Chapter 8 - The Night Daniel Could Not Remember

Daniel remembered the night in fragments.
Rain against the east windows.
Rebecca crying in the corridor.
His mother washing something from his hands.
Then darkness.
He had always believed it was a fever dream.
Henry sat in Daniel’s childhood bedroom and explained what Evelyn had hidden.
“You disappeared after dinner,” he said. “We found you near the river at dawn.”
“Alone?”
“Yes.”
“Was Adrian’s car already there?”
“Not yet.”
“Whose blood was on me?”
“We never learned.”
“You did not call the police?”
“Evelyn said you had been attacked.”
“By whom?”
“She said Adrian.”
Daniel stood by the window, fighting nausea.
“Why don’t I remember?”
“You had a head injury.”
Daniel touched the faint scar above his left ear.
He had been told he fell from a horse.
“Mother said this happened at the stables.”
“I know.”
“You let me believe that.”
Henry lowered his head.
“She told me the truth would destroy you.”
“What truth?”
“That you followed Adrian to the river after discovering he planned to run away with Rebecca.”
“That does not explain the blood.”
“No.”
“Did Adrian attack me?”
“I don’t know.”
“Did I attack him?”
Henry’s silence was unbearable.
Daniel left the room.
He found Clara in the garden with Oliver. They were rebuilding the cakes from Evelyn’s future birthday scene in a happier memory that had not yet occurred, shaping small pieces of mud and leaves into pretend pastries.
Oliver looked up.
“Dad?”
The word still surprised Daniel.
Oliver had begun using it after the hearing, not because Daniel asked him to, but because fear had stripped away his hesitation.
Daniel sat beside him.
“Do you remember Judge Voss at Bellweather?”
Oliver nodded.
“What did he do there?”
“He argued with Mommy.”
“About the ledger?”
“Yes.”
“What did she say?”
Oliver pressed two leaves into the mud cake.
“She said, ‘You promised Adrian.’”
“Promised him what?”
“I don’t know.”
“Did Voss hurt her?”
“No.”
“Did he help her?”
Oliver’s face tightened.
“He left.”
“Before she disappeared?”
“Yes.”
“Was anyone else there?”
“The man with the silver ring.”
Daniel thought of Graham Pike.
Pike wore a gold wedding band, not silver.
“What did he look like?”
“He had a scar here.”
Oliver touched his chin.
“And he called Mommy Becca.”
Only a few people had called Rebecca that.
Daniel.
Adrian.
And their childhood friend, Michael Crane.
Michael had been the son of the estate groundskeeper. He disappeared from Westbridge at eighteen after being accused of stealing from Evelyn.
Daniel called an investigator he trusted in London.
Within an hour, he learned that Michael Crane had changed his name.
He now worked as director of security for Bellweather Medical Properties.
The windowless building.
Daniel drove there before sunset.
Clara wanted him to wait for police support, but the local department delayed every request connected to the Harrow family.
Ruth remained in custody.
The substitute judge would rule on Oliver the next morning.
Daniel had no time.
Bellweather North stood behind a line of dead trees, surrounded by fencing and security cameras. The public gate was chained.
Daniel followed Margaret’s recording and searched the eastern boundary.
He found the service tunnel beneath a collapsed maintenance shed.
Inside, the air smelled of damp concrete.
His phone light revealed old pipes, broken medical carts, and scratch marks along the walls.
The tunnel opened into a basement corridor.
The building was not abandoned.
Electric lights glowed behind several doors.
Daniel heard voices.
He moved toward them and found a surveillance room containing monitors from throughout the facility.
One screen showed empty patient rooms.
Another showed the exterior gates.
The final monitor showed a woman sitting at a metal table.
Rebecca.
Her hair was shorter and streaked with gray. Her face looked thin, but Daniel recognized her immediately.
She was alive.
He reached for the control panel.
A voice behind him said, “You always did enter rooms without thinking.”
Daniel turned.
A man stood in the doorway.
Tall.
Dark-haired.
A narrow scar crossed his chin.
Michael Crane.
He wore a silver ring.
“Where is my sister?”
Michael looked toward the monitor.
“Closer than she has been in twenty years.”
“Open the door.”
“I can’t.”
“You are the security director.”
“That doesn’t mean I control this place.”
“Who does?”
Michael glanced toward the ceiling camera.
“Your mother.”
Daniel stepped toward him.
“Oliver saw you take Rebecca.”
“I took her out of the basement before Pike’s men found her.”
“Where is she now?”
“Not in that room.”
Daniel looked at the monitor.
“It is a recording?”
“From three days ago.”
“Why?”
“To make anyone searching believe she is still here.”
“Where did you take her?”
Michael’s jaw tightened.
“She did not want you involved.”
“She left her son for me.”
“She ran out of choices.”
Daniel grabbed his jacket.
“Tell me where she is.”
Michael did not resist.
Instead, he said, “You still do not remember the river.”
Daniel released him.
“What happened?”
“You tried to stop Adrian from leaving.”
“Did I hurt him?”
“No.”
“Then whose blood was on me?”
Michael’s eyes filled with something like pity.
“Rebecca’s.”
Daniel stepped back.
Michael continued.
“She followed you both to the river. Pike arrived with two men. He was working for Evelyn even then. Rebecca tried to stop them from taking Adrian.”
“What did they do?”
“They hit her. You fought them. One struck you with a tire iron.”
“And Adrian?”
“Taken alive.”
“Why did Mother tell Henry I attacked him?”
“To make you doubt yourself if your memory returned.”
Daniel looked at the screen showing Rebecca.
“Where is she?”
Michael removed a key card.
“At a safe house outside the city.”
“Take me there.”
“I cannot until we recover the ledger.”
“Why?”
“Because Rebecca believes someone inside your family will kill Oliver once the custody order is issued.”
Daniel thought of Evelyn.
“Then I will take him away.”
“She has frozen your accounts, challenged your passport, and filed a criminal complaint over the deed.”
Daniel’s phone vibrated.
Clara was calling.
He answered.
Her voice shook.
“Daniel, come back.”
“What happened?”
“The court issued the order early.”
His chest tightened.
“Where is Oliver?”
“I locked us in Margaret’s study.”
Voices shouted behind Clara.
A door slammed.
May you like
Then Oliver screamed.
The call ended.
