Chapter 13 - CLAIRE’S FINAL TEST

They moved through the darkness as alarms flashed red.

Daniel knew the corridors. He guided them through a maintenance passage while Adrian’s guards followed in the main hallway.

Samuel stayed beside his son.

Neither spoke. There would be time for explanations only if they survived.

They reached the archive chamber at 11:57 p.m.

The room was circular, with a transparent column rising from floor to ceiling. Thousands of lights moved inside it like stars.

The false Nora stood beside the central console.

She turned when the doors opened.

“You are late.”

Nora stepped forward. “You stole my name.”

“I improved it.”

“You’re wearing my face.”

“It was selected because people trust it.”

Ethan heard Claire’s warning in his memory.

Do not trust the person standing behind you.

He looked over his shoulder.

Vivian was reaching toward the emergency lock.

“Stop,” Ethan said.

Everyone turned toward her.

Vivian froze.

“You were going to seal us inside.”

“I was closing the door against Adrian.”

“No. The controls are reversed. Claire designed them.”

Vivian slowly removed her hand.

Nora stared at her. “Are you working for the Architect?”

Vivian’s eyes filled with tears.

“I worked for Claire.”

“That wasn’t the question.”

Before Vivian could answer, the false Nora activated the console.

VOICE VERIFICATION REQUIRED.

She repeated Nora’s voice perfectly.

“Darkness is only a room waiting for light.”

VOICE ACCEPTED.

Ethan’s heart sank.

RETINAL VERIFICATION REQUIRED.

The false Nora looked into the scanner.

RETINAL PATTERN ACCEPTED.

“Mom’s safeguards failed,” Nora whispered.

“No,” Ethan said. “Claire expected this.”

FINAL VERIFICATION REQUIRED.

The console displayed a question.

WHAT DID CLAIRE PROMISE NORA ON THE NIGHT OF THE BLUE STORM?

The false Nora hesitated.

She looked at the real Nora.

Nora did not speak.

Adrian’s voice came through the corridor.

“Open the door!”

The false Nora raised a pistol and aimed it at Ethan.

“Answer the question.”

Ethan stepped between them.

“She doesn’t know.”

“I will shoot him.”

“No, you won’t.”

“You think I need him alive?”

“The archive does.”

The digital clock reached 11:59.

The false Nora moved the weapon toward Samuel.

“Answer.”

Nora closed her eyes.

The blue storm had happened when she was eight. Lightning had shattered a tree outside Blackwood House. Nora had hidden beneath the piano while Claire sat beside her.

Claire had not promised the storm would stop.

She had promised something else.

Nora faced the console.

“She promised she would always leave a light where I could find it.”

FINAL VERIFICATION ACCEPTED.

The archive opened.

Files filled every screen.

Then Claire appeared.

“This message is for my daughter.”

Nora’s face crumpled, but she remained standing.

“You found the light,” Claire said. “Now you must decide what to do with it.”

Two options appeared.

RELEASE ARCHIVE

DESTROY ARCHIVE

Adrian reached the chamber and struck the locked door.

“Open it!”

Claire continued.

“Releasing the entire archive will expose Lantern, but it will also expose victims whose identities were stolen. Destroying it will protect them, but Adrian and the Architect may escape justice.”

Nora stared at the choices.

The satisfying answer did not exist.

Ethan moved beside her.

“This is your decision.”

“No. They used your company.”

“And your life.”

Nora looked toward the false version of herself.

The woman still held the weapon, but she appeared frightened now.

“What is your real name?” Nora asked.

“I don’t have one.”

“Yes, you do.”

“I was raised here.”

“Then choose one.”

The woman’s hand trembled.

Adrian struck the outer door again.

“You belong to me!” he shouted.

The false Nora slowly lowered the weapon.

“My first name was Anna.”

Nora entered a third command into the console.

COPY VICTIM FILES TO SECURE RELEASE.

COPY CRIMINAL RECORDS TO PUBLIC RELEASE.

DESTROY BIOMETRIC ACCESS DATABASE.

The system paused.

Claire had created no visible third option.

But the command was accepted.

Ethan looked at Nora with pride.

“You found another door.”

The archive began transmitting.

Adrian’s voice turned desperate.

“Stop it!”

The glass column changed from blue to white.

Across the country, evidence of Lantern’s crimes traveled toward courts, journalists and independent servers. At the same time, the personal records of victims moved into an encrypted system controlled by Ortiz.

The biometric database began deleting itself.

Anna touched her face.

“What happens to me?”

“You become whoever you decide to be,” Nora said.

The outer door exploded inward.

Adrian entered through smoke and shattered metal.

He saw the transmission status.

For the first time, the arrogance left his face completely.

“You have destroyed everything.”

May you like

Nora faced him.

“No. I destroyed what you owned.”
