Chapter 4 - the vote in the ballroom

Julian carried Leo through the private corridor while Sarah and Marcus followed.

The gala orchestra had resumed, but the music was strained and uneven. Through the ballroom doors, Sarah heard Eleanor speaking from the stage.

“Recent events have forced us to question whether Julian Vale remains capable of protecting the foundation or this family.”

Julian stopped outside the doors.

A security officer handed him his phone.

The screen displayed twenty-three missed calls and a news alert.

VALE FOUNDATION CHAIRMAN FACES EMERGENCY REMOVAL VOTE

Below the headline was a photograph of Sarah entering through the hotel’s loading entrance.

Someone had taken it less than thirty minutes earlier.

The article described her as Julian’s former partner and a woman previously declared unfit to care for their son.

Sarah read the first paragraph and felt every eye in the corridor turn toward her.

“It was prepared before I arrived,” she said.

Marcus nodded.

“The publication time is five minutes ago, but the page metadata shows it was uploaded this morning.”

Julian looked toward the ballroom.

“She knew Sarah was coming.”

“Or she knew Leo would contact her,” Marcus said.

Leo raised his head from Julian’s shoulder.

“She didn’t know about the phone.”

“What phone?” Sarah asked.

“A waiter dropped it in the gallery. I used it before Eleanor found me.”

“Then how did she know?”

Leo thought for a moment.

“The room had a little red light.”

Marcus swore under his breath.

“A hidden camera.”

Julian set Leo on his feet.

“Take him somewhere safe.”

“No,” Leo said.

Julian looked down at him.

“I’m not asking.”

“She’ll say I’m lying if I leave.”

“Leo.”

“She always says I’m confused.”

The boy’s voice shook, but he held Julian’s gaze.

“I want to be there when someone finally tells her no.”

Sarah rested a hand on Julian’s arm.

“He stays between us.”

Julian looked at her hand, then at her face.

For the first time that night, they made a decision together.

Marcus opened the doors.

The ballroom contained nearly four hundred guests. Donors, judges, business leaders, reporters, and members of the Vale Foundation board stood beneath the chandeliers.

Eleanor occupied the stage.

Behind her, a screen displayed copies of Sarah’s supposed medical records and the permanent custody order.

“As you can see,” Eleanor said, “Julian has allowed an unstable individual to enter this hotel and approach a minor protected by the court.”

The guests turned toward the opening doors.

Sarah felt the judgment before anyone spoke.

Then Julian walked into the ballroom with Leo on one side and Sarah on the other.

Eleanor froze.

Leo’s stained white shirt drew several gasps.

Julian stopped at the foot of the stage.

“You locked my son in a document vault.”

Eleanor recovered quickly.

“I placed him in a safe room after Sarah trespassed.”

“He was inside before Sarah entered the building.”

“He became agitated.”

“I found the hidden camera,” Marcus announced from behind them. “The recording is being secured.”

Eleanor looked toward the board members.

“This is exactly the instability I warned you about. Julian is allowing personal emotion to override a lawful custody arrangement.”

A gray-haired board member stood.

“Julian, is the boy injured?”

“His injury is minor. The confinement is not.”

Eleanor pointed at Sarah.

“She manipulated him into contacting her.”

“I didn’t know he had contacted her,” Julian said.

“Then you admit she arrived without invitation.”

“I invited her into my life nine years ago. You spent the last three trying to erase her from it.”

Eleanor’s face tightened.

The board secretary stepped forward.

“The removal vote has already been called. Under the bylaws, it must proceed.”

Julian looked at the screen behind Eleanor.

“Then show them the original custody order.”

Eleanor held up the displayed copy.

“There it is.”

“That is a scan.”

“It is certified.”

“Bring me the original.”

Eleanor’s confidence flickered.

Sarah saw it.

So did Leo.

He stepped forward and pointed at the crest on the screen.

“The bird is backward.”

A photographer’s flash illuminated Eleanor’s face.

The entire ballroom turned toward the enlarged seal.

The crowned falcon faced left.

Julian reached beneath his tuxedo and removed the signet ring he wore on a chain.

He pressed it against a soft napkin coated with candle soot, then lifted it.

The true Vale falcon faced right.

The board secretary stared at the screen.

Eleanor stepped down from the stage.

“Give him back,” she demanded, pointing at Leo. “I have legal custody.”

Julian moved in front of Sarah and the boy.

“Then show me the original court order.”

As security closed around Eleanor, Leo whispered the words that changed the night.

“She locked me upstairs because I found something.”

Minutes later, Marcus opened Eleanor’s handbag.

And pulled out the sealed envelope bearing the Vale family crest.
