Chapter 9 - THE KEY INSIDE THE KEY
Police tactical teams entered Vale International at 1:07 a.m.
They found Vivian alone in Ethan’s office.
Her restraints had been attached to the chair, but she had not been injured. She remembered Adrian entering and asking to review old property files. When she turned toward the cabinet, he placed something over her mouth.
She woke while he was tying her hands.
“Did he say anything?” Ortiz asked.
Vivian sat beneath a blanket in the medical room.
“He kept asking where Ethan stored Claire’s personal effects.”
“Did you answer?”
“I told him they were destroyed.”
Ethan looked at her. “They weren’t.”
Vivian lowered her eyes.
After Claire’s death, Ethan had ordered everything from Blackwood House placed in storage. He never opened the boxes. Adrian later told him a warehouse fire had destroyed them.
Vivian had quietly moved several boxes before the fire.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” Ethan asked.
“Mr. Crowe was removing documents. Your wife once told me that if anything happened to her, I should protect the blue box.”
Nora stepped closer. “Where is it?”
Vivian looked toward the wall safe.
Ethan entered his code.
Inside was a small blue metal box that he had never seen before.
The brass key from Claire’s letter fit the lock.
The box contained a child’s music cylinder, a folded map and an empty ring case.
Nora turned the brass key in her hand.
One end looked slightly wider than the other.
She twisted it.
The key separated into two pieces.
Inside was a tiny data chip.
“The key wasn’t only for the house,” she said.
Ortiz handed the chip to a technician. Within minutes, they accessed an encrypted recording.
Claire appeared on the office screen.
She was sitting in Ethan’s chair.
“If Nora has found this, then Adrian has already activated Mirror.”
Ethan looked at Ortiz. “Project Mirror.”
Claire continued.
“Mirror creates identities that cannot be easily questioned. Faces, voices, medical histories and financial records can all be duplicated. Adrian was the first public test.”
The image changed.
Two men stood side by side.
Both had Adrian’s face.
One wore the engraved ring. The other did not.
“The original Adrian Crowe agreed to cooperate with Lantern in exchange for wealth and influence. The second man was created to perform actions Adrian could deny.”
Nora leaned toward the screen.
“Created how?”
Claire answered with diagrams of surgical procedures, vocal training and digital records.
“Not cloning. Reconstruction. A desperate person can be given a new face, a new name and a complete history. Mirror makes the replacement legally real.”
The man with the ring spoke on the recording.
“My name was Thomas Mercer. Adrian promised to find my daughter if I became him.”
The original Adrian laughed.
“And did he?” Claire asked.
Thomas looked away.
Claire faced the camera again.
“Thomas helped me after he discovered Adrian had lied. He knows the location of Blackwood Node 2.”
The recording cut to a map.
The second facility north of the mansion was connected to a private road and an underground loading entrance.
“The master archive is there,” Claire said. “So is the list of every Mirror identity.”
Ethan examined the map.
“Why didn’t she take this to the police?”
Ortiz answered before the video did.
“Because she didn’t know who was real.”
Claire’s expression became distant.
“I trusted one investigator. Two days later, Adrian played me a recording of our conversation. That was when I understood that Lantern had entered law enforcement.”
The recording flickered.
“Ethan, I know you will blame yourself. Do not. They used your love for us as a weapon. But if Nora is involved, you must finally choose her over the company.”
Ethan looked at his daughter.
Nora kept her eyes on the screen.
Claire’s final words appeared beneath a burst of static.
“The Architect is someone Ethan sees every day.”
The video ended.
No one spoke.
Then Vivian stood too quickly.
Her blanket fell to the floor.

Three vertical lines were engraved across its surface.
