Chapter 6 - The Name on Rachel's List)

The final name was Dr. Samuel Keene.

Chief administrative officer of St. Matthew's Medical Center.

Dr. Collins stared at the screen.

"That's impossible."

Jack looked at her.

"Why?"

"Because Dr. Keene authorized our emergency custody verification system."

Owen swore under his breath.

Claire Bennett immediately closed the office door.

"Nobody contacts him."

Dr. Collins looked stunned.

"I've worked with Sam for eleven years."

Jack pointed at Rachel's message.

"My wife died after writing his name down."

Dr. Collins said nothing.

Rachel's list contained six names.

Victor Hale.

Caleb Rusk.

Samuel Keene.

Gerald Knox.

Martin Voss.

Elaine Turner.

Beside each was a short notation.

Victor: controls accounts.

Caleb: courier and intimidation.

Keene: medical access and records.

Knox: original Marcus Vale partner.

Voss: legal filings.

Turner: financial authorization.

Claire leaned toward the screen.

"Martin Voss is the attorney who submitted the fake order."

Owen looked at her.

"You're sure?"

"I've seen his signature."

Jack remembered the attorney who had arrived downstairs.

"Was Voss the man who came here?"

Owen checked the security photograph.

Claire nodded.

"Yes."

The circle tightened.

Dr. Collins looked sick.

"If Keene is involved, he could change records from inside the hospital."

"Or create restrictions," Owen said.

Jack turned toward Ellie's room.

"Could he move her?"

Dr. Collins immediately shook her head.

"Not now."

"You said not now."

"I'm moving her to a secure room under my direct supervision."

Claire pointed toward the micro card.

"We need those files decrypted."

Rachel's message included instructions.

The password required two parts.

Something Jack knew.

Something Ellie knew.

First question:

Where did Jack ask Rachel to marry him?

Jack answered aloud.

"Lake Harrison."

Second question:

What did Ellie call the moon when she was four?

Jack looked toward his daughter.

Ellie thought for a moment.

"Night cookie."

The files unlocked.

Jack laughed softly.

Rachel had built the password from moments Victor could never steal.

The first files were financial records.

The second contained photographs of forged documents.

The third included audio recordings.

Jack opened one.

Victor's voice filled the room.

"You don't understand what happens if these accounts are exposed."

Rachel answered.

"I understand exactly what happens."

"You'll destroy this family."

"No. You did that."

Another male voice entered.

"Rachel, we can resolve this."

Claire pointed at the speaker.

"Martin Voss."

Victor continued.

"You have a daughter now. Think carefully."

The recording ended.

Jack's face went still.

Margaret covered her mouth.

Ellie could not hear the audio from her secure room, and Jack was grateful.

He opened another file.

Rachel was speaking alone.

"If anything happens to me, the original financial ledger is stored where Victor cannot reach it."

A pause.

"The bracelet contains access, not the ledger."

Jack leaned closer.

"To find the original, Jack needs to remember where we spent our first night as a married couple."

Jack frowned.

Margaret looked at him.

"Where?"

He almost laughed.

"Not what you're thinking."

After their wedding reception, their hotel had suffered a power outage.

Rachel had hated the dark elevators.

So instead of staying, they drove three hours north to a cabin owned by Jack's father.

An old fishing cabin beside Lake Harrison.

The same place where he had proposed.

Jack looked at Claire.

"The ledger is at Lake Harrison."

Then the office door opened.

Everyone turned.

Dr. Samuel Keene stood there.

He looked at the computer.

Then at Jack.

For a second, surprise crossed his face.

Then it disappeared.

"Mr. Sullivan," he said calmly. "I understand there has been a serious misunderstanding."

No one answered.

Keene smiled.

"I think I can help resolve it."

Owen subtly moved between Keene and the computer.

Jack studied the doctor.

Rachel had written his name before she died.

A man trusted by an entire hospital.

A man who now knew Jack had found something.

Keene looked around the room.

"Where is your daughter?"

Jack smiled without warmth.

May you like

"Somewhere you can't reach her."

For the first time, Dr. Keene stopped smiling.
