THE DAY THE GARDEN WENT SILENT / Chapter 12 / 15

Chapter 12 - Margaret's Truth)

Margaret agreed to meet them at the Sterling mansion.

Daniel almost refused to go there.

Ava insisted.

"That's where she feels strongest."

"Exactly."

"And that's why she needs to lose there."

They arrived at noon.

Daniel.

Ava.

Caroline.

Rose.

Rebecca.

James.

Margaret waited in the library.

The same room where Lily had once returned strangely quiet after breaking a porcelain doll.

Ava noticed that immediately.

Daniel did too.

He looked toward the closed doors.

"Before anything else, tell me what happened to Lily in this room."

Margaret's expression tightened.

"This is about Richard."

"It's about everything."

Margaret looked at Ava.

"I made the child sit quietly."

"For how long?"

"Ten minutes."

"You told her she was bad."

"She broke something."

"She was one."

Margaret looked annoyed.

Daniel stepped forward.

"You made her afraid."

"Children need boundaries."

"Not fear."

Margaret smiled bitterly.

"You sound like your father."

"Good."

The smile disappeared.

Rose stood near Rebecca.

Margaret refused to look at her.

Daniel noticed.

"Look at her."

Margaret remained still.

"Look at my sister."

Slowly, Margaret turned.

Rose met her eyes.

Thirty-three years collapsed into one room.

Margaret spoke first.

"You've grown."

Rose almost laughed.

"You saw me when I was twenty-two."

Margaret said nothing.

Rose's voice trembled but held.

"You don't get to speak to me like a lost aunt at a reunion."

Margaret looked away.

Daniel stepped closer.

"Tell us about Dad."

Margaret sat.

For the first time, she looked old.

Not elegant.

Not powerful.

Old.

"Richard discovered that Victor Dane was moving money through Sterling Foundation vendors."

James asked, "With your knowledge?"

Margaret looked at him.

"At first, no."

"And later?"

"Later I discovered it."

"Did you participate?"

Margaret hesitated.

"Yes."

Caroline whispered, "Why?"

"Because the company was nearly insolvent."

Daniel stared.

"Sterling?"

"In 2008, yes."

None of them knew.

Margaret continued.

"Victor used political relationships to keep lenders quiet. Money moved. Favors were exchanged."

"You stole from charity."

"We borrowed against accounts."

Rose laughed bitterly.

"Poor people always become a convenient bank for rich families."

Margaret flinched.

Just slightly.

Richard found out.

He wanted to confess everything.

Victor threatened him.

Margaret begged him to wait.

Richard refused.

On October 17, Richard boarded a private flight but diverted to Baltimore.

Victor met him.

They argued.

Richard decided disappearing would protect his children while federal investigators built a case.

Daniel stared.

"He staged his death."

"Yes."

"With your help?"

"No."

Margaret's eyes hardened.

"With Victor's."

Ava frowned.

"Why would Victor help a man who planned to expose him?"

Margaret looked at her.

"Because Richard had evidence stored somewhere Victor couldn't find."

"Insurance."

"Exactly."

Daniel paced.

"Then whose body was in the grave?"

Margaret looked away.

"I never asked."

Everyone went silent.

Caroline looked sick.

"You buried a stranger as our father and never asked?"

"I was told the arrangements were legal."

Rose laughed.

"That's impossible."

Margaret snapped.

"You think I wasn't afraid?"

The room fell silent.

It was the first time Margaret had admitted fear.

She stood.

"Richard vanished. Victor controlled half the company's debt. Federal investigators were asking questions. I had two children at home and one secret daughter who could destroy the estate plan."

Rose stared.

Margaret immediately regretted the words.

"Destroy."

Rose repeated.

"That's what I was to you?"

Margaret looked at her.

"A threat."

Rebecca stepped forward.

"She was a child."

"I know."

"No. You don't."

Rebecca's voice shook.

"You looked at every child and saw leverage."

Margaret's eyes moved toward Ava.

Then toward the door.

Toward the garden beyond it.

Perhaps she remembered Lily.

For the first time, something like shame appeared.

Daniel did not forgive her.

But he saw it.

"Where did Dad go?" he asked.

Margaret sat again.

"Switzerland first."

"And then?"

"Canada."

"Then?"

"I lost contact."

"When?"

"Six months later."

"Why?"

"He stopped calling."

"Did you search?"

"Yes."

"Victor?"

"Also searched."

Ava asked, "Maybe Richard realized neither of you could be trusted."

Margaret looked at her.

"Possibly."

James opened a folder.

"The trust."

Margaret sighed.

"Yes."

"You forged the amendment."

"Yes."

Caroline closed her eyes.

No denial.

No excuse.

Daniel asked, "Why?"

"Because without control of the company, Victor would have taken everything."

"So you committed fraud."

"I kept thirty thousand people employed."

"And yourself in power."

Margaret looked at him.

"Both can be true."

Daniel had no answer to that.

Margaret continued.

"I told myself every compromise was temporary."

Rose said, "Thirty-three years is a long temporary."

Margaret's eyes filled.

Nobody expected it.

Not even Margaret.

She looked at Rose.

"I hated what you represented."

Rose remained still.

"You were proof Richard had loved someone before me."

Rebecca said nothing.

Margaret continued.

"And every time I saw you, I remembered that I had built my marriage by making him choose."

Rose's voice softened.

"That was your shame. Not mine."

Margaret nodded.

"Yes."

One word.

Simple.

Devastating.

Then Ava asked the question that mattered most to her.

"Why Lily?"

Margaret looked down.

Ava's voice shook.

"Whatever happened with Richard, Rebecca, Rose, Victor, the company, the trust. Lily is two."

Margaret remained silent.

Ava stepped closer.

"Why did you punish my daughter?"

Margaret finally looked at her.

"Because she loved you more than she feared me."

Ava stared.

Margaret continued.

"And I realized Daniel did too."

Daniel's expression changed.

Margaret whispered.

"I thought if I could teach her early enough, she would understand who controlled the family."

Ava felt sick.

Margaret closed her eyes.

"Instead, I became exactly what Richard said I was becoming."

Daniel's voice was quiet.

"What did he say?"

Margaret opened her eyes.

"A woman who would rather be obeyed than loved."

Silence filled the library.

Margaret looked at Daniel.

Then Rose.

May you like

Then Caroline.

"I was."
