Chapter 7 - archive b

Police filled the hotel before midnight.
Guests were interviewed and released in groups. Reporters gathered outside, broadcasting images of Eleanor’s empty chair and the forged crest.
The removal vote against Julian never took place.
The foundation board suspended all proceedings after Marcus presented the hidden-camera footage of Eleanor trapping Leo inside the archive room.
However, the custody order remained active.
Until a court officially invalidated it, Eleanor still possessed legal authority over Leo.
No one knew where she had gone.
Sarah sat with Leo in Julian’s private office while a medic cleaned the small scrape near his shoulder. The dark red stain had looked frightening beneath the ballroom lights, but most of it was wine. The scrape required only a bandage.
Julian remained near the window, speaking with attorneys.
“They want Leo transferred to temporary state care until the order is reviewed,” he said after ending the call.
Sarah stood.
“No.”
“I agree.”
“He stays with me.”
“The existing order forbids it.”
“The existing order is forged.”
“We know that. The judge has not ruled on it.”
Leo looked between them.
“Do I have to go with strangers?”
Sarah knelt beside him.
“No one is taking you tonight.”
Julian turned toward Marcus.
“Find us a judge.”
“At midnight?”
“One who hasn’t been purchased by my aunt.”
Marcus left to make calls.
Sarah studied Julian.
“You believed the order for three years.”
“I believed you stopped fighting it.”
“I filed fourteen petitions.”
“I never saw one.”
“I sent letters.”
“I never received one.”
“You could have called.”
“I did.”
Sarah stared at him.
Julian opened a drawer and removed an old phone.
He found a series of messages saved in an encrypted archive.
Each appeared to come from Sarah.
Do not contact me again.
Leo is better without either of us.
Eleanor can give him the life we cannot.
Sarah read them twice.
“I never sent these.”
Julian’s expression tightened.
“I know that now.”
The distance between them had not been created by one lie. It had been built from hundreds of carefully placed pieces.
Leo touched the family letter lying on the desk.
“Grandfather said the real papers are in Archive B.”
Julian looked at Marcus’s hotel plans.
“There is no Archive B.”
Sarah remembered Adrian’s metal case.
“He never used letters for locations.”
Julian turned toward her.
“What did he use?”
“Musical notes.”
Adrian Vale had loved the piano but could not play well. He labeled personal files with notes corresponding to rooms or people.
“B might not mean the second archive,” Sarah said. “It might mean the note B.”
Julian looked toward the grand piano visible through the office doorway.
They entered the private music room.
The piano had belonged to Adrian. Julian opened the fallboard and pressed the B key.
The note sounded dull.
He pressed it again.
A hidden latch clicked beneath the keyboard.
Marcus returned as a narrow compartment opened.
Inside was a brass key and a handwritten map of the hotel basement.
The map led to a wall behind the original boiler room.
At 12:36 a.m., Julian, Sarah, Leo, Marcus, and two police officers descended beneath the hotel.
The boiler room smelled of dust and old iron. Sarah found the marked brick and pushed.
A section of the wall opened inward.
Archive B was not a room.
It was a corridor extending beneath the foundation of the hotel.
Rows of locked cabinets lined both walls.
Each cabinet bore a year.
The first began sixty-seven years earlier.
The final cabinet was marked with the year of Leo’s birth.
Julian used the brass key.
Inside were five folders.
One contained the original temporary guardianship order.
It expired after thirty days.
Another contained Sarah’s completed medical clearance.
A third held copies of every letter she sent to Leo.
The fourth contained bank records showing Judge Halden had received regular payments from a Vale subsidiary controlled by Eleanor.
The fifth folder was empty.
A note remained inside.
THE SUCCESSION FILE HAS BEEN MOVED.
Below it was a fresh fingerprint in the dust.
Someone had entered Archive B recently.
Leo pointed toward the end of the corridor.
A red light blinked above the final cabinet.
The hidden camera was still recording.
Then a speaker crackled inside the ceiling.
May you like
Eleanor’s voice filled the archive.
“You found what I wanted you to find.”
