THE DAY THE GARDEN WENT SILENT / Chapter 11 / 15

Chapter 11 - The Man in Room 814)

Nobody slept.

Not Daniel.

Not Ava.

Not Caroline.

Rose left before midnight but called Rebecca from the car.

Margaret's statement changed the investigation completely.

If it was manipulation, it was cruel.

If it was true, it was impossible.

Daniel pulled the official records.

Death certificate.

Hospital report.

Funeral home documentation.

Everything looked legitimate.

Except one detail James discovered at 2:14 a.m.

The physician who signed Richard's death certificate had surrendered his medical license eight months later.

Fraud.

Not connected to Richard.

Still troubling.

Then Ava remembered the Baltimore hotel keycard.

Room 814.

By sunrise they were driving south.

Ava wanted Daniel to wait for professional investigators.

Daniel refused.

"You don't have to come."

"That stopped being convincing around chapter one of our marriage."

Daniel almost laughed.

The Baltimore hotel had changed ownership twice.

Room 814 still existed.

The current manager found archived records.

Margaret Sterling had booked the room.

October 17.

One night.

Paid through Dane Capital Services.

Victor Dane.

The manager found something else.

A maintenance incident.

Room 814's electronic lock had failed at 10:42 p.m.

A hotel engineer entered.

The engineer's name was Luis Ortega.

Now retired.

Still living nearby.

They found him that afternoon.

Luis remembered the room.

Not because of Margaret.

Because of the man inside.

"I thought he was sick," Luis said.

Daniel showed Richard's photograph.

Luis stared.

"That's him."

Daniel forgot how to breathe.

"You saw this man?"

"Yes."

"Alive?"

Luis looked confused.

"Of course alive."

"What time?"

"Maybe eleven."

Richard's death certificate said he died in Chicago at 9:18.

Ava sat down.

Daniel leaned forward.

"Was he alone?"

Luis shook his head.

"A woman was there."

"Margaret?"

Daniel showed her photograph.

Luis examined it.

"No."

"Rebecca?"

Another photograph.

"No."

"Who?"

Luis shrugged.

"Dark hair. Younger. Maybe forty."

Ava asked, "Anyone else?"

Luis thought.

"A man came while I fixed the lock."

"Do you remember him?"

"Tall. Expensive suit."

Daniel showed Victor Dane.

Luis immediately nodded.

"Him."

Daniel's stomach dropped.

"What happened?"

"They argued."

"About what?"

"I didn't understand. Rich people whisper when they're angry."

"Did you hear anything?"

Luis closed his eyes.

Then opened them.

"The sick man said, 'She'll come after the children.'"

Daniel felt cold.

"Anything else?"

"The other man said, 'Then disappear.'"

Ava and Daniel looked at each other.

Luis continued.

"I finished the lock and left."

"Did you see Richard again?"

"No."

"Police ever contact you?"

"No."

Daniel stood.

Outside, he called Caroline.

"Dad was alive after the time on his death certificate."

Caroline said nothing.

Then she whispered.

"Then whose body did we bury?"

Daniel closed his eyes.

They had not viewed Richard's body fully.

Margaret said the medical procedures had altered him.

The coffin remained mostly closed.

Daniel had touched his father's hand.

Or believed he had.

Ava took the phone.

"Caroline, check the funeral home."

"Already calling."

Thirty minutes later Caroline called back.

Her voice shook.

"The funeral director died five years ago. The business records burned in a warehouse fire."

Daniel laughed bitterly.

"Of course."

"But I found something."

"What?"

"The cemetery has an exhumation policy."

Ava looked at Daniel.

He knew what came next.

Three days later, with legal authorization obtained through family counsel and a private judge's order, Richard Sterling's coffin was opened.

Daniel did not attend.

Neither did Caroline.

Samples were taken.

DNA testing was expedited.

The result arrived forty-eight hours later.

James Vale called them to his office.

Daniel sat beside Caroline.

Ava held his hand.

James placed the report on the table.

"The remains are not genetically related to either of you."

Caroline began crying.

Daniel stared at the page.

Richard Sterling was not in the grave.

His father had not been buried eleven years ago.

Ava whispered.

"Then he could be alive."

James nodded carefully.

"Possibly."

Daniel looked toward the window.

His mother knew.

Or claimed she knew.

He called her.

Margaret answered on the first ring.

Daniel did not say hello.

"Where is my father?"

Margaret was silent.

"Where is he?"

Margaret finally spoke.

"You found the grave."

"Where is he?"

"He made his choice."

"What choice?"

"To leave."

Daniel stood.

"He abandoned us?"

Margaret's voice sharpened.

"Don't romanticize him now."

"Tell me where he is."

"I don't know."

"You're lying."

"I knew where he was once."

"When?"

"For six months after he disappeared."

Daniel's entire body went still.

"You knew he was alive."

"Yes."

"And you let us believe he was dead."

"Yes."

Caroline covered her mouth.

Daniel's voice cracked.

"Why?"

May you like

Margaret answered with the coldest sentence she had ever spoken.

"Because he asked me to."
