did Elena.
Lucas backed away.
Daniel looked between them.
“What did you do?”
Lucas’s phone suddenly rang.
The sound echoed through the foyer.
He glanced at the screen and went pale.
Daniel held out his hand.
“Give it to me.”
Lucas rejected the call.
“No.”
The phone rang again.
May you like
This time, the caller’s name appeared clearly.
Ashcroft.
