Chapter 14 - The Father Behind the Glass

They reached Blackthorn Island before dawn.

Michael secured a fishing boat through one of Ruth’s former Bellweather contacts. Daniel, Jonathan, Lily, and two state investigators crossed through rough water beneath a moonless sky.

Clara remained on the mainland.

She made Daniel promise to bring Oliver home.

Daniel did not promise anything else.

The faceless saint stood on the western cliff.

Lily found the entrance beneath its broken stone base.

The passage descended into the island.

Inside, electric cables ran beside walls carved centuries earlier. Security cameras moved soundlessly above the corridor.

Michael disabled the first system.

The second remained active.

“They know we’re here,” he said.

“Good,” Daniel replied.

The underground facility contained patient rooms, archives, and a chapel converted into a control center.

But it seemed empty.

Too empty.

They found Evelyn alone in the chapel.

She stood before a wall of extinguished candles.

Daniel aimed Pike’s recovered gun at her.

“Where is Oliver?”

Evelyn turned.

“You brought Lily.”

The girl moved behind Jonathan.

“You are not taking her again,” Daniel said.

“I did not take her the first time.”

“Pike did it for you.”

“Pike did it for Adrian.”

Daniel’s grip tightened.

“Is he alive?”

Evelyn looked toward the altar.

A glass wall brightened behind it.

On the other side stood a man.

Dark hair streaked with silver.

A scar beneath his jaw.

Adrian Vale.

Oliver stood beside him.

Untied.

Uninjured.

Daniel lowered the weapon slightly.

Oliver saw him.

“Dad!”

He ran toward the glass, but the wall did not open.

Daniel approached.

“Oliver, are you hurt?”

“No.”

“Step away from him.”

Adrian smiled faintly.

“He has your stubbornness.”

Daniel looked at the man he had believed dead.

“You ordered the crash.”

“No.”

“Your people took him.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To keep Evelyn from killing him.”

Evelyn laughed.

“Listen to him rewriting history.”

Adrian’s eyes moved toward her.

“You should not be alive.”

“You tried before.”

“You imprisoned Rebecca.”

“You used Rebecca.”

Oliver looked between them.

“Where is my mom?”

Adrian’s face changed.

“She is coming.”

Daniel struck the glass with his palm.

“Open this door.”

Adrian pressed a control.

A hidden section slid aside.

Oliver ran through.

Daniel caught him and lifted him into his arms.

The boy clung tightly.

“I told them you’d come.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Then he set Oliver behind him and faced Adrian.

“Rebecca?”

“Alive.”

“Where?”

“On her way to the mainland.”

“Why not here?”

“Because Jonathan cannot be trusted.”

Jonathan raised his gun.

Adrian did the same.

Lily cried out.

Both men froze.

She stepped between them.

“Are you my father?”

Adrian looked at her.

For the first time, all hardness left his face.

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you find me?”

He lowered his weapon.

“I tried.”

“For eight years?”

“Every day.”

“Did you know where I was?”

Adrian glanced at Evelyn.

“Not until recently.”

Evelyn shook her head.

“He knew.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“She is lying.”

“She always lies,” Oliver said.

Daniel looked at Adrian.

“Then prove something.”

Adrian opened the control-room archive.

A video began playing on the glass wall.

It showed Evelyn speaking to Graham Pike ten years earlier.

“The girl remains with Celeste,” Evelyn said. “Adrian must believe she died.”

Pike asked, “And the boy?”

“Rebecca escaped with him.”

“Should we search?”

“No. Let Adrian search. Every contact he makes will lead us closer to the ledger.”

The video ended.

Lily stared at Evelyn.

“You knew where I was.”

Evelyn did not deny it.

Adrian walked through the glass doorway.

Jonathan aimed at him.

“Stop.”

Adrian looked at his father.

“You left me in Bellweather.”

“I tried to negotiate your release.”

“You gave them the ledger.”

“I thought they would honor the agreement.”

“You always thought your intentions mattered more than the consequences.”

Jonathan’s hand shook.

“I am sorry.”

Adrian laughed once.

“Twenty years late.”

Daniel moved between them.

“This ends now.”

“No,” Adrian said. “It begins now.”

He opened another file.

A list of hundreds of names appeared.

“Evelyn was never the leader. Neither was Pike. The Bellweather network is controlled by trustees, judges, doctors, and families across the country.”

Daniel thought of the children whose identities had been altered.

“You have the evidence.”

“I have part of it.”

“Release it.”

“If I do, they will kill every surviving witness.”

“So you built your own prison on this island?”

“I built protection.”

Evelyn said, “He built an army.”

Daniel looked at the security feeds.

Rooms he had assumed were empty began filling with people.

Adults.

Some elderly.

Some middle-aged.

Several with children.

Bellweather survivors.

Adrian continued.

“They have waited years for someone to expose the network without exposing them.”

“Rebecca wanted the evidence public.”

“Rebecca wanted justice. There is a difference.”

A warning alarm sounded.

Michael looked at the security panel.

“Boats approaching from the east.”

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“How many?”

“Six.”

Evelyn smiled.

“They found you.”

“Who?” Daniel asked.

She looked toward the camera feeds.

“The family.”

Armed men entered the island tunnels.

State investigators called for backup, but the signal vanished.

Adrian ordered the survivors into lower shelters.

Jonathan took Lily.

Daniel held Oliver’s hand.

Gunfire echoed through the corridor.

A door opened behind the altar.

Adrian pointed toward it.

“This tunnel reaches the northern cliffs.”

Daniel pushed Oliver toward Jonathan.

“Take the children.”

Oliver resisted.

“I’m not leaving you.”

“I will follow.”

“You said that before.”

Daniel knelt.

“And I came.”

Oliver hugged him.

Then Jonathan led both children into the passage.

Adrian handed Daniel a weapon.

“Still think I am the enemy?”

“I think you brought my son to an island without telling me.”

“I needed the key.”

“You used him.”

Adrian did not deny it.

Daniel raised the gun.

“After we survive this, you and I are going to have a different conversation.”

Adrian smiled without humor.

“That sounds like the Daniel I remember.”

The attackers breached the chapel.

Michael cut the lights.

In the darkness, Daniel heard Evelyn moving.

A door closed.

When emergency lights returned, she was gone.

So was the archive drive.

Adrian stared at the empty console.

“She took everything.”

Daniel looked toward the tunnel.

A scream echoed from the northern passage.

Lily’s scream.

They ran.

At the cliff exit, Jonathan lay unconscious beside the stone wall.

Lily was gone.

Oliver stood at the edge of the path, crying.

A helicopter rose from the far side of the island.

Evelyn sat inside.

Beside her was Lily.

And holding the archive drive was the man with the silver signet ring.

His face turned toward the window.

May you like

Daniel saw him clearly.

The man looked almost exactly like Henry.
