Chapter 7 - Rachel's Last Drive)

Police arrived twenty minutes later.

Dr. Keene denied everything.

He called Rachel's files fabricated.

He claimed he had never met Victor outside hospital charity events.

He insisted the security restriction had entered the system automatically.

Then investigators checked his administrative login.

The restriction had been approved from his account at 12:43 that afternoon.

Keene claimed his credentials had been stolen.

Owen produced internal access logs.

Keene's identification badge had entered his private office at 12:39.

He still denied involvement.

Without a warrant or more direct evidence, police would not arrest him.

Jack understood.

Rachel had warned him about this.

Paper could be manufactured.

Records manipulated.

Victor's entire strategy depended on creating enough uncertainty that truth became just another version of events.

Jack left the hospital at 9:10 that night with Ellie still under observation.

Margaret stayed with her.

Owen arranged for a security officer outside the room.

Jack drove north.

Claire Bennett sat in the passenger seat.

"You don't have to come," Jack said.

"Yes, I do."

"This isn't your case anymore."

"The moment someone forged a family court order using a dead man's identity, it became my case."

Jack glanced at her.

She continued.

"And if Rachel's original ledger proves what we think it proves, Victor won't just lose custody leverage. He could face federal charges."

They drove through increasing rain.

The weather made Jack think of Rachel's accident.

He hated that.

Lake Harrison was two hours from the city.

The cabin had belonged to Jack's father, who died four years before Rachel.

Jack had not visited since.

At 11:27, they pulled onto the gravel road.

The cabin appeared between dark pine trees.

One window was broken.

Jack stopped the car.

"Someone's been here."

Claire reached for her phone.

"No signal."

Jack looked at the muddy ground.

Fresh tire tracks.

They entered carefully.

The front room had been torn apart.

Cushions ripped open.

Cabinets emptied.

Books scattered.

Someone had searched everything.

Claire looked around.

"Victor beat us here."

Jack walked toward the fireplace.

Where had Rachel hidden things when they stayed here?

Then he remembered.

On their wedding night, the power had failed again during a storm.

Rachel had found an old wooden box beneath a loose floorboard.

They had joked about leaving a time capsule.

Jack crossed the room.

He moved the rug.

One floorboard near the fireplace showed fresh scratches.

His heart sank.

He pulled it up.

The space beneath was empty.

Claire exhaled.

"We're too late."

Jack stared into the darkness.

Then he noticed something carved into the underside of the board.

R and J.

Rachel and Jack.

A small arrow pointed toward the fireplace.

Jack looked up.

"Rachel knew someone might find the obvious hiding place."

Inside the fireplace was an old iron plate.

Jack removed it.

Behind it was a narrow cavity.

Inside sat a metal document case.

Claire smiled.

"Your wife was good."

"She was better than all of us."

The case contained a paper ledger.

Not copies.

Original signatures.

Original account numbers.

Original authorization codes.

And one additional envelope.

Jack opened it.

Inside was a copy of Rachel's vehicle inspection from two days before her death.

Brake system inspected.

No defects.

Attached was a photograph taken after her crash.

A handwritten note read:

Rear brake line showed evidence of deliberate damage. Officer reporting discrepancy: Detective Paul Mercer.

Jack went cold.

The official accident report said mechanical failure had not contributed.

Claire read over his shoulder.

"Who is Paul Mercer?"

"I don't know."

A sound came from outside.

Gravel.

A vehicle.

Jack moved toward the window.

Headlights swept across the cabin.

A black SUV stopped outside.

Two men got out.

One was Victor.

The other was Caleb Rusk.

Claire whispered, "They knew we'd come."

Jack looked at the metal case.

"No."

He remembered the hospital.

The files.

The people watching.

"They followed us."

Victor walked toward the front door without hurry.

As if he already owned whatever was inside.

Then his voice came through the wood.

"Jack."

Jack said nothing.

Victor continued.

"I know you found Rachel's box."

Claire started dialing emergency services despite the weak signal.

Victor called again.

"Open the door."

Jack stared at the man-shaped shadow through the curtain.

"What do you want?"

Victor's answer was quiet.

"The same thing Rachel refused to give me."

May you like

A pause.

"The truth buried."
