Chapter 9 - the code hidden in the crest

The timer showed twenty-four minutes.
Julian pressed the four metal buttons in the order of the true Vale crest.
Crown.
Falcon.
Key.
Shield.
Nothing happened.
Marcus examined the mechanism.
“The buttons require a six-part code.”
“There are only four symbols,” Julian said.
“Some must be pressed more than once.”
Leo studied the family signet ring hanging from Julian’s chain.
“Grandfather used to tell me a story about the falcon.”
Julian turned toward him.
“Adrian told you stories?”
“When Eleanor wasn’t listening. He said the falcon lost its crown, found a key, opened a shield, and came home.”
Sarah repeated the sequence.
“Falcon, crown, key, shield, then falcon again.”
“That is five,” Marcus said.
Leo touched the ring.
“He said it came home carrying two keys.”
Julian pressed:
Falcon.
Crown.
Key.
Shield.
Falcon.
Key.
The cabinet clicked.
A narrow drawer opened beneath it.
Inside was an old mechanical lever and a small recording device.
Marcus pulled the lever.
The steel door unlocked.
The timer stopped at twenty-one minutes.
Fresh air entered from the corridor as emergency teams rushed inside.
Sarah picked up the recording device.
A label displayed one date.
The night Adrian Vale died.
Julian held it but did not press play.
“Not here,” Sarah said.
They returned upstairs.
At 1:20 a.m., Marcus secured Julian’s private office. Leo sat between Sarah and Julian on the sofa while two police officers stood outside.
A retired judge named Margaret Sloan agreed to hold an emergency video hearing. She required proof of immediate danger and evidence that the active custody order might be fraudulent.
Marcus transmitted the hidden-camera recording, the original temporary order, Sarah’s medical clearance, and the payment records connected to Judge Halden.
Judge Sloan scheduled the hearing for 2:00 a.m.
Until then, she ordered Leo to remain inside the hotel under police supervision.
For the first time that night, no one could legally take him.
Julian placed Adrian’s recording device on the desk.
Sarah pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then Adrian Vale’s voice spoke.
“My name is Adrian Sebastian Vale. I am recording this because someone inside my family intends to take control of my grandson before he is old enough to understand what he owns.”
Julian looked at Leo.
Adrian continued.
“The succession trust was created by my father. It transfers controlling authority over the Vale Foundation to the first descendant who demonstrates independent discovery of the family’s false seal.”
Leo looked toward the backward crest on the custody order.
Julian’s eyes widened.
“The trust belongs to Leo?”
“Not yet,” Sarah said. “It says authority transfers after discovery.”
The recording continued.
“No child should carry that power alone. The second authority belongs to Sarah Bennett, not because she is connected to the Vale bloodline, but because she was the only person who refused my money when I asked her to change a hospital record.”
Sarah closed her eyes.
She remembered Adrian’s final night.
He had offered her enough money to erase the difference between the false time of death and the real one.
She had refused.
That had been his test.
“If Sarah and Leo stand together,” Adrian said, “they can remove any trustee, chairman, or director from the foundation. Including my son. Including Eleanor. Including anyone who has forgotten that the Vale fortune was created to protect people rather than control them.”
Julian absorbed the words without anger.
“What is in the metal case?” Sarah whispered toward the recording.
Adrian’s voice answered as though he had expected the question.
“The case contains the original identity file of the person who designed the false guardianship plan.”
The recording paused.
Then Adrian added:
“That person was not Eleanor.”
A knock sounded at the office door.
Marcus opened it.
A police detective entered holding Eleanor’s phone.
“We found this abandoned in a car two blocks away.”
“Any location data?” Julian asked.
“The phone was wiped.”
The detective placed it on the desk.
“But one message arrived after we recovered it.”
