THE DARK HOUSE / Chapter 5 / 15

Chapter 5 - THE MEMORY THEY STOLE

The signature looked perfect.

The angle of the letters, the pressure of the pen and the small line Ethan placed beneath the V were exactly right.

But he had never signed the document.

“I don’t remember this,” he said again.

Nora read the first page.

Subject E-01 exhibited temporary confusion after administration. Memory loss includes approximately six hours surrounding exposure. Further dosage is not recommended without medical supervision.

The date was three days before Claire’s death.

“Someone drugged you,” Nora said.

Ethan took the file.

A memory came to him, not as an image but as a sensation.

The taste of bitter coffee.

Claire’s voice telling him not to fall asleep.

A bright light above his face.

Then nothing.

“I woke up in my office,” he said quietly. “I thought I had worked through the night.”

Samuel watched him. “Claire found you unconscious in the basement.”

Ethan turned. “You saw me?”

“I helped her move you upstairs.”

“Why didn’t you tell the police?”

“Because Claire made me promise. She said someone inside Vale International was monitoring every call.”

Nora held up the memory drive from the hidden drawer.

“Maybe this tells us who.”

They connected it to the basement computer.

The screen requested two authorization codes.

Nora tried her birthday. It failed.

Ethan tried Claire’s birthday. It failed.

Samuel pointed toward the photograph.

“Claire never trusted a single password. She divided information between people.”

“What does that mean?” Nora asked.

“She gave you the key. She gave Ethan a phrase. And she gave me a number.”

Ethan shook his head. “She never gave me a phrase.”

“She did. You just didn’t know it was important.”

Samuel closed his eyes, trying to remember.

“The last morning she was alive, she told you something before you left this house. You argued in the foyer.”

Ethan looked toward the ceiling as if he could see the room above them.

“I accused her of hiding financial records.”

“What did she say?”

A fragment returned.

Claire standing beneath the chandelier.

Rain on the windows.

Her hands trembling.

She had pressed something into Ethan’s palm and said, When the lights disappear, follow the blue line home.

Ethan repeated the sentence.

The first authorization field unlocked.

Samuel entered the number forty-seven.

The second field opened.

Hundreds of folders appeared on the screen.

PROJECT LANTERN

PROJECT MIRROR

CROWE FOUNDATION

VALE SUBJECTS

BLACKWOOD ARCHIVE

Nora selected Project Lantern.

A video began.

Claire sat in her studio, speaking directly to the camera.

“Project Lantern began as an emergency security network. Ethan designed a system that could connect alarms, cameras and medical sensors during disasters. Adrian saw another use for it.”

The image changed to surveillance footage from private homes, offices and hotel rooms.

“He sold access to powerful clients. Politicians watched their opponents. Business leaders watched employees. Families watched one another. None of the subjects gave permission.”

Ethan moved closer to the screen.

“I shut Lantern down.”

Claire continued as though answering him.

“Ethan believed he shut it down. Adrian moved the servers beneath Blackwood House and forged Ethan’s approval.”

A list of payments appeared.

The amounts totaled more than $180 million.

Nora whispered, “He built an empire from it.”

The video shifted again.

Adrian appeared in the basement with two unidentified figures. One wore a silver ring engraved with the three-line symbol.

Claire’s voice returned.

“I have identified Adrian’s financial partners, but not the person directing them. They call that person the Architect.”

Samuel inhaled sharply.

Ethan looked at him. “You know that name?”

“I heard Adrian use it once.”

“When?”

“The night Claire died.”

Before Samuel could explain, an alarm appeared on the screen.

REMOTE DELETION INITIATED.

Files began disappearing.

Nora disconnected the memory drive.

“It’s coming from outside the house.”

Ethan examined the system logs.

The remote command had been issued from Vale International.

From his private office.

“My building requires biometric access,” Ethan said.

“Who can enter your office?” Nora asked.

“Only me and my assistant.”

“Then one of them is lying.”

Ethan reached for his phone.

There was no signal.

The basement speaker activated.

Adrian’s voice filled the room.

“I warned you not to open the files.”

Ethan looked toward the camera above the monitor.

“Unlock the door.”

“I can’t do that.”

“You mean you won’t.”

“No, Ethan. I mean someone else has taken control of the house.”

A heavy lock moved somewhere beneath them.

The concrete wall at the end of the corridor slowly opened, revealing another staircase descending into darkness.

Samuel stepped back.

“That door has been sealed for twelve years.”

Nora aimed her light into the opening.

On the first step lay a woman’s silver necklace.

May you like

Ethan recognized it immediately.

He had given it to Claire on their tenth anniversary.
