Chapter 4 - Where Stories Sleep)

Jack wanted to go straight home.
Margaret insisted they visit the bank first.
"If Victor knows about Rachel's bracelet, he may know about the safe deposit box."
Jack checked the time.
The bank closed in thirty-eight minutes.
They arrived with twelve minutes left.
The brass key belonged to Box 417.
The bank manager examined Rachel's letter, Jack's identification, and documentation naming him executor of Rachel's estate.
Because the box had been registered jointly to Rachel and Jack, access was granted.
Jack had never known it existed.
Inside Box 417 sat a black folder, a flash drive, two notarized affidavits, and a second letter.
Jack opened the folder.
Bank statements.
Millions moving through companies he had never heard of.
Vale Educational Consulting.
MV Children's Services.
North Harbor Development.
All connected through Victor.
One document made Jack's stomach twist.
A trust established for Eleanor Grace Sullivan.
Current value: 11.8 million dollars.
Jack looked at Margaret.
"What is this?"
She shook her head.
"Rachel never told me."
According to the documents, Charles Hale had established the trust for Ellie shortly before his death.
Rachel was the primary trustee.
If Rachel died, control transferred temporarily to an independent fiduciary.
But another clause had been attached later.
If Ellie's surviving parent became legally incapacitated, imprisoned, missing, or subject to a substantiated child protection order, administration shifted to the Hale Family Foundation.
Victor controlled the foundation.
Jack understood immediately.
"He doesn't need Ellie."
Margaret stared at the document.
"He needs me disqualified."
"And legal control over her."
Jack picked up the affidavit.
Rachel had signed it six weeks before her death.
I believe my brother Victor Hale has created false identities and fraudulent financial records for the purpose of diverting funds from family trusts.
If anything happens to me, I request that all records involving the identity Marcus Vale be examined.
Jack's chest tightened.
She had known.
Rachel had known enough to be afraid.
The bank manager returned carrying a small sealed evidence pouch.
"This was also attached to the box."
Inside was an old mobile phone.
Jack powered it on.
Battery nearly dead.
No password.
Only one video file.
Rachel appeared on screen.
Jack nearly dropped the phone.
She was sitting in her car.
Alive.
Her hair tucked behind one ear.
The tiny crease between her eyebrows visible when she was worried.
Jack had not heard her voice in eighteen months.
"If you're watching this," Rachel said, "then something happened that I couldn't stop."
Jack sank into the chair.
Margaret began crying silently.
Rachel continued.
"Jack, I'm sorry."
He swallowed hard.
"I should have told you. I kept thinking I needed one more document. One more account. One more piece of proof."
Rachel looked down.
"Victor created Marcus Vale years ago with another man named Gerald Knox. Marcus was real once. After Marcus died, Victor kept the identity alive. Loans, companies, property, legal filings. I think he has people helping him inside law firms and financial offices."
She leaned closer to the camera.
"If he ever uses Marcus Vale against you, he's trying to make you disappear without physically hurting you. He will turn you into someone the law doesn't recognize."
Jack stared at the screen.
Rachel's eyes filled with tears.
"Do not fight him the way he wants you to."
Jack remembered Owen's collar in his fist.
Rachel continued.
"He'll try to make you angry. He'll try to make you look dangerous. Don't give him that."
Jack closed his eyes.
It was as though she had reached across eighteen months to stop him.
Then Rachel said something else.
"The real evidence is not in this box."
Jack looked up.
"I couldn't risk keeping it all in one place."
She held up her silver charm bracelet.
"I stored the access token inside the moon charm."
Jack and Margaret looked at each other.
Victor had taken the bracelet from Ellie.
Rachel smiled sadly into the camera.
"But Ellie knows our hiding game."
Jack immediately called Owen.
"Has Victor Hale entered the hospital?"
"Not that we know of."
"Don't let him near Ellie."
"We won't."
"I need someone sent to my house."
"Why?"
Jack picked up the flash drive.
"Because my daughter may have hidden something there."
Owen hesitated.
"Jack, I need to tell you something."
"What?"
"The attorney downstairs isn't here anymore."
Jack stood.
"Where did he go?"
"We're checking cameras."
Then another voice came through the line.
Dr. Collins.
"Jack?"
"What happened?"
"Ellie's room was entered six minutes ago by someone wearing hospital scrubs."
Jack's blood went cold.
"Was she hurt?"
"No. A nurse interrupted him."
"Who was he?"
"We don't know."
Owen returned to the phone.
"But he left something behind."
"What?"
"A visitor badge."
Jack waited.

Owen's voice hardened.
"The name printed on it is Marcus Vale."
