Chapter 14 - The Bridge Where Nathan Fell

The police refused to exchange Margaret for Lucas.

Margaret refused to go voluntarily.

Daniel stood in the factory office while officers argued over strategy.

On the laptop, the live video had ended.

The final image showed Lucas unconscious but alive.

Daniel faced his mother.

“You are coming with me.”

“No.”

“Lucas is your son.”

“He created this problem.”

“He may die.”

Margaret looked at him with disturbing calm.

“Then Adrian will become a murderer, and the police will solve two problems at once.”

Daniel stared at her.

“You feel nothing.”

“I feel more than you understand.”

“No. You fear losing control more than losing your child.”

Margaret slapped him.

Daniel did not react.

She lowered her hand slowly.

For the first time, shame flickered across her face.

Elena entered the office.

“I will go.”

Daniel turned.

“No.”

“If Nathan sees me, he may release Lucas.”

Margaret laughed.

“Nathan does not want a daughter. He wants revenge.”

“You do not know what he wants.”

“I knew him before you were born.”

Elena stepped closer.

“And you have been afraid of him ever since.”

Margaret’s eyes hardened.

Elena continued.

“That is why you tried to make me leave Daniel. Not because you believed I was after money. Because my existence reminded everyone Nathan had a rightful heir.”

Margaret looked away.

Daniel saw the truth.

“You knew Elena and I were not related.”

“Of course.”

“You let us believe it for even a second.”

“I needed you to doubt her.”

Daniel’s disgust was immediate.

Margaret picked up her coat.

“Fine. I will go to the bridge.”

The police attached a tracking device beneath her collar.

A tactical team followed at a distance.

Daniel drove.

Elena sat beside him.

Margaret occupied the back seat, separated by a metal barrier installed in the police vehicle.

The old river bridge appeared through the morning fog.

A single lantern burned at the center.

Lucas sat tied beside the railing.

Adrian stood behind him.

Next to Adrian was an older man wearing a dark coat.

Nathan Ashcroft.

Elena stopped breathing.

He was alive.

Older than the photographs.

Scarred.

But unmistakably alive.

Nathan stared at Elena.

His face collapsed with emotion.

“Anna?”

Elena stepped forward.

“No. I’m Elena.”

Nathan’s eyes filled with tears.

“My daughter.”

Margaret emerged from the vehicle.

Nathan’s grief disappeared.

“You.”

Margaret stood beneath the lantern.

“You survived.”

“Not because you allowed it.”

Lucas struggled against the ropes.

“Daniel, don’t trust them.”

Adrian struck the back of the chair.

“Be quiet.”

Nathan looked at his son.

“Do not touch him.”

Adrian stepped away.

Daniel noticed tension between them.

This was not a united family.

Nathan turned to Margaret.

“Where is the ledger?”

“I don’t have it.”

“You built your mansion over the garage because you thought the foundation would bury it forever.”

Margaret smiled.

“If the ledger still existed, I would have found it.”

Nathan pointed toward Charles’s watch in Daniel’s hand.

“The coordinates are inside.”

Daniel opened the back.

Beneath the memory card was a tiny engraved sequence.

Nathan continued.

“Charles hid the ledger after he discovered Margaret’s first theft.”

“Why not expose her?” Daniel asked.

“Because by then, she was pregnant with you.”

Daniel looked at his mother.

Nathan’s voice softened.

“Charles thought protecting your future mattered more than justice.”

Margaret said,

“And he was right.”

Nathan laughed.

“No. He created a woman who believed motherhood excused everything.”

A sniper’s laser briefly crossed Adrian’s chest.

Nathan noticed.

“Tell the police to lower their weapons.”

Daniel spoke into the hidden microphone.

The tactical leader ordered everyone to hold fire.

Nathan cut Lucas free.

Lucas ran toward Daniel.

Adrian raised his gun.

Nathan stepped between them.

“Enough.”

Adrian stared at his father.

“You promised she would pay.”

“She will.”

“You promised the company would become ours.”

“It belongs to Elena.”

Adrian’s face twisted.

“I spent twenty years searching for you.”

Nathan looked at him sadly.

“And you found me only after you learned about the trust.”

Adrian aimed the gun at Elena.

Daniel moved in front of her.

Nathan shouted his son’s name.

Margaret suddenly pulled the tracking device from her collar and threw it into the river.

Then she reached inside her coat.

Daniel saw the gun too late.

A shot rang across the bridge.

Adrian fell.

His weapon slid across the road.

Nathan dropped to his knees beside him.

Margaret stood holding the smoking pistol.

Police rushed from both sides.

She raised her hands calmly.

“I saved Elena’s life.”

Nathan looked up at her.

Pure hatred filled his face.

“You always make murder look like protection.”

Adrian coughed.

Blood spread beneath him.

He grabbed Nathan’s sleeve.

“The ledger…”

Nathan leaned closer.

Adrian whispered something no one else could hear.

Then his hand fell.

Paramedics carried him away, barely alive.

As police placed Margaret in handcuffs, she looked at Daniel.

“You will thank me when you learn what Adrian planned.”

Daniel did not answer.

Nathan approached Elena.

She did not know whether to embrace him or step away.

He stopped several feet from her.

“I know I have no right to ask for forgiveness.”

“You had thirty years to find me.”

“I was told you died with your mother.”

Elena looked at Margaret.

Margaret said nothing.

Nathan continued.

“When I learned you were alive, you had already married Daniel. I thought entering your life would destroy it.”

“It was already being destroyed.”

Nathan lowered his head.

“I know.”

Daniel held up the silver watch.

“Where is the ledger?”

Nathan looked toward the eastern sky.

“Under your home.”

Daniel frowned.

“The mansion?”

“No.”

May you like

Nathan looked at Elena.

“The home Charles left to his true firstborn.”
