Chapter 7 - The Price of Silence)

Rebecca's story began thirty-three years earlier.

It lasted almost two hours.

By the time she finished, nobody in the room looked at the Sterling family the same way.

Margaret had never physically kidnapped Rose herself.

She was too careful for that.

Instead, according to Rebecca, Margaret used money.

Threats.

Lawyers.

Investigators.

Rose was twelve when Margaret first approached her at school.

She told the girl Richard Sterling was ashamed of her.

Rebecca found out and confronted Margaret.

Margaret denied everything.

Then Rebecca lost her apartment.

A week later, the medical practice where she worked as an administrator fired her.

Then the bank called in a loan that had never been late.

"Coincidences," Rebecca said. "That was always her favorite weapon."

Richard eventually learned what Margaret had done.

He secretly helped Rebecca relocate.

Years later, when Rose became an adult, Richard brought Rebecca into Sterling Hospitality.

Why?

Because he was preparing to reveal the truth.

"Why didn't he tell us?" Caroline asked.

"Shame," Rebecca said.

Caroline looked angry.

"That's not good enough."

"No," Rebecca agreed. "It isn't."

Daniel sat near the window.

"Tell me about October seventeenth."

Rebecca went silent.

Ava watched her.

"The airport photograph."

Rebecca looked at Daniel.

"You received it."

"Yes."

"Then someone else has started moving."

"Who?"

"I don't know."

Daniel leaned forward.

"What happened that day?"

Rebecca looked at her hands.

"Richard asked me to meet him in Providence."

"Why?"

"He had proof."

"Of what?"

"Foundation money being redirected."

"To where?"

"Political donations. Private settlements. Payments to people who had information Margaret didn't want public."

Caroline stared.

"Blackmail?"

Rebecca nodded.

"Sometimes."

Ava thought of Helen.

Gardeners threatened with unemployment.

Samuel threatened through his daughter's medical insurance.

Margaret's pattern had been consistent for decades.

Daniel asked, "Where was Dad going after Providence?"

"A private airfield."

"To Chicago?"

Rebecca shook her head.

"No."

Daniel's pulse jumped.

"Then where?"

"Virginia."

"Why?"

"To meet a federal investigator."

Caroline stood.

"Dad was going to report Mom?"

"Not exactly. He was going to report financial crimes he believed had been committed through Sterling entities."

"By Mom."

"By several people."

Daniel remembered the message.

He did not die where you think.

"What happened?"

Rebecca's voice became quieter.

"Richard never reached Virginia."

Daniel stared at her.

"The death certificate says Chicago."

"I know."

"Were you with him?"

"Until the airfield."

"Then?"

"He boarded a Sterling jet."

"Whose jet?"

"One controlled by the family office."

"Pilot?"

"Thomas Greer."

Daniel knew the name.

Greer had retired years ago.

"Where is he?"

Rebecca's face told him the answer.

"Dead."

"When?"

"Six months after Richard."

Caroline looked ill.

"Cause?"

"Car accident."

Daniel stood.

"This sounds insane."

Rebecca nodded.

"I know."

"You expect me to believe my mother arranged a fake flight, falsified a death certificate, murdered my father and killed the pilot?"

"I didn't say that."

"You don't have to."

Rebecca remained calm.

"Daniel, I don't know how Richard died."

"Then what do you know?"

"I know Margaret lied about where."

Silence.

Rebecca reached into her handbag.

She removed a sealed plastic sleeve.

Inside was a hotel keycard.

"Richard gave me this before he boarded."

Daniel took it.

The logo belonged to a luxury hotel in Baltimore.

Room 814.

"He told me that if he didn't call by midnight, I should go there."

"Did you?"

"Yes."

"What was inside?"

"Nothing."

Daniel frowned.

"The room was empty?"

"Completely."

"Then why does this matter?"

Rebecca looked at him.

"Because the hotel had no record of Richard booking it."

Caroline asked, "Then who did?"

Rebecca looked toward the staircase.

"Lily's grandmother."

Daniel closed his eyes.

Margaret.

Ava sat beside him.

"What brought you back now?"

Rebecca looked at Lily's photograph on the mantel.

"Rose."

Daniel opened his eyes.

"What about her?"

"She contacted me three weeks ago."

"Why?"

"She received a package."

"From who?"

"No return address."

"What was inside?"

Rebecca hesitated.

"A copy of Richard's original trust."

Caroline stood.

"The one before the morality clause?"

Rebecca nodded.

Daniel's voice sharpened.

"Where is it?"

"Rose has it."

"Bring her here."

Rebecca shook her head.

"No."

"Why?"

"Because Rose doesn't trust any Sterling."

"I'm her brother."

"You're a stranger carrying the name that destroyed her childhood."

Daniel could not argue.

Rebecca continued.

"But she agreed to meet Ava."

Everyone looked at Ava.

Ava blinked.

"Me?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because she watched the garden video."

Rebecca's expression softened.

"She said any woman who ran through a crowd barefoot to save her daughter deserved five minutes of trust."
