Chapter 7 - THE TUNNEL OF NAMES

The escape hatch led into an underground maintenance tunnel.
Ethan lowered Nora through first, then helped Samuel. He climbed down as the gas thickened above them and pulled the hatch closed.
Blue lights appeared along the tunnel floor.
Claire had built the route.
“Mom expected someone to be trapped down here,” Nora said.
“She expected herself to be trapped,” Ethan replied.
The passage was narrow and damp. Cables ran along one wall, connecting the house to an unknown destination beyond the property.
After several hundred feet, they found a junction chamber containing another terminal.
The screen was already active.
Names moved across it in endless columns.
Judges.
Business executives.
Police officials.
Journalists.
Military contractors.
Ethan recognized several former clients.
Beside each name appeared a number, a location and a colored symbol.
“What are the colors?” Nora asked.
Samuel pointed to the legend at the bottom of the screen.
Blue meant monitored.
Yellow meant compromised.
Red meant controlled.
Most of the names were marked yellow or red.
Nora scrolled through the list until she found Ethan Vale.
His status was blue.
Her own name appeared beneath his.
Her status was red.
Ethan’s face changed.
“How could she be controlled?”
Nora opened her file.
Photographs appeared from her school, apartment and workplace. Her emails had been copied. Her travel history had been recorded.
A folder titled BEHAVIORAL PRESSURE contained records of rejected job applications, canceled grants and anonymous complaints filed against her architecture projects.
“They’ve been shaping my life,” she whispered.
Ethan remembered every time Nora had called him after another opportunity disappeared. He had told her to work harder. He had assumed her anger came from disappointment.
Someone had been closing doors around her while he watched from a distance.
“I’m sorry,” he said.
Nora did not look at him. “For which part?”
“For believing your struggles were ordinary.”
“You barely asked.”
“I know.”
“That’s not enough.”
“No. It isn’t.”
Samuel moved farther down the list.
His son Daniel appeared with a black symbol beside his name.
STATUS UNKNOWN
LAST LOCATION: GREYHAVEN FACILITY
Samuel touched the screen.
“He may be alive.”
The hope in his voice was almost painful.
Nora searched for Claire.
No result appeared.
She tried Claire Vale, Claire Bennett Vale and Subject C-01.
Nothing.
Ethan entered PRIMARY RESISTANCE.
A hidden file opened.
It contained only one line.
TRANSFER COMPLETED
DESTINATION: BLACKWOOD NODE 2
“Node 2?” Nora asked.
Samuel looked toward the cables.
“This tunnel doesn’t end at the road. It continues beyond the forest.”
Ethan followed the system map.
A second structure appeared two miles north of Blackwood House. It was labeled as an agricultural pumping station, but the power usage was equal to that of a hospital.
Before they could examine it, the terminal displayed a warning.
MOVEMENT DETECTED IN TUNNEL.
Three heat signatures appeared behind them.
Ethan took Nora’s hand.
“Run.”
They followed the blue lights as footsteps entered the passage.
The tunnel divided twice. Claire’s blue line guided them through the correct turns, but the figures behind them moved quickly.
Samuel began to fall behind.
Nora supported him.
“Leave me,” he said.
“No.”
“You don’t know me.”
“I know your son may be alive.”
They reached a steel ladder leading to a surface hatch.
Ethan pushed it open.
They emerged inside an abandoned greenhouse beyond the northern edge of the property.
Sunlight poured through broken glass.
For the first time in hours, Nora’s phone found a signal.
She called emergency services.
Ethan called his company.
His assistant, Vivian Shaw, answered immediately.
“Mr. Vale, where are you?”
“Lock down my office. No one enters or leaves.”
There was a pause.
“Is Miss Vale with you?”
Ethan looked at Nora.
“How do you know she’s with me?”
“Mr. Crowe said—”
“Adrian is inside Blackwood House.”
Another pause.
Then Vivian whispered, “That’s impossible.”
“Why?”
“Because Adrian Crowe entered your office ten minutes ago.”
Ethan stared back toward the distant mansion.
May you like
At an upstairs window, a figure stood watching them.
The figure lifted a glass of red wine.
