THE DARK HOUSE / Chapter 11 / 15

Chapter 11 - THE OTHER NORA

The person on the screen looked exactly like Nora.

She had the same dark hair, the same narrow scar above her left eyebrow and the same gray-green eyes. She stood in a white room with no visible windows.

Even her expression was familiar.

But Ethan knew immediately that she was not his daughter.

The real Nora became angry by becoming still.

The woman on the screen smiled.

“Hello, Ethan.”

“Who are you?”

“Nora Vale.”

The real Nora stepped toward the camera. “Try again.”

The woman studied her.

“You are Original Nora. I am Authorized Nora.”

Vivian whispered, “Mirror has never produced a replacement this accurate.”

The false Nora raised her hand. An electronic scanner beside her confirmed her fingerprints.

“The archive recognizes me,” she said. “The company recognizes me. Government databases recognize me. By sunrise, your father’s accounts and properties will recognize me.”

Ethan moved closer to the screen.

“Where are you?”

“You already know.”

Node 2.

The woman’s smile disappeared.

“Bring the brass key and Vivian’s ring. Come without police. Otherwise the Lantern archive will be converted into a list of targets.”

The screen displayed hundreds of photographs.

Nora saw teachers, doctors, journalists and families.

“If you release those names,” Vivian said, “people will die.”

“Then arrive before midnight.”

The screen went black.

Ortiz immediately began organizing a tactical response.

Ethan pulled Nora aside.

“You’re staying here.”

“You heard her. They need my verification.”

“They already have your face and fingerprints.”

“Not everything.”

Nora remembered Claire’s explanation. The archive required biological signatures from both Ethan and Nora. A reconstructed identity might fool external systems, but Claire would have created a more personal safeguard.

“Mom used to make me repeat a sentence whenever I was scared,” Nora said.

Ethan remembered it.

Darkness is only a room waiting for light.

Claire had taught it to Nora during thunderstorms.

“The system may require something the replacement doesn’t know,” Nora said.

“Then tell us the phrase.”

“They may need my natural response, not a recording.”

Ethan shook his head.

“You are not walking into their facility.”

Nora’s voice softened. “Dad, look at me.”

He did.

“For years, you thought protecting me meant staying away. Now you think it means locking me in another room. Both choices leave me alone.”

“I can’t lose you.”

“Then stop treating me like I’m already gone.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

When he opened them, the argument inside him was over.

“We go together.”

Ortiz objected, but she understood the threat. An official raid risked warning anyone connected to Lantern. She agreed to maintain a covert team beyond the property while Ethan, Nora and Vivian entered with concealed tracking devices.

Samuel insisted on joining them.

“My son may be inside.”

“You are not physically ready,” Ortiz said.

“I’ve waited twelve years.”

He placed a folded paper in Nora’s hand.

It was a drawing made by Daniel as a child. It showed the blue line beneath Blackwood House leading to a second building.

At the bottom, Daniel had written:

THE DOOR OPENS FOR THREE.

“The three rings,” Nora said.

Samuel nodded.

At 10:40 p.m., they arrived near Node 2.

The facility appeared to be an abandoned stone pumping station surrounded by dead fields. No lights were visible from the road.

Vivian used her ring to open a concealed gate.

They descended a concrete ramp into the ground.

At the first security door, a camera scanned Nora.

ACCESS GRANTED.

AUTHORIZED NORA VALE.

The real Nora looked at Ethan.

“They changed my identity before I arrived.”

The door opened.

Inside, two security guards lay unconscious beside the wall. Someone had entered before them.

They followed a trail of damaged cameras to a circular chamber filled with glass partitions.

Behind one partition stood a man who looked like Adrian Crowe.

He wore the three-line ring.

“Thomas Mercer?” Vivian asked.

The man nodded.

“Where is Adrian?” Ethan demanded.

Thomas pointed toward an elevator.

“He took the other Nora to the archive.”

“Who attacked the guards?”

“I did.”

“Why should we trust you?”

“You shouldn’t.”

Thomas entered a code, opening the glass partition.

“But if you want to save your daughter’s identity, you have nineteen minutes.”

Samuel grabbed his arm.

“My son. Daniel Reed. Is he here?”

Thomas’s expression changed.

“He was.”

“Where is he now?”

May you like

Thomas looked toward the elevator.

“Working for the Architect.”
