Chapter 5 - The Man in Scrubs)

Security footage showed the man entering through a loading corridor.
He wore blue scrubs, a surgical mask, and a stolen staff badge.
He never showed his full face to the cameras.
He entered Ellie's room for eleven seconds.
A nurse interrupted him before he reached the bed.
He fled down a service stairwell.
Jack watched the footage in Owen's office after returning from the bank.
"Victor?"
Owen shook his head.
"Wrong build."
"Then he has someone working for him."
Dr. Collins stood beside the monitor.
"What would they want from Ellie?"
Jack told them about Rachel's bracelet.
Dr. Collins looked toward the screen.
"Ellie said someone checked her wrists before leaving."
Jack's jaw tightened.
"They were looking for it."
Owen rewound the footage.
At one point, the intruder turned.
A tattoo appeared briefly above his wrist.
Margaret leaned closer.
"I've seen that."
Jack looked at her.
"Where?"
"Victor's driver."
"Name?"
"Caleb Rusk."
Owen sent the image to hospital security and local police.
Then Jack called Principal Morris.
"Did Victor personally come to the school?"
"No."
"Was there a man with him?"
The principal hesitated.
"There was a driver waiting outside."
"Did you see his wrist?"
Silence.
Then she whispered, "There was a tattoo."
Jack shut his eyes.
It was connected.
All of it.
The cookie.
The fake custody documents.
The hospital intruder.
Before Jack could ask another question, Owen's desk phone rang.
He answered.
His expression changed.
"Send her in."
A woman entered carrying a leather briefcase.
She introduced herself as Claire Bennett, an attorney with the county family court emergency review office.
"The hospital contacted us regarding a questionable emergency custody order."
Jack stood.
"Is it fake?"
Claire placed the document on Owen's desk.
"The case number is real."
Jack's heart sank.
"But the order isn't."
Everyone stared at her.
She continued.
"The case number belongs to a guardianship matter from 2019 involving an unrelated family."
"How does someone get a fake order into the hospital system?"
"That's what I intend to find out."
Jack pointed at his photograph.
"And this?"
"Identity fraud."
"Can you clear the restriction?"
"I already have."
Jack turned toward Dr. Collins.
"Can I see my daughter now?"
She smiled for the first time.
"Yes."
Jack did not walk to Ellie's room.
He ran.
She looked impossibly small beneath the white blanket.
An oxygen tube rested under her nose.
Her light-brown hair spread across the pillow.
When she saw him, her face crumpled.
"Daddy."
Jack reached her in three steps.
He bent over the bed and held her carefully.
"I'm here."
She wrapped both arms around his neck.
"I knew you would come."
"Always."
Margaret stood in the doorway, crying.
Jack sat beside Ellie.
"You scared me."
"I scared me too."
He kissed her forehead.
Then his voice became serious.
"Ellie, I need to ask about Mommy's bracelet."
Ellie looked toward the doorway.
"Is Uncle Victor here?"
"No."
"Promise?"
"I promise."
She slowly relaxed.
"At school, he came into the office."
"Victor?"
She nodded.
"He said Grandma asked him to pick me up."
Margaret stepped forward.
"I never did."
"I know now."
Ellie looked at Jack.
"He asked to see Mommy's bracelet."
"What did you do?"
"I told him no."
A tiny spark of pride entered her face.
"He got mad."
Jack kept his tone gentle.
"Did he touch you?"
"No. He just grabbed the bracelet."
"Then how did you switch the moon charm?"
Ellie looked almost offended.
"Mommy taught me."
Jack smiled despite himself.
"Of course she did."
Ellie reached beneath her pillow.
Everyone in the room stiffened.
She pulled out a small plastic hospital cup.
Inside was a silver charm shaped like a moon.
Jack stared.
"You had it here?"
She nodded.
"When the ambulance came, I put it in my sock."
Margaret laughed through tears.
Jack picked up the charm.
It was heavier than it looked.
There was a tiny seam along one side.
Dr. Collins brought him a small instrument.
Jack opened it.
Inside was a micro memory card.
Ellie smiled.
"Where stories sleep."
Jack kissed her forehead again.
"You remembered."
"Mommy said stories are safer when bad people don't know the ending."
Jack looked at the tiny card in his palm.
Victor Hale had spent eighteen months trying to control the ending.
Now Rachel had given them a chance to rewrite it.
But when Owen inserted the card into an isolated hospital computer, one folder appeared.
It contained forty-seven encrypted files.
And one unencrypted message.
Jack opened it.
Three words appeared.
TRUST NO ONE.

Then a list of names loaded beneath it.
The final name on the list belonged to someone standing inside the hospital.
