Chapter 15 - The Door Beneath the Nursery

Margaret was taken into custody.
Adrian remained in surgery.
Nathan agreed to speak with federal investigators, but only after the ledger was recovered.
Lucas returned to the mansion with Daniel and Elena.
No one spoke during the drive.
The house looked different when they arrived.
The marble floors no longer represented success.
The crystal chandeliers no longer represented beauty.
Every room felt like a monument to carefully preserved lies.
Nathan entered last.
He stopped beneath an old family portrait of Charles and Margaret.
“You built this entire place around a secret,” he said.
Daniel looked at him.
“You said the ledger was beneath the home Father left to his firstborn.”
Nathan nodded.
“Charles did not mean you.”
Lucas gave a bitter laugh.
“That is not surprising.”
Nathan looked at him.
“He did not mean Elena either.”
Daniel frowned.
“Then who?”
Nathan walked toward the nursery.
Elena followed.
The room had been prepared for the baby with pale walls, a white crib and shelves filled with children’s books.
Nathan stood in the center.
“This was once Charles’s private bedroom.”
Daniel shook his head.
“The mansion was rebuilt before I was born.”
“The upper floors were rebuilt. The foundations were not.”
Nathan moved the rug beneath the crib.
A faint rectangular outline appeared in the wooden floor.
Lucas knelt and examined it.
“There is no handle.”
Nathan took Charles’s silver watch.
He turned the crown three times and pressed it against a tiny indentation.
A lock clicked beneath the floor.
Daniel and Lucas moved the crib aside.
Together, they lifted a hidden door.
A narrow staircase descended into darkness.
Cold air rose from below.
Elena touched Daniel’s arm.
“The garage.”
Nathan nodded.
“The first Morrison and Ashcroft office.”
They descended carefully.
The underground room had remained sealed for decades.
A workbench stood against one wall.
Old company sketches covered another.
Two desks sat side by side.
One belonged to Charles.
The other to Nathan.
Elena touched the dust-covered nameplate bearing her father’s name.
Nathan searched beneath the workbench.
The hidden compartment was empty.
His expression changed.
“No.”
Daniel looked inside.
Only a torn piece of fabric remained.
Someone had already taken the ledger.
Lucas found footprints in the dust.
“They are fresh.”
Daniel followed the tracks toward the far wall.
They ended at a metal door hidden behind shelves.
The door opened into a tunnel.
Nathan looked stunned.
“That was not here before.”
A light appeared in the distance.
Someone was moving away from them.
Daniel ran into the tunnel.
Lucas followed.
Elena and Nathan remained near the entrance.
The passage extended beneath the east garden and ended inside a small stone building Daniel believed had always been an unused greenhouse.
When Daniel emerged, the intruder was already climbing into a car.
Lucas reached the vehicle first and pulled open the passenger door.
The driver accelerated.
Lucas fell onto the gravel.
Daniel caught a glimpse of the person in the back seat.
A woman.
She held a thick leather ledger against her chest.
Her face was hidden beneath a scarf, but one detail was unmistakable.
She wore Margaret’s pearl necklace.
The vehicle vanished through the service gate.
Daniel helped Lucas stand.
“Did you see her?”
Lucas nodded.
“That wasn’t Mother.”
Nathan and Elena reached them moments later.
Nathan stared at the tire tracks.
His face became pale.
“What did she look like?”
Daniel described the scarf, the dark coat and the necklace.
Nathan closed his eyes.
“That is impossible.”
Elena stepped closer.
“Who was she?”
Nathan looked toward the empty road.
“Evelyn.”
Elena’s half brother’s mother.
The woman whose name controlled the company holding eighty million dollars.
The woman everyone believed had died eighteen years earlier.
Richard called Daniel before anyone could speak again.
His voice was urgent.
“Daniel, Margaret’s transport vehicle was attacked.”
Daniel gripped the phone.
“Is she alive?”
“Yes. But she is gone.”
“Who took her?”
“We don’t know.”
Daniel looked toward the road where Evelyn had disappeared.
Richard continued.
“There is something else. Before the attack, Margaret gave the officer a message for you.”
“What message?”
Richard paused.
“She said Nathan Ashcroft is not Elena’s father.”
Daniel slowly turned toward Nathan.
Nathan’s face revealed nothing.
Elena stopped beside him.
“What did she say after that?”
Richard answered quietly.
“She said the proof is written on the final page of the ledger.”
Behind them, a hidden telephone began ringing inside the underground room.
No wires connected the room to the mansion.
No one should have known they were there.
They returned to the old office.
The telephone continued ringing on Charles’s desk.
Daniel picked it up.
A woman spoke on the other end.
Her voice was calm and familiar.
“You have been looking for the wrong father.”
Elena moved closer, trying to hear.
Daniel tightened his grip on the receiver.
“Who are you?”
The woman laughed softly.
“Ask Nathan what happened to the first Morrison child.”
Nathan’s face turned white.
The line went dead.
Above them, footsteps crossed the nursery floor.
Someone had entered the mansion.
Then the hidden door slammed shut.
May you like
A lock clicked above their heads.
And from the darkness at the end of the underground room came the sound of a child crying.
