Chapter 1 - The Woman at the Silver Basin

The Morrison mansion had always been a symbol of perfection.
Every polished marble floor reflected wealth.
Every crystal chandelier reflected power.
Every family portrait hanging on the walls reflected a lie.
At least, that was how Daniel would remember it later.
That afternoon, he had returned home three hours earlier than expected.
His international business meeting had been canceled because of a severe storm, and instead of informing anyone, he decided to surprise his wife.
Elena was eight months pregnant.
She had complained about swollen feet during their video call the previous evening.
Daniel wanted to bring home her favorite strawberry cheesecake.
He imagined finding her resting in the garden or reading in the nursery they had spent months preparing for their first child.
Instead...
He walked into silence.
The mansion felt strangely empty.
No music.
No laughter.
No television.
Only the faint sound of splashing water.
He followed the sound across the entrance hall.
Each step made him increasingly uneasy.
The voices became clearer.
"Lower your head."
A woman's cold voice.
"Don't drip water on my dress."
Another splash.
Then...
A quiet sob.
Daniel froze before turning the corner.
His body refused to move.
His mind refused to understand.
His wife knelt on the polished marble floor beside an antique silver basin.
Her beautiful maternity dress was soaked.
Her knees were red against the hard floor.
Her trembling hands gently washed his mother's feet.
Tears streamed silently down her cheeks.
Across from her sat Margaret Morrison.
Perfect posture.
Perfect hairstyle.
Perfect pearl necklace.
She sipped tea while looking down at Elena as though she were nothing more than household furniture.
"Scrub harder."
Elena's fingers shook.
"Yes..."
Margaret frowned.
"Louder."
"Yes, Mother."
Daniel had never heard his wife sound so defeated.
His heart began pounding.
Not from anger.
From disbelief.
How long had this been happening?
Behind a nearby column stood Lucas.
Margaret's youngest son.
Daniel's younger brother.
He held his phone horizontally.
Recording everything.
Occasionally laughing under his breath.
"Oh, this is priceless."
Elena lowered her head even farther.
She knew someone was filming.
She simply no longer had the strength to protest.
Lucas zoomed in on her tear-filled face.
"Mom, smile."
Margaret actually smiled.
"There."
He chuckled.
"Family memories."
Daniel's fists slowly tightened.
His nails dug into his palms until they almost bled.
Still...
He said nothing.
He wanted to believe there had to be an explanation.
Some misunderstanding.
Some bizarre tradition.
Anything.
Then Margaret spoke again.
"This house belongs to my children."
She leaned closer to Elena.
"You are only here because my son pitied you."
Every word landed like a knife.
Elena quietly whispered,
"I understand."
"No."
Margaret shook her head.
"I don't think you do."
She lifted one wet foot.
Placed it directly onto Elena's shoulder.
"Hold it."
Elena obeyed.
Her entire body trembled beneath the weight.
Lucas laughed harder.
"Daniel really married someone obedient."
Margaret smirked.
"She's finally learning."
Daniel could not breathe.
Images flooded his memory.
The first day he met Elena.
Her shy smile.
The way she laughed whenever it rained.
The nights she stayed awake while he worked.
The countless times she insisted everything was fine.
The bruises she claimed came from slipping in the bathroom.
The tears she blamed on pregnancy hormones.
He had believed every lie.
Because he trusted his family.
Now...
He realized she had been protecting him.
Protecting his relationship with the people hurting her.
A quiet sob escaped Elena.
She shifted slightly.
Her swollen ankle gave out.
The silver basin tipped.
Water splashed across the marble floor.
Margaret's expression darkened.
"You useless girl."
She suddenly raised her hand.
Without thinking—
Daniel moved.
The sharp sound of footsteps echoed through the foyer.
Everyone turned.
Lucas nearly dropped his phone.
"D... Daniel?"
Margaret blinked once.
Then smiled calmly.
"Oh."
"You came home early."
Daniel ignored her.
He walked straight toward Elena.
She looked up.
Her eyes widened.
For one brief moment...
Relief replaced despair.
He gently removed Margaret's foot from Elena's shoulder.
Neither forcefully nor dramatically.
Simply...
Firmly.
Then he knelt beside his wife.
"Can you stand?"
She hesitated.
"I..."
He offered both hands.
"You'll never kneel for anyone again."
The sentence was quiet.
Almost whispered.
But everyone heard it.
Elena burst into tears.
Daniel carefully helped her stand.
One arm supported her back.
The other rested protectively beneath her baby bump.
Lucas lowered his phone.
"Bro... you're making this look worse than it is."
Daniel looked at him.
"Delete it."
Lucas laughed nervously.
"It's just a joke."
"I said..."
Daniel's voice became frighteningly calm.
"Delete it."
Lucas swallowed.
Margaret stood.
"Enough."
She adjusted her elegant jacket.
"You don't speak to your brother like that."
Daniel turned toward her.
His expression had completely changed.
He no longer looked like a son.
He looked like a stranger.
"My wife."
He paused.
"Pack a bag."
Elena stared at him.
"What?"
"We're leaving."
Margaret laughed.
Actually laughed.
"You'll come crawling back by tomorrow."
Daniel didn't answer.
Instead...
He looked toward the old oak cabinet in the corner of the foyer.
His father had always kept important family documents inside.
Something caught his attention.
The cabinet door wasn't fully closed.
A tiny metal key still hung from the lock.
Margaret noticed his gaze.
For the first time that afternoon...

Her smile disappeared.
