Chapter 7 - The Judge Who Owed Evelyn Everything

Judge Samuel Voss presided over Oliver’s emergency custody hearing.

The surname caught Daniel’s attention.

Adam Voss had been the false name used for Adrian Vale at Bellweather.

Daniel did not believe in coincidences anymore.

The hearing took place in a private courtroom closed to the public. Evelyn sat beside Graham Pike. Daniel sat with Clara, Marina, and a court-appointed attorney whose nervous habit of tapping his pen made Daniel want to tear it from his hand.

Oliver waited in another room with a child advocate.

Ruth had been detained overnight for violating a restraining order she claimed never to have seen.

Judge Voss entered without looking toward Daniel.

Pike began by describing Oliver as a traumatized child manipulated by adults involved in a long-standing campaign against the Harrow family.

He presented Rebecca as mentally unstable.

He presented Ruth as a disgraced doctor.

He presented Daniel as estranged, resentful, and financially motivated.

Then he showed photographs of the hidden room, the opened study, and the estate deed.

“Mr. Harrow entered the family residence and removed disputed property,” Pike said.

“It is my father’s residence,” Daniel replied.

Judge Voss looked at him.

“You will speak through counsel.”

Daniel’s attorney touched his sleeve.

Pike continued.

“Mrs. Evelyn Harrow is requesting temporary guardianship so the child may receive appropriate psychiatric evaluation.”

Daniel felt Clara tense.

“At Bellweather?” she whispered.

Pike heard.

“At an independent facility.”

Daniel stood.

“No.”

The judge struck his gavel.

“Sit down.”

“You are not sending him to any facility connected to my family.”

“Mr. Harrow—”

“My sister was imprisoned under a false name.”

Pike sighed as if Daniel had proven his argument.

Judge Voss looked at the attorney.

“Control your client.”

Daniel sat because Clara gripped his wrist.

Marina testified next.

She stated that Oliver showed signs of trauma but had developed a strong attachment to Daniel and Clara. She recommended that he remain with them while the investigation continued.

Pike questioned her.

“Did Mr. Harrow inform you that he had no prior relationship with the child?”

“Yes.”

“Did he inform you that he believed the child’s mother might be his missing sister?”

“Yes.”

“Would such a belief influence his emotional judgment?”

“It could.”

“Would you agree that removing a child from a conflict-filled estate may be appropriate?”

“Removing him to a neutral foster home, perhaps. Not to a facility chosen by Mrs. Harrow.”

Pike smiled.

“Why not?”

“Because Mrs. Harrow denied knowing Oliver, then filed for guardianship within forty-eight hours.”

The judge’s expression darkened.

Pike quickly changed direction.

When Oliver entered, the room became still.

He sat beside the child advocate, his feet unable to reach the floor.

Judge Voss softened his voice.

“Oliver, do you know why you are here?”

“Because Evelyn wants to take me away.”

The judge glanced at Pike.

“Who told you that?”

“No one.”

“Do you know Mrs. Harrow?”

Oliver nodded.

“How?”

“She came to our apartment.”

“When?”

“Before the station.”

“What did she say?”

Oliver’s hands curled together.

“She told Mommy to give her the black book.”

Pike rose.

“Your Honor, this is clearly coached testimony.”

Judge Voss did not stop him.

Daniel’s attorney finally spoke.

“The child has not completed his answer.”

Judge Voss looked at Oliver.

“What black book?”

“The one Daddy made.”

Daniel leaned forward.

Adrian’s ledger.

“Where is it now?” the judge asked.

Oliver looked around the courtroom.

Then he pointed.

“At his house.”

Everyone followed his finger.

He was pointing at Judge Voss.

The judge’s face went completely still.

Pike dropped his pen.

Daniel stood.

“What does he mean?”

The judge struck the gavel.

“This hearing is adjourned.”

Oliver became frightened.

The child advocate reached for him, but Daniel moved faster.

He crossed the room and placed himself beside the boy.

Judge Voss rose.

Pike hurried toward the bench.

Daniel saw them exchange a look.

Not confusion.

Panic.

“Oliver,” Daniel said softly, “why do you think the book is at his house?”

Oliver pointed toward the judge again.

“He was at the white building.”

The courtroom doors opened.

Two deputies entered.

Judge Voss’s voice sharpened.

“Remove Mr. Harrow.”

Daniel lifted Oliver into his arms.

“You visited Bellweather?”

Voss did not answer.

Oliver clung to Daniel.

“You came into Mommy’s room,” he said. “She called you Uncle Samuel.”

The judge looked as though he had been struck.

Henry, who had attended despite Evelyn’s objections, rose from the back bench.

“Samuel?”

Judge Voss turned toward him.

Henry whispered, “Adam Voss was your brother’s identity.”

Daniel looked between them.

“You knew Adrian?”

Voss removed his glasses.

For one moment, he seemed twenty years older.

Then he spoke in a low voice.

“Adrian Vale was my half brother.”

The room erupted.

Pike demanded that the record be sealed.

Daniel’s attorney objected.

Evelyn remained seated.

She did not look surprised.

Judge Voss left through a side door.

Ten minutes later, the clerk announced that the custody decision had been postponed.

Oliver would remain with Daniel for twenty-four hours.

After that, a substitute judge would rule.

Outside the courtroom, Evelyn approached Daniel.

“You should stop before you lose him.”

Daniel held Oliver closer.

“You knew Voss was connected to Adrian.”

“I know many people.”

“Did he help you imprison Rebecca?”

Evelyn’s eyes shifted toward Oliver.

“You keep asking the wrong question.”

“What is the right one?”

“Why did Rebecca trust the brother of the man she believed you murdered?”

Daniel stared at her.

“I was fifteen when Adrian disappeared.”

“Yes.”

“You’re lying.”

“Am I?”

She leaned closer.

“Ask Henry why you were sent away to school the morning Adrian’s car was found.”

Then she walked toward the courthouse steps.

Daniel turned to his father.

Henry’s face confirmed that another secret had opened.

“What happened that night?” Daniel asked.

Henry whispered, “You came home covered in blood.”
