THE CUSTODY PAPERS / Chapter 10 / 15

Chapter 10 - the judge who arrived too early

Judge Victor Halden appeared at the Vale Grand Hotel at 1:47 a.m.

He arrived thirteen minutes before Judge Sloan’s emergency hearing and nearly an hour before anyone had informed him that the custody order was being challenged.

That mistake exposed him before he entered the building.

Marcus watched Halden’s black sedan approach the private entrance.

“Someone warned him,” he said.

Julian stood beside the security monitors.

“Eleanor?”

“Possibly.”

Sarah looked at the message recovered from Eleanor’s phone.

HALDEN IS READY. BRING THE BOY TO COURT.

The wording suggested Halden expected control, not negotiation.

Leo remained in the office with a child-services specialist and two officers. Sarah did not want to leave him, but Judge Sloan had instructed that the adults be interviewed separately before the hearing.

Halden entered the lobby carrying a leather briefcase.

“I am here to enforce an existing custody order,” he announced.

Marcus blocked his path.

“On whose request?”

“The legal guardian contacted my clerk.”

“Eleanor Vale is missing.”

“That does not invalidate her authority.”

“Why did you come personally?”

Halden’s expression tightened.

“A child may have been abducted.”

“From a locked room where Eleanor placed him?”

“I have not reviewed the facts.”

“Then how did you decide it was an abduction?”

Halden looked toward Sarah.

“You were ordered not to approach the child.”

Sarah held up the original guardianship document.

“This order expired after thirty days.”

Halden barely glanced at it.

“That document was superseded.”

“By a permanent order bearing a forged crest?”

“I am not an expert in decorative symbols.”

“You signed it.”

“I signed hundreds of orders that year.”

Julian stepped forward.

“You signed an order terminating a mother’s access to her child. You remember it.”

Halden opened his briefcase.

“I will not conduct this discussion in a hotel lobby.”

“You are not conducting anything,” Marcus said. “Judge Sloan is reviewing the case.”

The name changed Halden’s expression.

Margaret Sloan had led the judicial ethics commission before retiring. She had spent decades investigating court corruption.

“You contacted her?”

“She contacted us,” Julian said.

Halden turned toward the exit.

Detectives blocked the door.

“You are not under arrest,” one of them said. “However, we would like to ask about payments made to a company owned by your brother.”

Halden’s confidence cracked.

“I require counsel.”

“You may call one.”

He reached for his phone.

Sarah noticed a small falcon stamped on the corner of his briefcase.

It faced left.

“Open the briefcase,” she said.

Halden looked at her.

“You have no authority to search my property.”

“Neither did Eleanor, but she kept my letters for three years.”

Sarah stepped closer.

“Did she give you that briefcase?”

Halden said nothing.

Julian’s phone vibrated.

The emergency hearing had begun.

They returned to the private office, leaving detectives with Halden.

Judge Sloan appeared on a large screen. Her silver hair was pulled back, and she wore a dark robe over what appeared to be nightclothes.

“This hearing concerns the immediate safety of Leo Vale and the validity of a custody order issued by Judge Victor Halden,” she said. “I have reviewed preliminary evidence indicating potential fraud.”

Sarah sat beside Leo.

Julian sat on his other side.

Eleanor’s attorney appeared remotely, claiming he did not know her location.

Judge Sloan reviewed the original temporary order.

She examined Sarah’s medical clearance.

She viewed the recording of Eleanor locking Leo in the archive.

Then Leo spoke.

He explained the hidden room, the letters, the backward bird, and Eleanor taking the sealed envelope.

He did not exaggerate.

He did not need to.

Judge Sloan listened without interruption.

When he finished, she asked one question.

“Leo, where do you feel safe tonight?”

Leo looked at Sarah.

Then at Julian.

“With both of them.”

Judge Sloan issued an immediate ruling.

The permanent custody order was suspended.

Sarah’s parental authority was restored pending full review.

Julian was recognized as Leo’s father and granted shared protective care.

Eleanor was prohibited from contacting or approaching the child.

Sarah closed her eyes as relief moved through her.

For three years, she had imagined hearing those words.

Leo leaned against her.

Julian placed one hand over his face.

The ruling was not the end, but it was the first official truth.

Then the office door opened.

Detectives entered with Judge Halden’s briefcase.

“We obtained consent from his attorney to inspect it.”

Marcus placed the briefcase on the desk.

Inside were blank court forms, a duplicate Vale seal, and a photograph.

The photograph showed Adrian Vale standing beside Eleanor.

Between them stood a third person.

Sarah recognized the man who had followed her the night Adrian died.

Julian stared at the face.

“That’s impossible.”

Leo looked up.

“Who is he?”

May you like

Julian answered quietly.

“My brother.”
