Chapter 5 - The Woman in the Green Coat

Daniel searched every room on the second floor.

Clara called the police.

Henry shouted for the household staff.

Evelyn remained in the drawing room, claiming she knew nothing.

Daniel did not believe her.

Oliver’s pendant lay beneath the open service stairwell, but there were no signs of a struggle. A small muddy footprint marked the first step, followed by another.

“He walked down here,” Clara said.

“Or someone made him.”

The service stairs led to the kitchen corridor.

A rear door stood open.

Beyond it, a path crossed the garden toward the old greenhouse.

Daniel ran outside.

The greenhouse had been abandoned since Margaret’s death. Ivy covered the glass, and several panes were broken.

Inside, he found Oliver sitting on an overturned flowerpot.

The woman in the green coat stood several feet away.

Ruth Keller.

Daniel stopped at the doorway.

“Move away from him.”

Ruth raised both hands.

“I did not take him.”

Oliver looked at Daniel.

“She told me my mother is alive.”

Daniel entered slowly.

“Where?”

Ruth looked toward the estate.

“Not here.”

Clara arrived behind him, breathless.

Daniel positioned himself between Ruth and Oliver.

“You tried to take him from the station.”

“I tried to get him away before Evelyn saw him.”

“You said you were his aunt.”

“I needed the police to release him.”

“You lied.”

“Yes.”

“Why should I believe you now?”

“Because Rebecca sent me.”

Ruth removed a small envelope from her coat.

Daniel did not take it.

“Where is she?”

“In danger.”

“That is not an answer.”

“It is the only safe one.”

Oliver stood.

“You said she was coming.”

Ruth’s face softened.

“I said she would try.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“What happened at Bellweather?”

Ruth glanced at Henry, who had reached the greenhouse with one of the servants.

“You should ask him.”

“I already did.”

“Then ask him who signed Rebecca’s second commitment order.”

Henry stared at her.

Ruth smiled bitterly.

“You remember me now?”

Henry’s lips parted.

“Dr. Keller.”

“I stopped using that title after your wife destroyed my career.”

Daniel looked between them.

“You worked at Bellweather?”

“I was a psychiatric resident there. I believed it was a treatment center.”

“And Rebecca?”

“She was admitted under the name Anna Vale.”

Oliver’s surname.

Ruth continued.

“She was drugged, isolated, and declared legally incompetent. Evelyn used the order to discredit anything Rebecca said about Harrow Medical.”

“How did she escape?”

“With Margaret’s help.”

Daniel frowned.

“Margaret died before Rebecca disappeared.”

“No. Margaret’s official death occurred before Rebecca disappeared.”

Silence filled the greenhouse.

Ruth reached into her coat again and produced a photograph.

It showed Margaret Harrow lying in a hospital bed.

A newspaper beside her displayed a date six months after her reported funeral.

Daniel stared at it.

“What is this?”

“Your grandmother was declared dead after a private aircraft accident. There was no public body. In reality, she survived and was placed at Bellweather under another name.”

Henry gripped the greenhouse table.

“No.”

Ruth looked at him.

“You signed those documents too.”

“I signed transfer forms. Evelyn told me Margaret needed private care.”

“You signed away her identity.”

Henry’s face went gray.

Daniel felt sick.

“How long did Margaret live?”

“Two years.”

“Did Rebecca find her?”

“Yes. That is how they escaped.”

Oliver walked to Ruth.

“Where did you take them?”

Ruth looked down at him.

“To a farmhouse near the coast. Margaret died there. Rebecca survived.”

“Then why didn’t she contact me?” Daniel asked.

“Because Evelyn had people watching you.”

“I left the country.”

“She followed your accounts, your addresses, your friends. Rebecca believed contacting you would lead Evelyn to Oliver.”

Daniel thought about the years he had spent believing his sister abandoned him.

All that time, she might have been protecting him.

Clara asked, “Why did Rebecca return to Westbridge?”

“To retrieve the final ledger and the original property deed.”

“Did she find them?”

“Not both.”

Ruth nodded toward the house.

“The deed is somewhere inside the estate. The ledger was hidden at Bellweather North.”

Daniel looked at Evelyn through the distant drawing-room window.

“Why leave Oliver at the station?”

Ruth’s expression changed.

“Because Rebecca was captured.”

Oliver made a small sound.

Daniel crouched beside him.

Ruth continued carefully.

“We went to Bellweather two weeks ago. Rebecca entered through the service tunnel. She told me to take Oliver if she did not return within an hour.”

“And you left him alone?”

“I was followed. I thought I could draw them away and return.”

“You could have called the police.”

“The police chief sits on the Harrow Foundation board.”

Daniel hated that the explanation made sense.

“Who captured her?”

“I do not know. Bellweather is officially closed, but someone is operating inside it.”

Evelyn’s voice came from the greenhouse entrance.

“You always were dramatic, Ruth.”

Everyone turned.

Evelyn stood beside two men in dark suits.

Daniel recognized one as Graham Pike, the Harrow family attorney.

The other was the man whose voice had appeared on the secret recording years later in the backyard, though Daniel did not know that yet.

Ruth’s face hardened.

“You should be in prison.”

Evelyn smiled.

“You should be in a psychiatric hospital.”

She looked at Oliver.

“And that is exactly where he will go if Daniel continues listening to you.”

Daniel moved closer to Oliver.

“You have no authority over him.”

Graham Pike opened a folder.

“Actually, Mrs. Harrow filed an emergency petition this morning. She is requesting protective custody based on concerns that the child has been coached by unstable adults.”

Clara stared.

“She claimed she did not know him.”

“She has since received information about his background.”

Ruth laughed.

“You mean she has manufactured information.”

Pike’s expression remained neutral.

“A judge will decide.”

Daniel looked at his mother.

“You arranged this before I opened Margaret’s study.”

“I anticipated your irresponsibility.”

“You want Oliver removed because he knows Rebecca is alive.”

“I want him removed because he is dangerous.”

“He is a child.”

“He is evidence.”

Evelyn realized what she had said.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Evidence of what?”

Her gaze flicked toward Ruth.

Ruth answered for her.

“Evidence that Rebecca’s marriage was legal.”

Daniel looked at her.

“What marriage?”

Ruth took Oliver’s hand and pulled the silver chain from beneath his collar.

The pendant was not merely jewelry.

Its front opened to reveal a small engraved crest.

Henry recognized it.

“That belongs to Adrian Vale.”

Daniel turned.

“Who is Adrian Vale?”

May you like

No one answered immediately.

Then Henry whispered, “The man who should have inherited Harrow Industries.”
