Chapter 2 - The Dead Man's Name)

After Dr. Maya Collins called Jack by the name Marcus Vale, the hospital placed everyone in a private consultation room.

Jack refused to sit.

Owen stood by the door.

Margaret sat with both hands clasped in her lap.

Dr. Collins placed the tablet on the table.

"I want to make one thing clear," she said. "Ellie is stable."

Jack finally breathed.

"Can I see her?"

"Not yet."

His relief vanished.

Dr. Collins continued.

"She had a severe allergic reaction. The emergency team treated her quickly. Her breathing has improved, but she is still being monitored."

"Then why am I not allowed in?"

"Because the records accompanying her include an emergency family court order."

"Fake."

"We haven't determined that."

"I have full custody of my daughter."

Jack pulled out his phone.

"I can show you her birth certificate. School records. Insurance. Everything."

Owen spoke quietly.

"The documents we received include those things too."

Jack looked at him.

"What?"

"With different information."

Dr. Collins turned the tablet around.

The screen showed a scanned court order.

Minor Child: Eleanor Grace Sullivan.

Temporary Legal Guardian: Marcus Jonathan Vale.

Restricted Individual: Jack Daniel Sullivan.

Jack read it twice.

Then again.

The words refused to make sense.

"This is insane."

Dr. Collins swiped to another page.

Marcus Vale's identification appeared.

Jack's photograph.

A different birth date.

A different address.

A signature that looked disturbingly similar to Jack's.

Jack turned toward Margaret.

"Who is he?"

Margaret began crying.

"Tell me."

"I wanted Rachel to tell you."

The sound of his wife's name struck him like a blow.

Rachel had been dead for eighteen months.

A rainy highway.

A crushed passenger side.

A police officer standing at Jack's front door at 2:11 in the morning.

Jack had spent a year teaching himself how to wake up without reaching for her.

"What does Rachel have to do with this?"

Margaret closed her eyes.

"About three weeks before the accident, she came to my house."

Jack said nothing.

"She was terrified."

"Of what?"

"Her brother."

Jack frowned.

"Victor?"

Margaret nodded.

Victor Hale was Rachel's older half-brother.

Forty-four years old.

Wealthy.

Polished.

The kind of man whose photograph appeared in charity magazines beside oversized checks.

After Rachel died, Victor had paid for the funeral.

He had offered to pay Ellie's school tuition.

Jack had refused both.

"What did Victor do?"

Margaret wiped her eyes.

"Rachel said she discovered something involving family trusts. She wouldn't give me details. She only said Victor had been moving money that wasn't his."

Jack stared.

"Why didn't she tell me?"

"She planned to."

"When?"

"That weekend."

Rachel died on Friday night.

Jack looked away.

The room seemed smaller.

Margaret continued.

"Before she left my house, Rachel gave me an envelope. She told me I was not to open it unless one of two things happened."

Jack slowly looked back.

"What things?"

"If someone tried to take Ellie away from you."

Margaret's voice broke.

"Or if anyone ever used the name Marcus Vale."

Silence.

Even Owen looked unsettled.

Jack stepped toward her.

"You had this for eighteen months?"

"I was afraid."

"Where is it?"

"At my house."

Jack laughed once, without humor.

"You left the envelope at your house?"

"I didn't know this would happen today."

"You knew enough to tell me to stay calm."

Margaret stood.

"Because the school called me before they called you."

Jack stopped.

"What did they say?"

"They asked whether I knew Marcus Vale."

The anger drained from Jack's face.

Margaret reached into her purse.

"And because this was left on my windshield outside the school."

She placed a folded piece of paper on the table.

There were only seven words printed on it.

Do not let Jack reach the girl.

Dr. Collins looked at Owen.

Owen immediately touched the radio clipped to his shoulder.

"Lock down pediatric exits."

Jack stared at the note.

Then at Margaret.

"Who left it?"

"I didn't see."

Dr. Collins picked up her tablet.

"There's something else you need to know."

Jack looked at her.

"Ellie woke up for less than a minute."

His heart jumped.

"What did she say?"

"She asked whether her father had arrived."

Jack moved toward the door.

Dr. Collins stopped him.

"Then she said someone named Uncle Victor told her that her father had changed his name."

Every muscle in Jack's body tightened.

"Victor was at the school?"

"We don't know."

Dr. Collins continued.

"Ellie also said he promised that another man would come to take her home from the hospital."

Jack turned toward Owen.

"No one takes her anywhere."

Owen nodded.

"No one leaves this unit until we verify every document."

Jack looked at the man whose shirt he had grabbed only minutes earlier.

For the first time, he understood that Owen had not been keeping him from Ellie.

Owen might have been keeping someone else from reaching her.

Then a nurse opened the consultation room door.

"Dr. Collins?"

The doctor's expression immediately sharpened.

"What is it?"

"There's an attorney downstairs."

"For whom?"

May you like

The nurse swallowed.

"For Marcus Vale."
