Chapter 9 - The Offer)

Margaret requested a meeting with Ava.
Not Daniel.
Not Caroline.
Ava.
The message arrived through James Vale, the Sterling family's attorney.
Neutral location.
No press.
No recording devices.
Ava agreed to none of those conditions.
She chose the private dining room of a hotel.
She brought her own attorney.
She placed her phone on the table.
Recording.
Margaret arrived seven minutes late.
She wore black.
No visible mark remained from Daniel's slap.
She sat opposite Ava.
"You've become dramatic."
Ava smiled.
"You suspended my daughter above a mud hole."
"I taught an indulged child consequences."
"She's two."
"Exactly when consequences begin."
Ava stared at her.
"You really believe that."
Margaret's expression did not change.
"I believe children become what their parents permit."
"And sons?"
Something moved behind Margaret's eyes.
Ava continued.
"Did you teach Daniel consequences too?"
"This meeting isn't about Daniel."
"It's about control."
Margaret smiled.
"Finally. You're learning."
James Vale shifted uncomfortably.
Ava's attorney said nothing.
Margaret placed a folder on the table.
"Twenty million dollars."
Ava looked at it.
"For what?"
"You know."
"Say it."
Margaret sighed.
"You leave Daniel."
"No."
"You take Lily."
Ava stared.
Margaret continued.
"You relocate anywhere outside Massachusetts. You sign a confidentiality agreement. You relinquish any current or future claim against the Sterling estate."
Ava laughed.
Margaret looked annoyed.
"Is something amusing?"
"Yes."
"What?"
"You still think I'm here for your money."
"Everyone is here for money eventually."
"That's the saddest thing you've ever said."
Margaret's jaw tightened.
Ava pushed the folder back.
"No."
"Read the number again."
"I could read it upside down."
"Twenty million dollars creates security."
"My daughter already has security."
"Not when Daniel loses everything."
Ava leaned back.
"There it is."
"What?"
"The threat."
"Reality isn't a threat."
Margaret lowered her voice.
"Daniel is emotionally unstable. The video proves it."
"The video proves he slapped a woman who publicly humiliated a child."
"Courts dislike violence."
"So do I."
Margaret looked surprised.
Ava continued.
"I told Daniel he was wrong to hit you."
Margaret almost smiled.
"Good."
"I also told him that protecting our daughter means never letting her near you unsupervised again."
The smile disappeared.
Margaret's fingers tightened around the folder.
"You think you can remove my granddaughter from me?"
Ava's expression became hard.
"Listen carefully."
Margaret went still.
"Being related to Lily does not give you ownership of her."
"I am her grandmother."
"You are the adult she now checks for behind doors."
Margaret looked away for the first time.
Only briefly.
Ava noticed.
"She asks if you're coming at night."
Margaret's face changed.
Ava continued.
"She used to love pink balloons. Now she cries when she sees them."
James Vale closed his eyes.
Margaret remained silent.
"Does that make you proud?"
"I never intended for her to fall."
Ava froze.
It was the first admission.
"You intended for her to be lifted."
Margaret realized her mistake.
Ava's phone was recording.
Margaret looked at it.
Then at James.
"End this meeting."
Ava did not move.
"You told staff not to interfere."
Margaret stood.
Ava remained seated.
"You called my daughter a sin."
Margaret picked up her bag.
Ava spoke softly.
"Richard left an original trust."
Margaret stopped.
James Vale looked sharply at Ava.
The room changed.
Ava watched Margaret.
There.
Fear.
Tiny.
Almost invisible.
But real.
Margaret slowly turned.
"I have no idea what you're talking about."
"You signed it as a witness."
Margaret's face became expressionless.
James Vale looked stunned.
Ava continued.
"No morality clause."
Silence.
"No unilateral control."
Margaret's voice was quiet.
"Where did you get it?"
Ava smiled.
"Thank you."
"For what?"
"For confirming it's real."
Margaret's anger finally appeared.
She stepped toward Ava.
"You have no idea what you're touching."
"Then explain it."
"You think Richard was a saint?"
"No."
"You think Rebecca Hale was a victim?"
"I think you were afraid enough of her daughter to erase her from the family."
Margaret's face drained.
James whispered, "Rose."
Margaret turned toward him.
"You knew?" Ava asked.
James looked horrified.
"I knew there had been another beneficiary. I didn't know she was Richard's daughter."
Margaret stared at him.
"Be very careful."
James looked at the woman he had represented for twenty years.
Something in him changed.
"No," he said quietly. "I think I'm done being careful."
Margaret picked up the settlement folder.
She looked at Ava.
"Twenty million was generosity."
Ava stood.
"And now?"
Margaret smiled coldly.
"Now I spend whatever it takes to destroy you."
Ava walked toward the door.
Before leaving, she looked back.
"You already tried."
Margaret's expression hardened.
Ava continued.
"You used balloons, mud and a frightened two-year-old."
May you like
She opened the door.
"And somehow you're still the one who ended up humiliated."
