Chapter 15 - The Brother Who Came Home

The helicopter disappeared into the dawn.

Adrian raised his weapon, but it was already beyond range.

Oliver shouted Lily’s name until his voice broke.

Daniel pulled him back from the cliff.

Jonathan regained consciousness moments later.

He touched the wound on his temple and looked toward the empty sky.

“Who took her?”

Daniel turned to Adrian.

“You both know him.”

Adrian’s face had gone pale.

“I thought he was dead.”

“Everyone in this family is thought dead until they become useful.”

Jonathan struggled to stand.

“What did he look like?”

Daniel described him.

The silver hair.

Henry’s face.

The signet ring.

Jonathan closed his eyes.

“Edmund.”

Daniel stared.

“Another brother?”

“Our oldest brother,” Jonathan said. “Evelyn’s first husband.”

Daniel thought he had misheard.

“My mother was married before Henry?”

“Yes.”

“Does my father know?”

“He knew Edmund existed. He did not know the marriage was legal.”

Adrian looked toward the mainland.

“Edmund founded the trust network that controlled Bellweather.”

Daniel’s mind raced.

“Then Evelyn was working for him.”

“At first,” Jonathan said. “Later, she tried to take control.”

“Why would he take Lily?”

Adrian answered.

“Because the twins are not merely heirs to Vale shares.”

“What else?”

Jonathan and Adrian exchanged a look.

Daniel’s anger rose.

“No more secrets.”

Adrian removed a waterproof case from beneath his coat.

Inside lay a document marked with the Harrow crest.

“The company you know as Harrow Industries is a small part of a much older trust,” he said. “Margaret discovered it before she was imprisoned.”

“What trust?”

“The Ashbourne Covenant.”

Daniel had never heard the name.

Adrian continued.

“It controls private hospitals, shipping companies, political foundations, and assets hidden across six countries.”

“And Oliver and Lily inherit it?”

“Not automatically.”

“Then why are they important?”

“Because the covenant requires two descendants from opposing family lines to open its central records.”

Daniel looked at the twins’ pendants.

“The keys.”

“Yes.”

Oliver wiped his face.

“Is Lily going to die?”

Daniel immediately knelt.

“No.”

“You don’t know.”

“No,” Daniel admitted. “But Evelyn and Edmund need her alive.”

“For how long?”

Daniel could not answer.

Michael reached them through the tunnel.

“The attackers are withdrawing. They took three survivors and destroyed the communications room.”

“Can we track the helicopter?” Daniel asked.

“Not from here.”

Adrian looked at Oliver.

“Edmund will contact us.”

“How do you know?”

“He still needs the second key.”

Oliver held his pendant tightly.

Daniel stood.

“Then we make sure he never gets it.”

Adrian’s expression became unreadable.

“That may not be possible.”

“Why?”

“Because the key is not only inside the pendant.”

Daniel looked at Oliver.

Adrian touched his own chest.

“The twins carry biometric markers created through an illegal Bellweather program. Their blood can unlock the archive.”

Daniel felt a wave of horror.

“You experimented on newborn children?”

“I did not.”

“But you knew.”

“Not until later.”

“Everyone knew later. No one stopped it.”

Adrian accepted the accusation.

Jonathan looked toward the sea.

“We need to return to the mainland before Edmund closes every route.”

The island survivors began emerging from the shelters.

Some recognized Oliver.

A woman approached and knelt in front of him.

“You have Rebecca’s eyes,” she said.

Oliver asked, “Do you know my mom?”

The woman smiled sadly.

“She saved my daughter.”

“Where is she?”

“Rebecca?”

Oliver nodded.

The woman looked at Adrian.

Her smile disappeared.

“She came to the island three days ago.”

Daniel turned sharply.

“Adrian said she was on her way to the mainland.”

The woman shook her head.

“No. Rebecca never left.”

Adrian raised his hands.

“That is not true.”

“She entered the lower archive with you.”

Adrian’s expression tightened.

Daniel stepped toward him.

“What did you do?”

“Nothing.”

“Where is my sister?”

“I told you, she left.”

The woman reached into her coat and removed a small recorder.

“Rebecca gave me this in case she did not come back.”

Daniel pressed play.

Rebecca’s voice emerged.

“Daniel, if you hear this, Adrian has lied to you.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

The recording continued.

“He believes the only way to destroy the covenant is to open its central archive. He needs both children. He will tell you he is protecting them.”

Oliver stepped closer to Daniel.

Rebecca took a shaky breath.

“Do not let him take Oliver to the mainland. The man controlling Evelyn is waiting there.”

Daniel aimed his weapon at Adrian.

“Where is Rebecca?”

Adrian did not move.

“Daniel, listen to me.”

“Where is she?”

“The lower archive.”

“Alive?”

“Yes.”

“Why did you say she left?”

“Because she discovered something that changed the plan.”

“What?”

Adrian looked at Oliver.

“The covenant records prove Oliver and Lily are not the only twins.”

Silence fell across the cliff.

Daniel lowered the weapon slightly.

“What does that mean?”

“Rebecca found another birth file.”

“Whose?”

“Yours.”

Daniel stared at him.

Adrian spoke carefully.

“You were born at Bellweather.”

“No.”

“Henry and Evelyn were not the only names on your birth certificate.”

Daniel felt the ground shift beneath him.

“Who else?”

Adrian looked toward Jonathan.

Jonathan’s face had gone white.

The recorder in Daniel’s hand crackled.

Rebecca’s voice returned.

“Daniel, the family lied about the night you were born. You had a twin brother.”

Daniel could not breathe.

Oliver reached for his hand.

On the horizon, a second helicopter appeared.

Unlike the first, it flew directly toward the island.

A symbol had been painted on its side.

Three birds inside a circle.

Margaret’s mark.

The aircraft descended toward the cliff.

The door opened before it landed.

A woman stood inside.

Her hair was streaked with gray, and a scar crossed one side of her face.

Rebecca.

Oliver screamed, “Mommy!”

He ran forward.

Daniel caught his arm before he reached the landing area.

Rebecca stepped onto the cliff.

Her eyes found Oliver first.

Then Daniel.

Tears filled them.

But she did not move closer.

“Daniel,” she called over the sound of the blades, “you have to come with me now.”

“Where is Lily?”

“Edmund has her.”

“Who is my twin?”

Rebecca looked behind Daniel.

At Adrian.

At Jonathan.

At the survivors gathered near the tunnel.

Then back at her brother.

“The man Evelyn sent to crash Oliver’s transport.”

Daniel remembered the driver.

The face hidden behind dark glasses.

The fingerprints that did not exist.

Rebecca raised a photograph.

It showed two newborn boys lying beside each other.

One wore a bracelet marked Daniel.

The other wore a bracelet marked Elias.

“Your brother has been working for Edmund his entire life,” Rebecca said.

A gunshot echoed from inside the survivors’ crowd.

Michael fell to one knee.

People screamed and scattered.

A man in a bloodstained security uniform stepped forward.

He removed his dark glasses.

Daniel stared at his own face.

Older in some places.

Harder in others.

But unmistakably the same.

The man raised a gun toward Oliver.

Rebecca shouted, “Elias, don’t!”

Daniel pushed Oliver behind him.

The twin brother smiled.

“I’m not here for the child.”

His gun shifted toward Rebecca.

“I’m here to make sure she never tells you which one of us is the real Daniel Harrow.”

May you like

The shot rang out.

And before Daniel could see who had fallen, the cliff disappeared beneath smoke.
