Chapter 13 - eleanor returns

The evidence from Adrian’s case changed everything.
Judge Sloan held a second emergency session before noon.
The permanent custody order was declared fraudulent and void.
Sarah’s parental rights were fully restored.
Judge Halden was suspended pending criminal investigation. His passport was seized, and he was placed under supervised release after prosecutors discovered transfers linked to the false Vale network.
The court issued arrest warrants for Eleanor and Daniel.
The Vale Foundation board removed Eleanor as trustee and froze every account she controlled.
Julian publicly withdrew from the custody dispute and signed an agreement recognizing Sarah as Leo’s primary guardian. He requested shared parenting only if Leo and Sarah chose it after family counseling.
Sarah read the agreement twice.
“You are giving up the legal fight.”
“There should never have been one.”
“You could challenge Adrian’s document.”
“I could.”
“But you won’t?”
Julian looked through the office glass toward Leo, who sat at a table drawing the true and false falcons on opposite sides of a page.
“My family treated him like a key. I will not treat him like property.”
Sarah signed the temporary family arrangement.
For the first time in three years, she could legally take Leo home.
They left the hotel through a private exit that evening.
Reporters crowded beyond the gates, but Julian’s security formed a protected path.
Leo held Sarah’s hand.
Julian walked beside them.
At the car, Leo stopped.
“Are you coming with us?”
Julian hesitated.
“Your mother and I need time to decide what happens next.”
“That means no.”
“It means I will see you tomorrow, if you want.”
Leo considered it.
“Breakfast.”
Julian smiled faintly.
“Breakfast.”
Sarah opened the car door.
Before Leo climbed inside, a woman stepped from behind the security vehicle.
Eleanor.
Her evening gown had been replaced by dark trousers and a long coat. Her hair was tied back. She held both hands where the guards could see them.
Weapons were raised immediately.
“Don’t move,” Marcus ordered.
Eleanor stopped.
“I came to surrender.”
Julian stepped in front of Sarah and Leo.
“Where is Daniel?”
“I don’t know.”
“You escaped with him.”
“I escaped from him.”
Marcus approached and searched her. She carried no weapon.
Detectives placed restraints around her wrists.
Eleanor looked at Leo.
“I am sorry.”
Leo moved closer to Sarah.
“You said Mom forgot me.”
Eleanor lowered her eyes.
“I lied.”
“You said Dad didn’t want me.”
“I lied about that too.”
“Did you lock me upstairs because Daniel told you to?”
“No.”
Everyone looked at her.
Eleanor swallowed.
“I locked you upstairs because I realized he intended to take you. I thought the archive was the only room his men could not open.”
“You put a chair under the door,” Leo said.
“To keep them out.”
“You took my phone.”
“Because Daniel’s camera had recorded the number you called. I put it in my bag so his people would follow me instead of you.”
Sarah studied her.
Some of Eleanor’s actions could fit that explanation.
Others could not.
“You forged the custody order,” Sarah said.
“Yes.”
“You hid my letters.”
“Yes.”
“You told Leo I abandoned him.”
Eleanor’s face tightened.
“Yes.”
“Do not turn one protective act into innocence.”
“I am not innocent.”
“Then why surrender?”
Eleanor looked toward Julian.
“Because Daniel found North House.”
Julian froze.
“What is North House?”
Eleanor’s answer came quietly.
“The place Adrian hid your mother.”
No one spoke.
Julian’s mother had been declared dead twenty-three years earlier.
Eleanor looked at Sarah.
“Daniel believes the second seal is with her.”
Detectives moved Eleanor toward the police car.
Julian followed.
“Is my mother alive?”
Eleanor stopped beside the open door.
“She was when I saw her last year.”
Julian grabbed the top of the door.
“Where is North House?”
“I don’t know the address.”
“You expect me to believe that?”
“Adrian changed the route every time.”
“How do we find it?”
May you like
Eleanor looked toward Leo’s drawing through the car window.
“Ask the boy why the true falcon carries an iron key.”
